St Pancras : A New Shopping Destination

On Thursday I felt like Tom Hanks in The Terminal. Except I was at St Pancras International all day by choice. In fact, I had planned to spend a couple of hours there but after I visited every shop, stopped for a couple of beauty treatment and had a coffee in one of the many cafes, 5 hours had elapsed and I was actually late for the kids!!

St Pancras International is not only an international train station, it is now a shopping & eating destination.  The beauty of St Pancras is it is beautiful too. No stark lights like popular shopping centres so I didn’t get the fuzzy head that I usually get if I stay too long inside one.

img_0795

The natural light that pours through the roof makes it a destination for design students and tourists who want to take some lovely London photos too.  The architecture really is incredible.  Read here for the history of St Pancras.

img_0796

The concourse of shops is orderly and neat with large glass windows so you can peer in before you enter.

St Pancras

Each shop was beautifully laid out, not very busy and I noticed how attentive the staff were.

The added bonus is that opening hours go beyond the normal high street to cater for time poor travellers, eaters and shoppers.

St Pancras kindly gave me a £100 Gift Card to buy Mothers Day presents.

Gift Card

There was no shortage of ideas!

Jo Malone

If you know what scent you like (I like Peony & Blush) anything from Jo Malone would make a lovely gift – the packaging alone conjures up excitement.

I loved trying the limited edition scents that have just been launched. My favourite from this range, English Garden, was Poppy & Barley. It is scrummy!

img_0789

I also had a cheeky hand massage (which was free!) You can book online. A lovely treat for you and your mum!

Jo Malone

Neals Yard

I really enjoyed perusing the shelves of Neals Yard (a treat in itself to go deeper than a quick glance through the window when the kids are in tow).

I was particularly taken by their teas and supplements (and want to try the Organic Beauty Oil which you add to your breakfast, smoothie or dressings!)

Natural Health

I personally would love some intensive body cream tottery and get my flesh ready for Spring. The lovely lady who works in the shop recommended Geranium & Orange Body Balm!

Geranium & Orange Body Balm

Cath Kidson

If you love bright and a bit of floral, Cath Kidson is a lovely place to gander.

Cath Kidson

I love the new London Toile Print.  Good to see a London scene without the obligatory red (bus) and black (taxi) in it!

London Toile

Fortnum & Mason

What a treat to have a peak in Fortnum & Mason. What struck me was ho reasonable the prices were. A box of biscuits in a nice tin only (ok not your average digestives) was £12. A lovely present for the right motherland who can beat a receiving a Fortnums bag!

Fortnums

John Lewis

A more reasonable alternative was down at John Lewis who’s whole shop seemed geared towards gifts. These Whittards tins of teas are pretty – it makes meant to buy the whole range of candy coloured ones.

Tea

As you know I am a sucker for anything pink and love the packaging on this Georgian tea caddy!

Earl Grey

Marks & Spencer

No shopping destination is complete without a trusty Marks. Whilst I have my eye on these yellow slim waisted trousers  there is no denying that Marks is the place to grab a good quality stylish bunch of flowers on the run!

Frill Pocket

Oliver Bonas

Oliver Bonas is basically a homeware and gift shop so you will find something in there. I have my eye on these small gold printed rugs. Perfect for jazzing up a small corner of a room.

Rugs

Their selection of cards were pretty hilarious too – this one ticked me in particular!

Mum card

Have a look to see all the Shops at St Pancras International. Here is a shot of a selection!

Shops at St Pancras

What a fun day.  I will definitely be allowing extra time if I am lucky enough to be passing through again, or perhaps I might make a special trip there again. Who is with me? xx

Mother’s Day Gift Edit

How can January drag on forever and February be over before I could say ‘another celebration’. This month (Sunday 11th March) is Mothers Day. I actually think this is a ploy to cause more stress to husbands who have only just got over Valentine’s day and now they have to buy something on behalf of the kids (if the kids are under 10!)

Handpicked by Kate works directly with a collection of boutique, high quality and unique brands to bring you a range of exquisite homeware pieces and beautiful gifts. Kate’s desire is to provide an extra platform for these superb brands which have caught her eye along the way. (A girl after my own heart – this is my mission for TLM Edit!)

