17 Parenting Hacks For a More Enjoyable Life

At a family supper out the other night, there was a fleeting moment when all 3 of our kids were actually sitting and eating and not shouting or arguing with each other.  The table next door had a toddler who was kicking off and a baby that wouldn’t go to sleep. They had so much paraphilia and it bought that stage all back and made me relieved we were ‘through’ that stage of life.

taupe-silk-fv

Fast forward to the next night and our kids were doing exactly opposite to what they were doing the night before – shouting, getting down and not eating anything.

The table next to us had older kids and they looked pretty sorted. I was heading down the ‘I can’t wait till they get to that age’ route until the mother whispered to me ‘with each stage there are different problems (in her instance back chat, friend problems, school pressure etc) so enjoy each stage, as it goes so quickly.’

She is so right! It made me think about all the other snippets of wisdom I have heard either from advice or through osmosis and thought I would share them with you. Take what you want, leave what you disagree with but I hope something will stick.

earrings

Don’t wish away the years. When they get to this age/out of this stage it will be easier. Each stage brings its own joy and struggle. Try to be content in each period of life.

Don’t judge what’s going on the inside by the outside. That first night when my kids were ‘good’ is not the norm at a family dinner, you just saw a snippet. You have no idea what it is really like, so don’t judge or presume.

Be a united front with your partner as much as humanly possible, even if you don’t agree with them at the time. Kids will play up if they get a sniff that one of their parents might even slightly on their side.

If kids are happy don’t move them. It’s all very well needing to be somewhere at a certain time but we all know as soon as there is a time pressure – kids kick off as they sense the stress.

Surround yourself with flexible people who don’t take offence. Now when someone cancels, I really don’t mind as I so understand everyone is busy and under pressure. However, I try now to live by…

Let your yes be yes and your no be no. I have learnt to wait a bit before replying to events and invitations so I can get an overview on my diary so I don’t over book ourselves.

Keep it simple. Don’t rush around pillar to post (note to self) only accept one invitation a weekend (in my view) especially as they get older and you have clubs and homework and the odd kids party, you need some simple family time not another event to head to!

Plan your day/routine and don’t be swayed or pressured by anyone else. Everyone wants to be part of where the fun is, but if you have planned on tea at a certain time, stick to it and join later.

Be consistent. Kids do love predictability and knowing what’s coming next. If you like a bit of adventure and want them to come, explain what you are doing before you do it.

Communicate. If we are going out for supper or to a friend’s house or a church service, we explain what we expect of them – polite, quiet etc and find that if you speak to them before, they usually get it and step up to the plate.

Respect different parenting styles. There is not one single family with exactly the same parenting mindset as you. There will be a few who are similar but ultimately just do what works for you and stick to it.

Learn the art of distraction as soon as you have a baby! I wish I knew this a few years ago. Distraction is the BEST way to curb a tantrum/tears/wobbly before it begins (applies to adults too!)

  • At the airport – shall we watch the planes take off.
  • In the park – shall we find a dog to plat with?
  • At a restaurant – which famous person would you like to see walk through the door?
  • And so on.

Don’t compare. Children develop at different rates and in different ways. Whilst little Timmy might be out of nappies at 2, he still hasn’t said his first work or Tilly can write her name in cursive at 4 but still has a bottle at night. Don’t worry, they all catch up on the main things and your child WILL be exceptional at something so don’t worry (even if you still haven’t discovered it yet)

Avoid mood hovers. Competitive parents can really be a pain, so just smile when they are showing off and trust your instinct that you are making the right decisions for your family.

Get some sleep. It’s one thing your kids being tired but if you are too, it’s game over. If they wake you in the night, go to bed earlier so you have had some good hours already.

