10 Homeware Bargain In The Sales

There is nothing more I like doing more than tweaking the interiors of my home, whether it is decluttering (a firm favourite), rearranging a little corner or adding a bit of colour.  I have been scouring the world wide web for items that enhance my home without breaking the bank. Although a lot of the good stuff from the summer sales have gone, there is still a lot of good stuff around – especially in the Home & Interiors sections!

La Redoute : Rice Storage Basket £47.20

Whether you need wood for a fire or storage for errant toys, this is smart and sturdy.

2306f8350abee9bc43f58fab4e96a2a1

Amara : Vinyl Floor Mat £53.90

I first came across these vinyl floor mats in a holiday cottage andI immediately fell in love. They are great to catch the crumbs under the kitchen table or to stop coffee slopping on the carpet under a coffee table.

Anthropologie : Pathfinder Rug £36.95

As a fan of all things bohemian (other than tie dye!) I think this rug is beautiful and it is heavily reduced so now about the same price as you would find in a foreign souk.

7531557520001_000_b

Zara : Methacrylate Placemat £9

Nothing like a bit of blue and white to freshen an area up and these methacrylate (like melamine) will do the job.

Marks and Spencer : Set of 4 Duck Egg Tea Towels  £12

I do like matching tea towels and this is a great way to smarten up your kitchen, By having two out at a time, there are always spares.

pl_05_t34_1007b_em_x_ec_0

Marks & Spencer : Floor Lamp £94

I don’t know much about how to light a room other than if you mix levels and types of lighting it creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. This floor lamp tucked away in a corner behind a chair or sofa would change the dynamics of a room.

pl_05_t80_1058g_t0_x_ec_0

Zara : Multicoloured Cotton Blanket £15.99

This would instantly bring colour to a gloomy bedroom and would also look great at a picnic.

9266004999_2_4_1

Zara : Elephant Rug £9.99

This is very sweet for a nursery and it’s reduced too.

1950029999_1_1_1

House of Fraser : Weekday Bowl Set £45

Not sure this would be great if you had more than one kid, but fun nonetheless and would look great on the wall too.

Bundle Beds : Banish Your Camping Woes

It is so exciting to introduce the founders of Bundle Beds. A friend recommended I visit their stand at Spirit of Summer, so off I went and was greeted by a very friendly James who told me the concept of Bundle Beds. The striking design and easy to store concept was what I was really impressed with, however I was eager to know more about these two young entrepreneurs…

What is a Bundle Bed?

A Bundle Bed is a self-contained, fully-bundled bed, complete with a slim, but deceptively-comfortable self-inflating mattress, built in luxury duvet and pillow with ultra cosy sheets to provide comfort, warmth and a great night’s sleep.

This is my bed awaiting its debut use on Saturday night…

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfbvTzOvJsE[/embedyt]

It was so easy to use (and even easier to wash after the kids played in after a wet night!)

img_5684

Please introduce yourselves…

We are the founders of Bundle Beds, James Clark (32) and Lucy Bartlett (31), also known as the ‘Chief Bundlers’. We met at a dinner party in 2013 through Lucy’s husband, Ben (James and Ben were great friends at school), and shortly after decided to set up Bundle Beds. We now run the business together, and at the moment run it as a 24 hour business as James is based in London.

james

Lucy is based in Brunei (although heads back to the UK for events for the Summer and festive seasons).

lucy

Why did you start Bundle Beds?

We love travelling, love camping, love adventures and most of all love being surrounded by family and friends… We wanted to change the fact that the only solution for sleepovers, camping and adventures was to take a mass of bulky or uncomfortable sleeping equipment which never delivered a good night’s sleep.

parents-and-child-camping

Whether it’s sleeping over, camping out, ‘putting up’ guests, festival fun or overnight adventures, we created Bundle Beds to provide the ultimate sleeping alternative to a conventional bed – a roll out bed that is easy to carry, simple to use and provides a great night’s sleep.

img_3288

Who are Bundle Beds idea for?

Bundle Beds are ideal for all ages. The Bundle Bed is the ultimate solution for anyone who intends on sleeping over, from kids going on sleepovers, to festival goers or someone who just needs an extra bed to house guests. Bundle Beds are the first choice option when no beds are available and in fact, some of our customers now prefer a Bundle Bed to their own bed!

Well, it has certainly revolutionised my camping life!

