I hope you had a really Happy Christmas and you are enjoying the family time (and not just biding time till they go back to school..)

Here is a little review of The London Mummy in 2015. These were the posts, pictures and articles most engaged with, by YOU!

PRODUCTS

School Run Boots and School Run Trainers were my most popular posts of the whole year! From feedback I have received, I think it worked as we are all too busy to research ourselves so like it when it arrives in our lap!

Useful Baby Items was a very reflective post and actually now I am 8 months on from that post, I think a ‘Part 2’ is in order.

Personalised Stationary with your own painted picture on it!  Alex’s stationary is going so well, you can now commission her to do a ‘proper’ painting!

Harriet Hoult’s Art is one to watch. I love the bright colours. I have just the right spot on my kitchen wall… 🙂

Of course, not forgetting the post I wrote on if you want 3 kids – Time For Number 3! and my ‘reflective’ Birthday post 35 Things I have Learnt in 35 Years.

I started a Facebook page in October to post articles and these were the most ‘clicked’ on.

The Key Jar is a jar that you put in 48 questions to pull out whenever you are all together as a family. My 3 year old answered every single one ‘I want to go to a fair’ as he is still slightly young (!) but if you have any 5+ it is a great idea to get them thinking.

This article A Fat Lot of Good Enough was encouraging to those of us who have moments that we aren’t doing as well at parenting as we hope for!

One Question one mother asked her now very successful sons every night…

Maybe a little too late, but this article on Not Over Indulging Your Children is great.

These were a few of my favourite snaps on my Instagram page

THANK YOU

  • If you have read The London Mummy from the beginning, thank you for taking a chance on me when I launched in April 2015 and if you have just started following me, hello!

  • If you have any recommendations for things to do, places to see or friends who are launching their own business and want a Spotlight, please email me hello@thelondonmummy.com

  • It would also be great to hear what you would like to see more (or less) of… TLM is predominantly about supporting small companies like Crane Bump Baby and Muklet

  • Lastly, please forward this email to any friends who you think might find The London Mummy useful. I don’t plan on world domination (yet) but I have lots of exciting posts planned in 2016 so don’t want anyone to miss out 🙂

What’s On : Television For Little Ones Over Christmas

As soon as the Christmas TV line up was announced, we bought a Radio Times and sat with our highlighter and marked appropriate films over the Christmas holiday season for the little ones.  (I’m not actually exaggerating!)  Obviously we plan to play family games most of the time so this was just in case they needed some downtime in front of the television… 😉

I have included films that are showing on terrestrial (between 0700 and 1900) as there is a problem nowadays with too much choice, so easiest to keep it ‘old school…’ and some grandparents don’t have Sky!

Belmond : A Journey On The Festive Express

On Saturday, my 5 year old Hugo and I, were invited on the Festive Express.  It was an epic train journey through the British countryside in a beautiful Belmond British Pullman train (sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express!)  Departing from Victoria, it was packed with festive fun for the little ones, organised beautifully by the ‘ultimate travel curator’ Belmond.

FullSizeRender(106)

We were met at Victoria by a choir singing us onto our train carriage.

The table settings were super smart and the food was absolutely top notch!

The highlight of the day was the superb entertainment from Sharky and George who jested, joked & entertained there was through the British countryside.  The highlight was the tug of war down the middle of the carriage and Grandmothers footsteps with a sweet scramble at the end.

A very exciting guest turned up on our way back into a London – Father Christmas, ladedn with a large bag of presents for each child. I couldn’t believe how generous he was before the actual big day itself!

The whole day was so fun & spoiling, we are definitely going to go again next year but maybe i’ll take my second son this time – the oldest can’t have all the fun!

Words Of Wisdom To My Children

When I was at school, my friends used to pull my leg that I was the Queen of the cliches. I always liked a good saying and could actually have a whole conversation using quotes. (You know how you can be a bit unusual when you are a teenager?) Below are a few bits of wisdom I have learnt over the years.