Tag team. When my first was a baby, in our excitement we did everything together but now we have three it is much better to be properly ‘off duty’ for an hour then to resent having so much to do and not being able to do

Divide and conquer. No people won’t think you are having marital problems if they don’t see you together all the time. It is much easier splitting off with one or two children for a short time at the weekend

Plan some one on one time. My kids are so happy on their own with one parent (two parents together is the dream but not ever possible!) they have undivided attention which is ultimately what they want to feel loved and valued.

Top 20 Picks for the Change in Weather at Marks & Spencer

So it would be predictable to rabbit on about the weather at the moment and we know as soon we do wax lyrical about summer finally being here – it is gone in an instant. BUT, imagine it was here for a while and our improvised summer wardrobes actually needed a bit of investing in? Well, I have weeded through the whole of Marks & Spencer, in store and online, to bring you my top picks from their new Summer Collection.

Hold it now – there are some real gems! Hope this helps xx

Havana Pom Pom Hat £17.50

I love the mix of Azteca and pom pom – good one M and S!

sd_01_t01_4967f_v4_x_ec_0

Woven Hoop Earrings £12.50

I am a proud owner of these earrings! I bought them as I haven’t seen anything like this before on the high street and they are the right mix of boho and smart.

sd_01_t06_2285c_gv_x_ec_90

Cats Eye Glasses £15

I am a massive tortoiseshell fan so these are right up my strata.  The pink lenses give them a bit of 2017 in case they remind you of your mother in the 80’s!

glasses

Lace Bralet £12

I love this and want one in all 4 colours. This is the PERFECT way to overcome those tricky skimpy summer top situations, as this showing under a slouchy off the shoulder top would look mega.

sd_02_t81_8087b_a0_x_ec_0

Spotted Collarless Jacket £29.50

This lightweight cropped jacket is great to throw on to smarten you up, without over heating.

collarless jacket

Tiered Long Sleeve Midi Dress £49.50

Ok, so against all advice on my own colouring – I have actually bought this as I think I can pull it off with nude sandals and some red lips (and of course a bit of a tan!) Will put a photo on Instagram next week so you can judge for yourself!

tiered yellow dress

Embroidered Long Sleeve Tunic Dress £45

Whether a boho fan or not (I always have been, I have just locked it away for the last 10 years and am delighted of its resurgence) this pretty number will disguise the mum tum after a rose and calamari lunch!

ivory embroidered dress

Orange Shirt Dress £59.50

If I worked in an office, had dark colouring and warm skin – I would buy this! If you fit all three of these requirements – this would be a stunning investment.

orange dress

Triangle Slide Swimsuit with Performed Cup £45

Ok, ignoring that Rosie wood look good in my old mustard cord dungarees from when I was 10, lets break this costume down. I don’t know what ‘performed’ means, but it can only be good. The adjustable slides will protect your modesty if you don’t want to go too low, the back is nice and scooped and the dark navy colour is slimming. Tick.

sd_02_t52_8322_xb_x_ec_0

Poplin Ruffle Sleeveless Blouse £25

Also comes in navy.

Just so useful on it’s own or under a cardigan. Wear solo if you have Pippa Middleton’s arms! If not, see below!

Short Sleeve Bardot Blouse £27.50

Hey presto. The bingo wing saviour.

sd_01_t43_8460_ky_x_ec_0

Colour Block Woven Bracelets £15

Again, thread and metal gets my vote every time and these are gorgeous beach colours.

woven bracelets

Coin Detail Mini Skirt £45

Forgive me if this more look it is for a ‘Christmas Edit’ but if you have the legs, whack on some flats as this would make a gorgeous glamorous summer evening look.

coin mini

Cotton Rich Dipped Hem A Line Skirt £45

I like the slightly wide band waistband and think this shows enough leg without looking frumpy but also covers up the back of the knees. Sold!

sd_01_t59_4079t_f0_x_ec_0

Floral Print Slim Leg Trousers £27.50

I am a big fan of crazy trousers. My mother, mother in law, sister-in-law and now daughter all have a tendency to go bright on the bottom and these would fit the bill perfectly. Lets just hope we don’t all buy the same ones!