Kate

Below is a gorgeous selection of possibilities that Kate has compiled (and I added a few things that I really liked – there was so much choice on her website!)

So have a peruse, take your pick and press forward!

If they understandably aren’t so willing give them a break and buy something for your own mother or a special mother figure in your own life.

Thank you Kate – take it away…

How To Make Duvet Days Easy & Enjoyable

With 3 sick children over the last few weeks, half term and this Beast from the East that has shut school for two days, I would have usually lost the plot.  There is only so much homework, tidying, playing and cooking you can do with them before some form of screen has to be switched on.

When I was asked by the team at Now TV if I wanted to review the Now TV Box and Kids pass – As a slight technophobe (yes I know I am seem quite savvy, but the back technical end has never been my forte and the thought of actually setting up something myself – well no!) I was apprehensive but I decided to go for it!

Now Box

The USP of NOW TV compared to its competitors is it has NO CONTRACT and even a monkey (me) can set it up.

img_0004-2

Here is how to do it…

  1. Buy a NOW TV box (a basic one is £14.99) and a box and 3 month Kids pass is £19.99, then £2.99 per month! Bargain!
  2. Set up an account with NOW TV (do this before you plug your box in otherwise it is very disappointing as you plug it in then have to enter your account details and if you don’t have them there are moans all round!)
  3. Plug in the Now TV Box to the wall and the cable to the back of the TV
  4. If your internet is dodgy you can use an ethernet cable from the box to your TV
  5. Turn the box on, go to the HDMI channel you have plugged your box into
  6. Point the NOW remote at the TV and go to home

HEY PRESTO – YOU ARE IN!

The kids have watched Batman Lego Movie, Up, Boss Baby, Honey I Shrunk The Kids to name but a few.  That’s on top of these fab shows.

Kids Shows

I cannot wait to have a night in to myself to watch some absolute classics (like catching up on TOWIE and Real Housewives) and these Oscar nominated films. A film pass is only £9.99 and they do epic bundles of kids, sport, entertainment and films too.

Oscars

I really want to watch SJP’s Divorce and only £7.99 for a months entertainment pass, I think that is value for money!!

SJP

By the way, once you have an account, you can watch Now TV on your phone, tablet and computer… those car journeys will now be a breeze!

Sign up to NOW TV  and get a 14 day free trial of their kids pass.  I am so pleased I have discovered it and actually worked out how to use it. If I can, you can!!!

10 World Book Day Ideas To Save Time & Money

With three kids who are all involved in World Book Day this year, there is no skirting around the subject and fobbing them off in something that I thought about at 7.05 that morning (i.e. like the last 4 years).  There needs to be a bit of preparation.

KEEP CALM

I watch in awe as children arrive at school on the Thursday (it’s always in a Thursday yeah?) in handmade costumes and just hope that my kids don’t start comparing their (my!) nominal efforts to their friends ones.

(They don’t, they are just delighted to not be in uniform)

What’s the problem then?

It’s the MOTHERS whose judgement I fear!

I don’t want to feel inadequate, this year I want to be known as one of those mothers, who do think, stitch, create and make.

But as I cant stitch – I have to think outside the box and thinking is one thing I can do!

This year, I am giving myself 4 days to concur up something that looks like I haven’t done any work the whole week, other than for Thursday, but really, I have just thought for 5 minutes and brain stormed with the little ones so we are all happy.

There will be no sewing machine out and no £12 last minute costume from Amazon.

I am going to share my ideas which each have a twist

Animal Lover

Rather than go the predictable route of a favourite like The Lion King (brown face paint and whiskers and voila – you can be pretty much any animal!), I want to introduce you to the Tall Grass books written by the lovely Clare Luther.

Each book is based on one animal’s journey, each with a different message.

The Friends Who Care

Go top to toe in grey clothes, with a cushion under your tummy.

(When I say you, I actually mean them – although I did go to go to World Book Day drop off and pick up dressed as Paddington Bear one year!)

The Friends Who Care

Happy To Be Me

A gorgeous story with a lovely message encouraging children to be content with who they are and what they have got. These books should be on the National Curriculum!

Wear yellow and stick large brown spots on with masking tape.

Happy To Be Me

Mr Men Fans

We owe Roger Hargreaves a huge thank you. Hi characters are very easy to replicate.