Lucy’s favourites :

Restaurant – The Shed, Notting Hill

Hotel – Mesa Stila in Central Java

Campsite – Middle Ninfa

Holiday destination – I’ve been super lucky in the last few years to be able to travel to lots of amazing places in Asia from Brunei (where I live). I can’t choose, so top three are Sri Lanka, Nusa Lembongan and Pamilican Island, just off Bohol.

Parenting tip

Give yourself a break and don’t ever expect to get the perfect work, life balance. Unless you are superhuman, that’s not going to happen, so just work it out as you go along!

TLM Monthly Edit

TLM Monthly Edit : July 2017

3 days in to the holidays and summer feels over. Fret not though, August looks set to be shinier than the latter half of July AND there are some fab sales at the moment. (Like you have time to peruse… but hey, if you do!)

I have discovered a fantastic new website, Love The Sales.  It basically takes all the sale items from most high street shops like Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Oka, House of Fraser and online websites (oxymoron yes, but trying to be clear!)  like Asos, Gap and Isabel Marant to name a few – and puts them all in one place.

As a mega fan of converse trainers and proud owner of my silver star ones, I am seriously contemplating buying another pair in advance  of them ever failing me.

fullsizerender-113

Also includes Home, Outdoor and kids. Look at the bargains to be had on branded swimming floats!

Next up on my July hit list are a couple of weekend away ideas close to London (without the kids). The Horse Guards Inn near Petworth, West Sussex looks very cosy.

img_2183

Black Pig Retreats near Shaftsbury in Dorset is a picturesque glamping site with ready made Safari Tents. Perfect for some quiet time or to get the kids out of the big smoke for a couple of days.

We all want to save a few pennies and Switchcraft can do it for you.

It’s an automated, free, energy switching website. Sign up with them for free (takes 2 minutes) and they keep you on the best deal, switching you when a better deal becomes available.

Started by Andrew and his wife who live in Barnes with their two pre-schoolers – it has gone from strength to strength and has enabled many families to save much needed pennies. The friend who introduced me to Switchcraft signed up in May & have already saved £500+.

If you are looking for a fun, time consuming (i.e. drag it out) craft activity try out Shrinkles. You may remember when you were little putting crisp packets in the oven (supervised of course) and they would shrink and harden – well now there is a way todo this properly. Cut out, colour in your Shrinkle, then whack it in the oven and out comes a little key ring or toy for them to play with that they have made!

New Kids on The Block!

Summerdown Mint is a farm in the Hampshire Downs that sell all things Peppermint. I particularly love their Black Mitcham Mint Body,Bath & Home Range. It is so fresh. They offer gift wrapping so a perfect present for someone who has just loved house.

Voted one of the top 13 Rose’s by The Independent and Waitrose, Make Me Blush not only looks swell it tastes great. By cutting out the middle man and having it delivered straight to your door from Italy, it is also significantly cheaper that it would be in shops.

Edward Bulmer is a pioneering creator of perfect colours using truly natural paint. Drawing on years of experience as an interior designer, (being a Daddy!) and inspired by nature, he has now created twelve beautiful new colours for children. The Nursery Collection is fun yet classic and adaptable enough to last throughout childhood.

12 Tips For a Smooth Transition into the School Holidays

Whether the holidays have started or about to commence, the transition is harder for us than the children. Whilst excitement may be running high before they break up, after a few lazy mornings and a bit of spontaneous fun, once the novelty wears off and the reality of it being like this for the next 6-8 weeks – we could all do with a bit of advice for a smooth transition.

Livvy Gormally is a Children’s Behaviour Expert and Parent Coach, mum of 3 and the founder of Let’s Ask Livvy.  She offers personalised and child specific advice, skills and support to enabling parents to cope with their everyday parenting challenges.  From tantrums to fussy eating, separation anxiety to anger management, Livvy has over 20 years experience as a behaviour specialist.

livvy-gormally-2

1. Going from term time to holiday time can be tricky- tired school weary kids are not as tolerant, may be quicker to get moody or squabble.  So bear this in mind when planning activities for the first few days.

2. Also be kind to yourselves-tired life weary parents are also not as tolerant, may be quicker to get moody or squabble. So bear this in mind too when planning activities for the first few days.