floral trousers

Side Snap Straight Leg Trousers £35

Not strictly for updating your summer wardrobe but if you are looking for exceptionally cool relaxed loose trousers, these are for you. I love a side stripe and with the side snaps they take them onto the next level of brilliantness.

side stripe trousers

Pom Pom Sandals £35

Frodo feet? Move on. If you have had the pedicure and you are happy for people to notice you from bottom up – these are really fun.

sd_01_t02_4358_y4_x_ec_1

Wedge Heels £39.50

Annoyingly these were out of my size in the bricks and mortar size but they have plenty online, also in navy. You can’t go wrong with these nondescript wedges.

sd_01_t02_2953_t0_x_ec_0

Leather Animal Print Red Tassel Mules £35

These have become distinctly Marks and Spencer’s trade mark summer shoes since the big fashion guns on Instagram started shouting about them. The combination of animal skin and tassels does make them a summer favourite.

Hand Embellished Beach Bag £39.50

This bag is lovely and large and super versatile. I love the gold stitching!

I really hope this was useful. Please let me know if there is anything you are looking for or wanting advice. I have my nose in a lot of shops/websites so might just be able to help.

TLM Monthly Edit

TLM Monthly Edit : May 2017

This month is flying by and has actually been relatively quiet on the old blogging front as my website TLM Edit has been taking up a lot of time as you guys have been amazingly supportive and making quite a few purchases. I am on average making two trips to the post office a day which in some minds eye is a huge burden, but when my Shopify app peeps with a new transaction, I can’t really complain!

Tassel Bracelet

So what has caught my eye this month….

Aromatherapy Massage with Jenny James

I was lucky to have one of the famous Jenny James Aromatherapy massages last week. Despite having a fantastic reputation, I didn’t pin any hopes on it being amazing as I am mega fussy about massages. But oh, I should have as she exceeded expectations.

She mixed the most gorgeous oils just for me after  a quick questionnaire and then got to work quickly and my massage. Wow, was she strong and brilliant (I dislike a feeble massage!) Excuse the cliche but I learnt about muscles I didn’t know existed and even learn a few methods for relaxing your jaw (if you are a subconscious clencher like me.) She also does pregnancy, post natal and baby massage so if you want to unwind and feel great, head to her to be assured that she will sort you out!

Simply Be

Simply Be very kindly gave me a £100 voucher to buy a few bits for the summer. I went for a Navy & White beach bag, a black swimming costume, Pom Pom sandals and a navy blue long skirt. You can check out their holiday collection here.

img_3593

Handmade Sweatshirts from Colour Attic

Rebecca makes leopard and contrast colour sweatshirts from her little cottage. I love this red one but also had my eye on the yellow as a little nod to this seasons most popular colour. She is a real craftswoman and if you are in the running for a new sweater, please head to her website (if in doubt go for the grey!)! x

My Little Koala

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Leila Raifiei makes Breastfeeding covers in lovely fabrics, perfect for the summer when it is too hot to layer!

My Little Koala

Cocoa Brown One Hour Tan Mouse

When I tried this and it looked great, I was surprised that it was only £9.99! You apply it with a pink mitt that comes with the mouse and was it for the tan to develop before you wash it off. It is pretty fool proof and shows that you don’t have to buy anything too expensive for it to be good.

Cocoa Brown

Chicamama London

We stumbled on Chicama after a spot of late night shopping this week and couldn’t believe our luck that we managed to get a table as it was rammed. On first impressions it is a seafood restaurant but it is actually Peruvian inspired. Do you know what Peruvian food is like? No, neither did I but I urge you to go here on a date night with friends and get a few sharing plates – especially the Ceviche. It was phenomenal and the staff are lovely too!

Chicamama

Woman & Home Feature – June Edition

Very excitingly I was featured in Woman & Home June Edition talking about our families stance on children and the amount of screen time we allow, if any at all! We were smack bang in the middle…

Woman & Home

There are some new clubs for half term over on ‘What’s On’ and there are also a few new entries in the Directory.

