Mim Quin-Harkin : Parasol Rose, Sleepwear

One of the best things about clearing out my maternity wardrobe were binning my pitiful excuses for sleepwear that I subjected my husband to during the course of my pregnancies (and beyond).

Outsize ‘Class of ’99’ Leavers Rugby tops and extra large Abercrombie PJ bottoms to name but a few. As much as I love a bargain, you CANNOT buy cheap silk. It doesn’t exisit. It is synthetic made to look like silk. It will stick to your skin and make your hair stand on end. Trust me, I have tried. Now I am an adult I think I deserve genuine silk! So, I am so excited to have discovered Parasol Rose*.

Parasol Rose is a UK based business, started by Londoner Mim Quin-Harkin.  She wanted to create beautiful products with gorgeous design and fabric detail that are all made in the UK, to create and pass on the wealth and knowledge we have here in the UK to future generations.

unknown

Parasol Rose uses the finest silks and french laces to create designs that capture the essence and elegance of vintage style.

Parasol Rose offers a collection of elegant underdressing solutions, that can also be worn as outerwear, including slips, chemises, camisoles and dresses. Each piece could also be worn as underwear, to compliment an outfit or by itself as a slip dress. There is also a bespoke service so you can choose the colour, trim, style and length to make your perfect piece.

I especially love this hot pink slip.

Grace silk chemise slip - Hot Pink

They would be a beautiful present for a bride to be or even as a Fathers Day present to yourself.  Whatever the occasion, they are timeless pieces that will continue to delight you in years to come.

Mim’s Favourite’s

Shop : Viola London, Connaught Street for ‘making me cool with its style and individuality.’

Restaurant : Granger & Co, Westbourne Grove ‘it is light and fresh delightful dining at any point during the day.

Hotel : Barnsley House, Gloucestershire ‘beautiful spaces and garden is spectacular’

Website : The Trainline

Holiday Destination :  ‘Ibiza for sun, fun, freedom and to feed the soul.  Cornwall and Brittany for beautiful seaside cliffs and landscapes, butter and  family.  The Alps for snow fun.  New York for energy’

Parenting Tip : Read The Twits to your children for amazing life lessons. (Mim has 3 neices and 4 Godchildren!) Mim’s favourite quote from The Twits

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.’

‘Holiday’ Dresses

It’s all systems go as everyone knows they have about 7 weeks till term finishes and then we are Amelia Freer, Uber & Mr Marvel all rolled into one. One of things that has to be sorted before they break up is your summer holiday wardobe.  Namely holiday dresses.  Have you tried on dresses, or anything for that matter, with sprogs in tow? Yes, not relaxing at all.

Here are a few from the high street and I have also included a couple from my new website TLM Edit. Please be assured, I will only recommend items from this website if I truly love them. Most of my picks will continue to range from handmade to the high street and a few designer if I think it is REALLY worth it (ie. timeless)

So, admin aside – I promised you ‘Holiday Dresses’ in my recent ‘School Run’ Dresses so here they are!

Embroidered Trim Midi Dress £120

If you can avoid sticky fingers, this dress is beautiful.

Melissa Odabash Fruly Woven Dress £172

Easy to throw on and very feminine. Probably best at the end of the holiday when you have a bit of colour.

Emboridered Tunic Dress £130

Not only is it red, I love the low slung waistline.

Embroidered Love Dress £150

Who can’t resist a dress with the word ‘love’ in its description. So feminine.

Guess Venice Summer Dress £76

The off the shoulder trend is still in full throttle, so grab this whilst you can – it has already been reduced.

Naftul, Eyelit Trim £126

I reallyyyy want this dress.

Pale Pink Loose Fit Pocket Dress, £90

This also comes in 4 other colours, but I chose this one as it is not often you see pale pink T Shirt dresses. Great pocket detail.

Guess Sondra Summer Dress £76

Super cute and a flattering colour for all skin tones. Would only wear this on holiday though. (Why do we feel more daring when abroad?!)