I am not great at most of them, but I am learning and hope to model them and pass them on to my children.

cropped-fullsizerender.jpg

  1. Don’t feel the pressure to reply too quickly. You will shoot yourself in the foot when people expect a quick reply.
  2. Save as much money as you can before children as it is almost impossible to do once they are on the scene.
  3. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Think bigger picture. (Middle class/1st World problems etc)
  4. Practice/revise. It is so much more relaxing if you are prepared.
  5. Embrace the carnage. If you try and control it, you will give yourself a stress head.
  6. Don’t take on too much. Things always crop up at the last minute (often the best) and if you don’t – bonus, you have some time to yourself.
  7. Make plans with flexible people before your children are atleast 1 as often plans need to change.
  8. But in principle, let your yes be yes and your no be no.
  9. Don’t fret – chances are you won’t remember what you were worrying about in a month’s time, let alone when you are 80.
  10. Don’t worry what people think of you, they probably aren’t thinking about you at all.
  11. Tomato pasts suits all ages. Keep the ingredients stocked in your cupboard.
  12. It is a sin to take offense.  Don’t take things personally – they are usually not directed at you.
  13. Hurting people hurt.  When I am tired or grumpy, those I love often get the worst of me – same can be from a stranger in the street or a friend.
  14. Depth of friendship doesn’t relate to length of acquaintance, but old friends are great as they know your merits and faults already.
  15. Don’t waste time trying to make people like you, be a good friend to those who already do.
  16. Amazon is not the cheapest place to buy things!
  17. Lowering your voice actually works when it comes to disciplining. It freaks them out. (This needs major practice).
  18. Find a style that suits you and buy it in a few different colours. Know the colours that suit you!
  19. Have a make up lesson. It will stand you in good stead for a long time. Don’t follow any make up fashions beyond the age of 30. (There is already a backlash to contouring?)
  20. Jack of a few trades and master of some much more effective than jack of all trades, master of 1. (Unless you show an aptitude for one thing from an early age, best to try everything).
  21. Have a pedicure. People notice the state of your feet despite being the furthest from your face.  (My older brother taught me this!)
  22. Try not to answer your phone when you are with people. It is a clear sign the phone is more important than the people you are with.
  23. Don’t use technology at the table. Sounds obvious, but I have been guilty and it is so rude to the people you are with.
  24. Go through your emails once or twice a day. Grazing is bad for the brain.
  25. Share your encouraging thought for that person. Don’t be shy, it can make there week.
  26. You won’t please 100% people 100% of the time so just please those closest to you who are alongside you and will be around the longest.
  27. Always ask, it does no harm. (Think upgrades etc)
  28. Send a card.  Even a Touchnote qualifies. Phone on someone’s birthday! Text shmext (if they are a proper pal). Birthday Alarm saves my bacon remembering birthdays…
  29. Know your own mind. Don’t bend your opinions to suit the people you are with.
  30. Vulnerability begets vulnerability. If you are open about how you really are they will usually do the same which will bring you closer.
  31. Don’t expect a thank you – do it because you wanted to do it and anything else is a bonus.
  32. Live in the moment.  Don’t wait for ‘when that happens I will be happy…’
  33. If you are feeling low, do something for someone else.
  34. Go in the opposite spirit. If someone is grumpy, be happy, if someone is negative be enthusiastic etc. Works a treat.
  35. It’s not all about you!

What’s On : Christmas For Little Ones

In October, I wrote a post What’s On : Theatre For Little Ones during the Autumn Term and thought a Christmas one was in order.  There is SO MUCH GOING ON out there (slightly makes me feel exhausted already) so these are my top picks. If you haven’t booked anything festive for your family in the run up to Christmas, hopefully these will whet your appetite…

Paddington Bear’s First Concert at Cadogan Hall

This looks adorable and I’m tempted to go on my tod without a child in tow. Anything Paddington and Cadogan is a winner so when the two combine it’s sure to be wow!

unnamed

Santa Land at Winter Wonderland

We go the afternoon of my birthday at the beginning of December and head straight to Santa Land. It is rather commercial but it has flashing lights and Christmas songs pelting out from every corner to really get you in the festive spirit – we love it. (We went on a Saturday once and were nearly crushed by the crowd so hopefully they have changed the lay of the land, although I won’t be risking it and will stick to whisking the kids up there after school for now!)

Father Christmas At The Hall at Royal Albert Hall

A 1 hr 15 minute tour of the Royal Albert hall with music, mince pies, workshops and a special visit from you know who.