Do email me if you would like a mention!

Hope you have a lovely day and are enjoying the sunshine. If you need a beach cover up, I have that covered here

Holiday Style : Beach Cover Up

Whether you need one for half term or not (although judging by today – you may be at the lido more than you thought over the break!) now is the time to buy your beach cover up.  Why?  When you do actually need one, all the best ones will be sold out! It’s the law of averages. The way of the world. Excuse the cliches but its true. “Buy when you see” is my motto (within reason of course!)So, here is a little heads up to what is out there – dresses to throw on when you are around the pool and you need to take the little one to to the loo and don’t fancy walking through the restaurant semi naked. Or perhaps an easy little number that you can leave on the sand and not worry that little Timmy is actually using it to wipe the suncream out of his eyes.

Anyway, you get the picture – here are my top picks…

Seraphina Bella Gold Palm Tree Dress £95

This is beautiful and I love the feminine print and cool fabric.

Bela Dress

Little Leggies Blue Cotton Beach Dress £30

This just has I am on holiday allover it. Neon. Pom Poms. Versatile shoulders (if you re eating burnt you can pull them up over your shoulders, want to catch the last of the sun, pull it down!)

np3_6072-1

TLM Edit Black Crochet Cover Up £28

This works for both the above scenarios – all without breaking the bank and looking like a minx at the same time!

htb1npocqpxxxxxgaxxxq6xxfxxxb

Marks & Spencer Long Sleeve Tunic Dress £45

Tunic dresses ain’t going anywhere and this one is understated whilst also giving a little hello to the boho vibe a la moment.

tunic dress

Naftul Embroidered Trim Mini Dress £150

This is back on TLM Edit again as it has proved immensely popular. This would work in the evening too or around a really sophisticated day time scenario.

naftul beach cover up

TLM Edit Pink Ruffle Beach Cover Up £28

I mean, how fun is this!!! I cannot wait to do a little jog around the swimming pool in this and I Have no doubt it all draw a few (admiring) glances too!

beach cover up

Marie & Lola Coral & White Embroidered Dress £75

From one of my favourite brands who does beachwear very well, this embroidered dress is winking at me – I am a sucker for neon.

coral

Marks and Spencer Pom Pom Contrasting Shift Dress £19.50

So simple and elegant and would allow you to get stuck into the calamari at lunch without worrying too much about your mum tum.

bardot shift dress

Hush Evangeline Dress £65

This is a pretty versatile dress for the summer as it can be dressed up or down, but it has definitely made my beach cover up cut.

1422x2040-fit-drs98-wbl-03

Sister Design Passos Pink with Mint Trim £85

This is my holiday treat to myself. Not one to actually suit pale pink, I do love the colour so thought if I can’t wear it when I have a bit of a tan when can I wear it. It is so pretty in itself, I don’t think anyone will be noticing what I look like in it!

Sister design

Hush Rio Maxi Dress £75

Again, a tube top might feel a little 2008 but they are great for tanning!

rio maxi

Hush Macrame Beach Dress £65

You have to have a bit of yellow somewhere in your wardrobe and if you have the correct colouring for bright yellow (like super tanned and dark hair?) then this will work wonders.

1422x2040-fit-drs105-dan-01

Next Red Embroidered Dress £45

So the Next top caused an instastir and the dress version is also making waves. I would feel too shrouded by this dress but if you are tall it could work for you.

next beach dress

Selected Femme Summer Dress £49.95

Simple. Pretty.

se521c0eb-a118

Pitusa Pom Pom Festival £79.99

I have had to include both the black and white versions of this pom pom dress as they are both lovely.

Pom Pom Pitusa

Pitusa Pom Pom Black £79.99

Ella’s Books : Get Your Photos Into a Book

When Ella Leighton emailed asking if she could create a bespoke book of a family memory, event or occasion I immediately thought how wonderful it would be if she could put our recent family photos taken by Carle Monge into a keepsake book, as I know they will just sit on my computer forever and a day.