Long Kaftan Dress £90

Perfect over shorts as per this photo or bikini on holiday. Lovely if you are on the taller side.

Family Life

Flying With 3 Kids

Take lollies and an Ipad and you will be fine. Ha. I wish it was that simple! Here are my top tips for flying with kids… and surviving.

We took our car to the airport due to car seats not being in taxis and all that shizzle. We used Park & Go as it was the cheapest at only £56 for the week. Couldn’t recommend it more and so nice to have your car ready for you on your return.

Check in online rather than at the aiport – the former’s queue is so much shorter and you can pick your seats (so you aren’t at the bag with the stag do).

Leave longer than you think. Due to stronger regulations and more safety precautions, the whole checking in and passport control takes alot longer than it used to. Not to mention the slog to the gate. I would get there atleast 2 hours before. (Oh how times have changed).

Take enough water for your journey up to secruity but empty all your water bottles before. They actually took a baby bottle with 3oz of water off to be tested which added another 20 minutes to our journey…

Cartons of milk are fine even if they are over the limit of 30ml of liquid. The airport secrutiy staff are still human!

These Anna Lomax bags are brilliant for your liquids.

Be the last one to board. Obviously, why make 3 children sit for longer than they have to!

Our youngest screamed on take off so I shut the blind and it calmed her down a bit. Just make sure no one sees you do it….

Walk, walk, walk up and down the aisle. It majorly annoys the airhostesses but it is preferable to trying to tame wild animals by keeping them in their seat and saves the person in front of them the constant obligatory kick in the seat.

I just didn’t take enough distractions namely stickers, snap. colouring as I thought they wouldn’t be interested. ERROR. Luckily, we had a kind Auntie who was well prepared and shared her bits and bobs and our youngest (when she had calmed down).

The Usborne Sticker books from Wordery are ace.

Pipity are a life line when it comes to travelling craft. Their carry cases are so practical, fun and filled with lots of activities.

Pipity Activity Case

Save up the technology for when you are desperate and make sure everything is fully charged!  Make sure it is password protected. I have just heard of a 6 year old totting up a £600 Apple bill. Here is a list of 56 Ipad apps and games for all ages, boys and girls. We love Toca Boca!

Snacks, snacks, snacks. These Go Go’s from Little Dish are easy, healthy and they don’t break easily in your bag.

Cheap car hire is probably cheap for a reason, that you have to collect the car from miles away. Check when you book how easy it is to collect your hire car.

Anyway, whatever it is, it’s fun and certainly something different from the normal park shmark etc. Just remember, if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail…  x

Cocktails & Mocktails

If you are feeling a bit fried over half term, meet up with a friend and take the tribe to Balans Soho Society at the Westfield, Shepherd’s Bush for a cocktail.

Ok, so the Westfield gives me a slight headache if I spend too long in there (although there is loads of free stuff that would keep the kids amused such as the ‘musical armchairs’ and a good dose of lego building in the lego shop to name a few).

FullSizeRender

We went to the Kids Club Cinema first. It is on every Saturday and a Sunday at 1030. (I don’t advise going on a Sunday though as I snuck out with the youngest to do some shopping but hte shops didn’t open till 12. Of course. Doh.)

IMG_7346

Away from the main concourse of restaurants, Balans Soho Society is a little gem of a restaurant not only serving all your favourites beautifully, they have just started a Cocktail and Mocktail menu for you and the little ones. (The former for you, the latter for them – unless they are a bit hyper then knock them out with a cocktail – joke).

IMG_7359

They are presented exquisitely and taste as good as they look. I went for a gin based ‘Mummy’s Pick Me Up’. Alex had a slightly more manly sounding ‘The Society Teddy Bear(!)’ which included bourbon, vanilla, cinnamon and cranberry.  The kids tried all of the mocktails – the favourite was unsurpsingly ‘Cheeky Little Monkey!’  We were even allowed to take home the bear bottles!

IMG_7366

Icce cream, pancakes AND maple syrup. We rolled out of the restaurant! The kids from food and ourselves from one or two ‘Teddy Bears!’