3. Be realistic with your expectations- if your kids find it hard to play together after school, then it is unrealistic to expect them to play harmoniously all day during the holidays. Different aged kids access toys, games and free time in different ways so try to plan activities which are appropriate to their ages, interests and abilities to keep things running smoothly.

4. During holiday times some parents say they feel a pressure to fill the days with adventure-but this is often not what their kids want or need- sometimes kids just need to chill- so enjoy the odd pyjama day, say no to some activities or play dates and make sure your kids have time to rest and regenerate- rested kids are happier kids.

5. Always be mindful of what makes your family tick- as a mum of 3, 2 of whom are like energiser bunnies, they find chilling very hard and actually relax more when they have had a burst of activity- finding the balance for your kids is key.

livvy-gormally

6. When the holidays start the kids don’t always realise that “holidays” don’t really exist for parents- the expectation to stop everything versus the pressure of mounting jobs can be huge on parents, we all try to be master jugglers but try to be realistic with your time, the jobs that can’t wait, what you can fit into the day and the expectations of the whole family.

7. For many of us, the holidays means freedom and lack of time pressures, but switching from term time routines to holiday routine can be a challenge. Knowing what makes your family tick is important, if your family works better with routine the holidays will work better with a bit more structure.  If your kids get “hangry” and need regular food to avoid mood swings, then your days will be easier if you keep to regular mealtimes.

livvy-gormally-3

8. Play to the strengths of your family- If your kids don’t function well when tired, accumulated late nights will have a negative effect on the whole family.  This is not to say you can’t enjoy cinema night, or some meals out on holiday, it just means you have to be prepared and know that a siesta or and early night might be needed the next day to get everyone back on track.

9. Holidays tend to be more relaxed but try to avoid shifting boundaries.  I recommend setting some clear holidays guidelines at the beginning of the holidays.  Guidelines are most effective when they reflect your core values- this way it shouldn’t matter where you are or what you are doing- the things that are important to you as a family travel with you.  For many of us extra treats, saying yes to things that would usually be a no, are what makes holidays fun- but they can also have a considerable impact on behaviour.  If your reason for saying no to ice-cream on a normal day is because too much ice-cream has a negative effect on behaviour- you are not being mean if you say no when on holiday.  Saying yes and veering too far from what makes your family tick may bring short term happiness, but remember the long game!

10. Whether it’s a trip abroad or a weekend with friends’ travel can be hugely stressful for parents and kids.  Again, keep an eye on your expectations.  If your kids argue on the school run it would be unrealistic to think that they can play happily in the car for hours on end or in the confined space of a plane.  Think about where they sit, if you have the room to space them out a little a few inches can make all the difference!  Try to be prepared, car games can be fun but often need adult involvement to keep them fun and fluid and often to mediate. If your kids are competitive remember that competitive games need more refereeing.  Think about the timings of travel and how this might impact the kids and remember that even the best laid travel plans can go wrong so be prepared with extra snacks and activities and use technology if that works for you.

livvy-gormally-4

11. If you want to limit screen time, limit it to the times when you need the kids to have it- such as the end of a journey when everyone is tired and bored, you’re a tiny bit lost, and you can’t face game number 200 of eye-spy.  Toddler Fun Learning has created a great app for younger kids, it has fun educational content and the bonus feature of a timer function that allows you to set how much screen time you want the kids to have.  The timer goes off, the app sings a goodbye song and screen time finishes- very handy for reducing the all too common “just one more minute” debates.

home-ipad-landscape

12. Rewards and praising the positives-don’t assume that holidays are fun for all kids.  Some children find it really challenging to occupy their time without direction or adult support.  Some kids need to learn how to play and occupy themselves.  So make sure to have realistic age appropriate expectations and to praise them when they are playing nicely or occupying their time positively.

13. Be careful of the “no/don’t” cycle.  Try to praise and give attention to the behaviours you want to see more of and think about how your praise is delivered.  For example – if rewarding nice playing- “well done for playing nicely” will encourage more positive behaviour change and delivers a more positive message than “well done for not fighting.”  Of “if you play nicely now you can watch a little TV later” delivers a more positive message and elicits more positive behaviour change than “if you don’t fight for 10 mins you can watch a little TV”.

Sounds simple enough – let’s see if we can remember this in the heat of the moment! Happy holidays all xx

Holiday Style : Let’s Kit The Boys Out

Thank goodness the selection of boys clothes in the shops has grown over the last few years. It used to be pretty basic but now if you know where to look the boys can give the girls a run for their money in the cuteness and originality stakes. There also more individual and dedicated websites just for the boys (more on that soon!)