Keepsake book

I sent off the link to all the photos with a few numbers that she had to omit but trusted her to choose the best ones and arrange them as she sees fit.

lucinda-robins-book-6

We were so unbelievably delighted with the book.  This is the back and the front.

The quality was superb and the layout she had chosen for our family was spot on. She even took the design of one of our sofa cushions (made by Lara Van Lynden – see pic above) and even turned it into a border for a couple of the photos.

Ella studied BA Book Art and Design at London College of Communication. She then worked at a London Children’s Book Publishers and assists with her mum’s photography business, Laura Eperjesi Photography, which led her to start up Ella’s Books.

Ella

My book design service is aimed to help busy mums and dads who don’t have the time to sort through their holiday, wedding, honeymoon, baby and family photos. I understand that it’s on their list of things to do list but i’s hard to get started. Who wants to spend hours doing it themselves? The photo folder is growing by the day! I want to share with lots of lovely people that I can help you have these books of your own with a little helping hand from me.

Nowadays we take so many digital photos but don’t do much with them and luckily Ella’s Book is here to help families collect their memories into beautiful bespoke photo books.

Ella is really talented and has a very careful and creative eye. If you have a pile of photos sitting on your hard drive, I urge you to send them all over to her and trust that she will be able to sort them and compile a beautiful look for you to keep forever.

Ella’s Favourites

Shop :  Anthropology. I cannot get enough of their home decor, accessories and books they have in store, some beautiful designs!

Website : Kula Yoga in Clapham

Hotel : Strawberry Hill, in the Blue Mountain, Jamaica. Bliss is my only way of describing it.

Holiday Destination : I am travelling to Marrakech, Morocco at the end of this month. I can’t wait to explore and capture the mosques, palaces and gardens.  I also love creating mini vlogs each week, giving an insight about what I’m designing on and get up to.

Holiday Style : 9 Flattering Summer Tops

Before I show you my edit of flattering summer tops that are new in at Marks & Spencer, I just wanted to share a new piece of research. Of 3,000 Brits surveyed,  96% of us live life on autopilot. The result? We say yes four times each day when we want to say no.  I know by the time the kids have left to school, I have said yes too many times. The worst Yes was spoken by me today, when I said Yes to Elsa coming to my 3 year olds birthday party – ahhh it’s next week. Is that going to happen? I really hope she forgets!

Dr Mark Williamson, director of Action for Happiness says

Autopilot makes it harder for us to make good choices, so we feel we’re living someone else’s life.  We must reconnect with what really matters; prioritise to-do lists, stop comparing ourselves to others, try new things and learn to say no (kindly). If it doesn’t make you feel extraordinary, say no – we only get one life, so let’s spend it well.

We are all on autopilot and we need to slow down and think wisely before committing ourselves.  One of my favourite sayings that I *try* to live by is…

Let your yes be yes and your no be no.

Don’t say yes out of obligation or because you have space in your diary. Save your energy.

Anyway, here are 9 tops that I would say yes to (actually have already bought the first one and I LOVE it)

Embroidered Bardot Top Navy £25

Hurry, this top is selling fast!!

bardot top

Luckily I got my clammy hands on one. It is my piece de resistance.

Dark – doesn’t show dirt/jam fingers

Off the shoulder – who has chubby shoulders?

Tummy skimming – enough said

Good length – no builders bum with this one unless you are really being over at Gymboree!

Embroidered Bardot Top £25

This is the blue & white stripe version of the navy top I could wax lyrical about. It is so flattering  and even if you raise your arms like you just don’t care, it still works and doesn’t expose anything as your under arms stop it riding up. (If that doesn’t make sense, buy it and you will see what I mean)

You can’t go wrong with a white top and this one with triple stitch detailing is sure to blow the lights out.

This is super useful school run top to throw on and still look stylish.