IMG_7382

Try it, you will be looked after so well – the staff are fun & friendly (especially Elias who had of averting disasters before they happened!)

Books Little People

The Pregnancy & Newborn Edit

Despite this blog being called ‘The London MUMMY’, I don’t actually post that much on one major part of being a mother – pregnancy & babies. There is a plethora of fantastic blogs & websites more geared towards that stage (my favourite is My Baba) whereas I am more focused on activities, fashion & championing new business’s.

However, when the lovely author Lucinda Van Der Hart, who is expecting her 3rd child after a 5 year gap, offered to do a guest post on what’s new in this underworld of pregnancy & baby products & services, I was delighted, as I was intrigued to know. She lives in Barnes and is author of Soul Food For Mums & The Pregnancy Book. Let me hand her over…

I’m 35 weeks pregnant with my third baby, and wiggling on a birthing ball as I type. My elder two children are now the ripe old ages of seven and five – which means it has been a few years since I last went through pregnancy. And when it comes to ingenious products for mums-to- be, it seems that a lot has changed in that time.  This time around, I’ve enjoyed discovering a selection of the gorgeous and useful that simply didn’t exist with rounds one and two. Here’s my edit of some wonderful finds.

1. The Sassy Bloom Box

If you are looking for a baby shower or new mummy gift, the Sassy Bloom box ticks every box – a prettily-packaged box of goodies delivered to your (or a friend’s) door. Costing from £23 each, boxes are available for a mum-to- be in her third trimester and can then be tailored to a baby’s stage, up to the age of three. Order a one-off box, or have a box delivered monthly. I sent off for the third trimester box, which included a stroller frame bag (for carrying tricky items such as flowers or older children’s toys on the back of a buggy), scrummy toiletries for mum and baby, a baby blanket and a buggy hook.

2. Mamaway 3-in- 1 Lightweight Down Jacket

This ingenious invention is must for every fan of baby-wearing – an ultra lightweight down jacket complete with a zip-in panel to extend its size for wear during pregnancy, or for use while your baby is strapped to your front in a sling. The panel can also be removed all together, turning it back into a normal jacket again, so this really has potential for longevity. The jacket packs neatly away into a small drawstring bag – I’ll be keeping mine in my changing bag at all times.

Currently available at the discounted price of £76.30.

3. Amoralia’s Nursing Bras

Seven years ago, buying a nursing bra meant purchasing a functional, and quite frankly, very unattractive piece of underwear. Now there’s a host of gorgeous nursing bras to choose from. I love Amoralia’s Allure in ruby – a sumptuous, deep burgundy shade with black lace detail and velvet straps. It features a removable flexi underwire, enabling you to decide whether or not you want that extra shape or support. It’ll only set you back £39.

4. The Squeezy App

Not so glam perhaps, but the reality is that every mum and mum-to- be has to do those annoying pelvic floor exercises. Recommended by my physiotherapist, this handy little NHS app costs just £2.99 and will not only remind you to do your squeezes at set times each day, but also give you instructions to follow for each set of exercises. Ta da! Exercises done. Almost.

5. The Private Pregnancy Show

If you are considering private medical care for your pregnancy and delivery, you may like to pay a visit to London’s first Private Pregnancy Show. Taking place from 21-22 May 2016 in Mayfair, the show will host workshops and seminars from leading UK doctors, midwives and motherhood specialists on the benefits of private care for pregnancy and childbirth, breastfeeding, complementary approaches to birth preparation, returning to work and more. Tickets are £20.

6. Leah Sarago’s Fit and Sleek Prenatal Physique

Somehow, sweating it out in the gym with an enormous bump on show has never appealed to me, so in pregnancy I turn to exercise DVDs. Five years ago, Davina McCall’s ‘My Pre and Post natal workouts’ DVD was pretty much the only acceptable home pregnancy workout. Now there’s a much bigger selection of DVDs available, and my favourite is Leah Sarago’s. This is made up of 15-minute segments – select which ones you want and put your own workout together. For me this offers a strong balance of challenging an expanding body, building strength and preventing injury.