However, I am pretty trad in how I dress the boys so high street shopping works for me.  There is a lot of blue. A lot of stripes. Nothing too way out. So if this is a little safe for you, I won’t be offended if you quietly move on. If you are in the running for some timeless basics, stick with me and let’s head to trusty M and S.

Younger boys : 0-5

Riptape Trainers from £16

Seeing as below the age of 10 they race through their shoes at  very high speed, best to go cheap and cheerful. These are very sweet too.

Riptape Young Boys Trainers

Dino Top from £5

Love the two tone endnote too overtly appliqué.

Young Boys Dino Long Sleeve T Shirt

Blue Cotton Star Print Top from £5

Same look as above but it wouldn’t be a TLM post without a star or two in it!

Boys Long Sleeve Star Top

Dude Long Sleeve Top from £5

I don’t love the motif on this but I do love the slightly different green if you are eating something a bit different to ‘safe’ blue.

Dude Long Sleeve Top

Textured Jumper from £12

I love how M and S have focussed on this subtle texture. It keeps the clothes simple enough but adds little bit of much needed detail on kids clothes.

Textured Boys Jumper

Pure Cotton Striped Jumper £12

This only goes up to 1 yr. Wish it went older.

Baby Blue & White Stripe Jumper

Older boys : 3-16

Driving Shoes : Grey from £26

Alot of the more popular coloured boys driving shoes have sold out but this practical grey which would go with everything is still in every size.

Boys Grey Suede Driving Shoes

‘Clogs’ from £9

Who would know these weren’t.. umm.. cough.. the original ones. I wouldn’t.

Boys Beach Shoes

Printed Swim Shorts from £10

These are really fun and I am a massive fan of slightly longer looking board shorts than shorter trunks that can look a bit ‘Copacabana beach’ in them if you get what I mean.

Electric Blue Boys Swimming Trunks

Dark Blue Swimmers from £10

These are really smart and would love them in a mens sizes.

Dark Blue Boys Swimmers

Striped Rash Vest from £8

Fresh and easily spotted from the other side of the swimming pool.

Striped Rash Vest

Footy PJs from £19

There is no avoiding the football obsession (lucky if you are) and a good way to avoid them wanting team pjs is to put these across their path.

Football PJ's

Checked Shirt from £12

Roll the sleeves up, unbutton a couple of the top buttons, which on some shorts and a great al fresco look.

Boys Check Shirt

Cotton Trunks from £8

Why are these called trunks? Anyway, there comes a time in every boys life when the briefs have to go and these have to enter. I would say from age 4 at the LATEST.

Cotton Pants

Green Colour Block Sunglasses £6

A bit of fun. Until they lose them!

Green Sunglasses

Hope this has helped and will emerald you to fill in any holiday clothing gaps for your little chap.

Holiday Style : Show Stopping Girls Dresses

One item I never have to actively look for are girls clothes – dresses to be precise. It is possibly one of the most popular start ups ideas that I come across and I can see why. It is easy to buy a dress online for your little one as if you like it, choose the size and it will more often than not fit – unlike mumma who has to contend with length, erratic sizing and indecision! Anyway, despite the ease of us all being able to walk into the local supermarket for milk and leave with a pretty summer dress for the pint size funster, I thought I would nonetheless give a shout to some new businesses and some slightly more established ones. One thing they all have in common is how to design a very sweet little girls dress!

Outside The Lines : Anya Pom Pom Dress £30

I first came across Outside The Lines with this sleeveless collared smock dress. Take a look. Some lovely fresh items

pompom-dress-frontv1

Juniper Berry White & Neon Pink Dress £35

I first found this new brand last week at a local fair. The neon accents are insanely eye catching and I have a feeling she has cornered a market with these eye catching numbers.

juniperberrykids_whitecotton_neonpink3-2

Marks and Spencer Pale Pink Hem Dress £20

I love this dusty pink dress with a slight empire line. So girly.

sd_04_t77_4730s_a0_x_ec_90

Coco Belle : Sleeveless Dress £37 (1yr old)

Sophie who started Coco Belle a couple of years selling at house sales is now online. With a wonderful selection of traditional smock dresses she also has very pretty sleeveless dresses in beautiful Liberty Prints.