After Dark Christmas Trail at Kew Gardens

We haven’t done this yet as it hasn’t worked logistically but I have heard on good authority from a few friends that say it is lovely and well worth the money. Next year when youngest is 2 we might go for it..

FullSizeRender(73)

Raymond Briggs Father Christmas at The Lyric

We have done this every year since our 5 year old was 1 (so the last 4 years). Yawn you might think, but no! I am a firm believer that repetition in this frenetic life is good for the soul and my oldest gets more out of it each year. As the little ones come up the ranks they are (will) start to enjoy it too. It is great for getting into the mood (although be warned this Father Christmas is a bit grumpy!)

Festive Express Train Journey departing London Victoria

This train journey takes you on a round trip from London to Brighton and back and includes a 3 course champagne lunch, magicians, entertainment from Sharky & George for the little ones, not forgetting FC will be gracing the carriages for all the good children!

FullSizeRender(74)

Santa Claus and The Night Before Christmas at New Wimbledon Theatre

I haven’t seen but we love the book…

FullSizeRender(76)

Dick Wittington at Fulham Palace

We went to The Wizard of Oz here and it was wonderfully interactive as you are sat on the same level as the cast. I have no doubt this production by the same company will be just as good.

Kids Club at GOAT : Chelsea

We call ourselves the ‘restaurant clearers’. Usually before we have even started our main course, we look around and realise that other tables are empty – not through finishing their meal but because they have MOVED to a quieter spot.  Not on Sunday though. We went to try out the Kids Club on Sunday at the GOAT in Chelsea and it was fantastic.

Goat outside sideview

Not one to brag about my children (5ys, 3ys and 1yr), let alone their behaviour, I must say they were very well behaved.  It obviously helped that they were only at the table to eat their lunch, but still – it was a joy. In between courses, the older two, instead of bribing them with a pack of colouring pencils and drawing sheet – were amused AWAY from the table at what can only be described as similar to a full on kids party.

kids birthday example

Our usual motto with necessary things like feeding in public is ‘quick games a good game’ but we spent two hours whiling away lunchtime with red wine and adult conversation knowing our children were not only being entertained (in a different room) but they were loving every moment.

FullSizeRender(3)

GOAT has cottoned on to the need that in order for parents to enjoy their lunch, it really helps if the little ones are amused. Every Sunday between 12-3, Mr Froggle is downstairs with games, magic and dancing and your children can come and go between courses. Each week there is a different theme so you could make it a regular Sunday tradition!  The children’s menu is more sophisticated than the usual pizza pasta on offer and out eldest had calamari, followed by Mac and cheese, rounded off with a pistachio brownie and ice cream. (Ok, I actually I finished it as he was slightly too eager to get back downstairs!)

FullSizeRender(6)

The restaurant was filled with children and high chairs but not in a headache inducing way. The staff were welcoming and accommodated our request for an extra high chair, a place to put our buggy and some straws!

GOAT

GOAT on a Sunday is a perfect place to meet friends with other children and judging by how busy it was, book a table pronto as this restaurant is set to be very busy in the lead up to Christmas with families combining eating and children. They have totally nailed a relaxing and fun environment, all very reasonably priced. Bravo!

Pros & Cons Of Three Children

It happened again this weekend. ‘So, what’s it like having three children?’ It is usually asked by people who have already decided they are going for the hat trick.  I am not going to advise you on whether to have 3 or not, but I do have a few thoughts about the spacing between them. We have 3 (4, 2 and 1 years old) with less than 2 years between each. Now number 3 is on the move, I am getting a true taste of what friends further down the line said to me about the 3rd ‘oh the first year is easy, wait till they start moving’. Yes. Thanks for that.

We decided before we married that three was our magic number. Whatever combination we had, we would still go for number 3. We both come from a ‘Jack and Jill’ pair – hubby is the oldest to a sister and I am a younger sister to a brother so we thought let’s mix it up, break with family tradition and get the hard work out the way. Ha. More fool us! Whatever number and age gap you have it is always going to be hard work!