8. The Baby Book: How to enjoy year one by Rachel Waddilove

I can’t strictly say I didn’t know that this book existed when I fell pregnant this time – I had it in an earlier version and used it endlessly with my other two babies. But Rachel, who has extensive experience as a maternity nurse and baby sleep expert and has helped Zara Philips, Gwyneth Paltrow and Minnie Driver with their babies, has recently launched a fully revised and updated edition.

7. Cook’s 10% Discount For New Mums

This is another fabulously practical gift that I would heartily recommend for any new parent – a hamper or vouchers from the makers of delicious homecooked freezer meals at Cook. Parents of new babies can receive the discount for six months after their baby’s arrival.

Fish_Pie_1pt_01_lowres_RGB

9. WaterWipes

Here’s a product that I can’t quite believe wasn’t invented earlier – the chemical-free baby wipe. WaterWipes contain 99.9% water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract, a natural skin conditioner. Available from Boots, Superdrug and Tesco’s among other retailers, I’ll be buying these for use on baby’s delicate skin.

12 packets for £25

10. The Honest Mum’s Club: Parenting. Depression. Cake. by Hannah Oakland

Every mum will experience the baby blues at some stage during the early days and weeks with a newborn. But at least one in seven mums go on to do battle with postnatal depression. In this newly-published book, Hannah Oakland bravely shares her experience of this often-hidden illness, approaching a serious topic with much-needed honesty and humour.

‘School Run’ Dresses

Despite the weather going two steps forward, one step back, at least it is going in an upward curve towards a consistent 20c by the end of May. I don’t know about you, but I felt completely stung in the wardrobe department during the last ‘heatwave’. The only clothes cool enough (temp wise) were maternity dresses that were still lurking around from two years ago.

Anyway, not to labour on about an unsatisfactory wardrobe or the British weather, I have done a little advance planning so I am more prepared when it is time to don less attire. These are my top ‘throw on dresses’.  They are simple and understated – easy to whack on when you are in a rush but want to stay cool.

G Star Boyfriend Denim Shirt Dress £100

Can’t go wrong with a shirt dress and in denim, it’s an even younger vibe.

Danielle Dress £75 Hush

If you dare to wear a bit of red, keep jewellery plain and shoes flat. Voila!

Florence Dress £60 Hush

Love the electric blue.

Whistles Josi Black Dress £95

Love a little black dress in the summer and this loose fit dress from Whistles is casual and chic.

Image 1 of Whistles Josie Smock Dress

Onlymyrina Summer Dress £23

For this price you could buy the mustard and the navy. It is long enough to wear solo and just about short enough to wear over jeans if you get a bit chilly.

FullSizeRender(296)

Blue Summer Dress £34 Gap

Was undecided whether to put this on my upcoming ‘Holiday Dresses’ or here. So versatile – you could build sandcastles in it and hot foot it down the road to school.

FullSizeRender(294)

Set Summer Dress £280

The price reflects the quality, so if you were looking for something that will last a few years in a universally flattering colour, this is for you.

FullSizeRender(289)

Vanessa Bruno Sleeveless Ruffle Dress £210

I am very attracted to this colour. So much so, that I want this dress.  (Although to pull of the low slung waist you have to have pretty long legs.)

FullSizeRender(297)

Zalando Essentials £13

No, she she isn’t in scrubs (a surgeon doesn’t belt their waist!)  It also comes in five other colours. At that price, it is worth a look.

Taffeta Gray : Five Boys Clothing

With 5 boys between Taffeta and her friend Sophia, they were frustrated by the lack of decent, fun clothing for boys, free from ubiquitous logos and cartoon characters. They set about curating their own unique and easy-to wear collection for boys and launched Five Boys Clothing in July 2014.

The styles range from cool to classic, appealing to sons and mothers alike, with easy fits – so boys can be boys! Their boys are now three through to 12 but they cater for boys as old as 15 as they felt that the UK high street really fails when it comes to that difficult to dress ‘tween’ age.