Bumble & Ava : Blue Poppy Pinafore £35

All the Bumble and Ava dresses are so simple and encompass a beautiful summers day in their designs.  Here we are on holiday in ours…

poppy_pinafore_blue_1_1024x1024

Ellie’s Heirlooms : Antique Linen Day Dress £45

This beautifully handmade dress from antique linen is so lovingly made it will last a lifetime. Notice the french lace collar. It is adorable. (Have used this dress as main shot…)

Millie Manu : Rara Dress £59

Millie Manu knows how to make a summer dress. From subtle bows to little ruffles, there is something for everyone from this Made in UK brand.

blue_reef_rara_dress_retouched

Alice a Paris : Violet Floral Dress Now £28

White and Pale Pink flowers is one of my favourite colour combinations so I am very tempted by this little dress from relatively new comer Alice a Paris.

17s78_ss17-fl-94-108-100_d2

Mini Maharajas : Paloma Dress £45

So bright and vivid – the hard thing is to chose which colour from this gorgeous brand that uses hand block prints from India. dsc_0008_1024x1024

We Are  All : Alexis Silk Dress $79

After doing a Spotlight on this Australian brand that have hit our shores, I have always had my eye on this for a striking summer dress.

36

Trotters : Lily Embroidered Sun Dress Now £35

Such a diddi neckline from old favourites Trotters. This is in the sale too.

s7ds_lily_su3_1

Sunuva White Boho Dress £45

No words. You have pulled it out the bag again. Neon. Tassels. YES!

Marks and Spencer : Green Tea Dress £20

These sleeves are very on trendddd dare I say it about and the mint green colour and ruffled sleeves make it a summer winner (and very reasonable too).

sd_04_t77_3210n_jb_x_ec_90

Little Leggies : Denim Pink Pom Pom Dress £35

As loyal fans of everything Little Leggies do (cannot wait for their new collection and website coming very soon) this denim and pink pom pom dress sums them up. Simple and epic.

005littleleggiesjunedarkened

My Twirl : Bespoke Dress

As a massive fan of My Twirl dresses already, I was delighted t hear that you can now design your own fabric. The idea is that you choose your little ones favourite artwork (or the one that work best on a dress) and they print it for you!

If you really want to go to town and have a special do, grab a bespoke Clea Broad headband. CUTE! This was mine on her way to a Christening.

Holiday Style : Summer Dresses You Can Actually Wear

There has been quite a lot of chat at the school gates, that some of our trusty high street shops have become a bit ‘young’. Either that or we are getting old! However I imagine you all agree that there are a few eye catching numbers out there but when you go closely you see there is an unnecessary twist to it – i.e. it’s cropped, the shoulders are cut out, it is far too short or there is a ruffle on it so huge you would be mistaken for a sail. So I have done some perusing through the sales and the pre fall collections, as I am in the market for some wearable, decent, well cut and well priced summer dresses. Here is my short list!

Yumi Flamingo Tea Dress £35

I love this eye catching blue and with flamingos all over it makes it even better!

i_5052011144247_51_20160112

I love how loose this is. Nothing worse than tight under the arms = sweat patches!

I am wearing my yellow dress from Marks and Sparks and it seems to have gone done well, other than people wondering why I am wearing a dress ‘You must be off somewhere?’ No, it is nice and cool! This one is even looser. Pretty. Love a bit of canary yellow!

Marks and Spencer Cotton Sleeve Tunic £35

As long as your boobs arent too big this would skim over all the lumps and bumps and keep you cool at the same time whilst also making a statement.

Marks and Spencer Tie Back Navy Midi Dress £45

Makes me feel a bit hot looking at this, however as it usually cools down in August (why is that??)  this is a good transitional piece to invest in for early Autumn.

Topshop Tall Ditsy Tea Dress £29.99

Topshop is doing well at Tea Dresses this season – the only problem is arm the normal sizes are already sold out. However, head off the beaten track and check out their ‘tall ‘ section and you will be pleasantly surprised and will also mean the dresses aren’t too short! That’s my plan anyway…

I have ventured into stores ‘pre fall collection’ and picked out the goodies. I think I am being swayed by the Yumi dresses at the top, purely for the price point! What about you? Don’t forget, if you need some summer accessories – TLM Edit is bursting with bright and wonderful jewellery. Have a lovely day xx