Ranulph Sports day 173

 Let’s start with cons

Time off. There is none. Especially at the moment. The little one wants me and that’s fine. It’s just a stage! Lunch time sleep you ask? Yes – if they slept at the same time I would. But they don’t. At least by now, I know everything is a stage and ‘this too shall pass’. I have mastered the art of cooking/wrapping/typing etc with a bent elbow to jab them away when they come too close.

1 on 1 time. Number 3 gets plenty of 1 on 1 as number 2 is at nursery 3 mornings but the oldest two don’t get as much as I would like to give them.

Outnumbered. Having two close in age is like having twins – 2 in nappies/can’t feed themselves/both need a buggy but one is slightly more advanced (i.e not on exactly same routine/into the same things but still both drunk sailors). Fine if you don’t have an oldest one being set aside whilst you deal with the aforementioned twins.

A Car Journey. My Achilles heel. Prone to impatience, shouting and losing it. All of us. A particular low point recently was when number 2 was sick on number 1 who shrieked slightly too dramatically and woke up number 3.  All crying. It wasn’t a pretty sight.

Car seats. 3 car seats along the back. Good luck with that. Won’t go into logistics but email me if you want some pointers. It is possible!

Social life. This will suffer. A wise friend who now has 4 once said, if you suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out) or are a ‘people pleaser’ don’t have a 3rd, as you will miss out and are likely to offend people with your inability to be the friend you once were.  I remind myself it is just a stage.

Weekends away.  We started to reduce our weekends away when we had two very ‘active’ boys and it was more relaxing for them to jump on our sofas/throw our food – delete as appropriate and since number 3 came along we have bedded down even more so. That’s fine anyway, as to get to away – we would have to drive. (Already mentioned).

Paraphernalia. Too much with 3 little ones.  Our house has looked like a playgroup for a long time with no respite.

Play dates. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting a gaggle of little ones together at home. I probably prefer home matches to away matches as then I don’t have to take half of the contents of my house too but I can no longer feed a street as I once did. I have enough of my own who need feeding (literally).

Sleep. More specifically not waking up naturally for a good chunk of your life. I can’t remember the last time I was woken up by anything other than a wail/cry/shout.

Childcare. Particularly applies to weekends or school holidays. No one can look after 3 under 4 unless you were trained at Norland, so even the most dutiful and kind Granny needs another set of hands.  This is an extra expense so a wedding for example ends up being a massive hit.

Marta photos 001

Now for the pros

Interests. Ok, so number 1 doesn’t like opening and shutting doors like number 3. But you get me. They are still all happy in the small playground rather splitting into the small and large playground for example, as they are all in the same age range.

Baby gear. It didn’t go out of date nor did we lose it to lending. There was no debate where to store it in between babies. We kept it at home knowing that the time would hopefully quickly come round to get it all out again. Currently in the chucking out stage which is uber satisfying. (If you want a 50 ft wide baby bouncer it is looking for a good home as you read).

Toys. We haven’t had to pack up toys when one stage ends as before we know it the next one is at that stage.

Activities. No holding number 1 back whilst you wait till number 3 is ready (hoping to apply this to skiing next year when number 1 is only 5. I will be able to join in too as I won’t be pregnant!)

TV. Number 3 is quite happy to watch Spider-man and Power Rangers. She knows nothing else (and won’t ever be allowed to by the looks of it).

Sport. Similar age so similar stage. Less one sided. Number 3 won’t always be the fielder as she will be in the mix (and assertive enough) to play alongside.

Clothes. They can almost sort of nearly sometimes wear one another’s clothes. That’s if you number won’t mind frayed cords. And number 2 and 3 are same nappy size!

Parties. Can do joint. Just think of those teenage years!

Friends. They all get on with each other’s friends. Number 1’s friends love playing with number 2’s and 3’s (even though the latter’s are in short supply) and vice versa. And if there are no friends about, they have each other.

You. You can get your work/social life/body back without knowing a self imposed relapse is on the cards.  That’s if you have any energy left!

Family. We are a much tighter unit as we stick together as no one (yet) needs to be taken off to do other things.  We are also even closer to our wider family as we see them more – they aren’t intimidated by the circus coming to stay.

Our theory was that if you know you are going to do it, let’s just crack on with it before the proverbial ship sails.  I can see that the bigger the age the easier it is – but who said easy was as much fun!

Want more?