My oldest is doing Mr Bump this year

A bit of face paint, colour block dressing and loo paper and hey presto you are a Mr Bump.

Mr Bump

Little Miss Sunshine

One for the little ladies.

Head to toe yellow, freckles, bunches and red bows. Sweet!!

little miss sunshine

Princess worshippers

If your daughter wants to go as Frozen, I mean Elsa (do you find yourself calling her Frozen too?) but you simply can’t allow her to go as a character that came about first in a movie (oh the shame in front of the mothers #jokenotjoke) here is a good idea.

Angelina Ballerina is a respectable bet.

Pink leotard and tutu. Pink Bow. Add whiskers.

Angelina Ballerina

I am trying to push her towards Little Red Riding Hood as she has dark hair (and we don’t have a pink tutu)

Red towel and a little basket = immediately look like Little Red Riding Hood.

Little red riding hood

‘Footballer’ Wannabe

My second son wants to go as a footballer from his ‘When I am group, I want to play for Arsenal‘ book (You can buy any team and they are really encouraging books)

Arsenal

I am rolling with it this year. ‘Let go’ I chant to myself, it is a book.

And it’s not a competition!

A few other ideas for football fanatics… (all great books that I recommend)

Froggy Plays Football

Football Kit + Green Facepaint.

Froggy Plays Football

Kicking a Ball

Just had to include this wonderful book. Buy if you have a football lover ‘who only wants to kick a ball… ‘

Dress in any football kit!

Kicking a ball

For Those Who Hate Dressing Up!

Super Star Kids

If your child isn’t one for dressing up, whack them in their home clothes and tell them they are a superstar, Gavin Rhodes has written a series of rhyming moral fun books and they are wonderful!!

I highly recommend them.

Rhyming Moral Fun

Roald Dahl has created some wonderful characters that are very easy to recreate at home without putting your kid into a full blown costume .

Matilda

Blue dress, red ribbon and a couple of books under her arm. (although maybe the red bow was just for the stage – even easier!)

Matilda

George’s Marvellous Medicine

Red T Shirt, saucepan and a bottle of shampoo!

George's Marvellous Medicine

And if you still can’t think all the major supermarkets have incredible ranges to pick from…

Also, if the actual purpose behind World Book Day is lost on you, head to the official website for a read!

There are also lots of WBD events happening around the country – take a look and if your little one is full of beans after school – you can head down there to continue the magic!

Hope this has helped and reminded you that it doesn’t have to give you a headache!

Have a great week (and can’t wait to see your efforts!) xx

Big Fashion

Colour Pop Sneakers and The New Style Socks

I’m calling time on the cold and defying the weather by putting away my winter footwear and bringing out my trainers once again. Have had a break from them as it’s been too cold to bare my ankles, but am overcoming this superficial problem by alternative between pop socks (not very sexy but my staple) and if the temperature stays the same (cold) it’s time to grab the ‘fun sock’ trend and put them on display.  There are so many about!

Here is some inspiration that I have taken from Pinterest.

Rainbow stripes are always going to lift your mood!

Socks

Topshop Rainbow Socks £3.50

Rainbow

The next big thing are sock tights. Don’t say I didn’t tell you!

Tight socks

Jazz Ankle Socks £6

Jazz

I also love these to keep your tootsies warm.

Topshop Embroidered Star Sporty Socks £4

Green Star

ASOS Pink Glitter Flame Sock £3.50

Unicorn

So, thats your socks sorted, lets move on to the bread and butter.

Anthropologie Treton Carry 11 Trainers £88

I am often envious of my kids velcro trainers – they are so neat and there is no faffing with laces.  (Although silicon laces are a game changer if you are still a lace up kind of person!)

Pink Trainers

Rose Rankin Corney Low Top Velvet Lip £80

Designed by Rose in London and made in Portugal, her sneakers are all lust worthy. These velvet ones are not only gorgeous but an amazing price for a smallish brand that is stocked in Selfridges.

Velvet lips

Saucony Vintage Trainers £75

I hadn’t heard of this brand but when I was doing my research on ASOS, the colours, style and price jumped out of me. Purple is one of the biggest colours this year and this gives a little nod in the right direction.

saucy

New Balance Shoes 373 £37

If you want full on purple, my favourite brand (yes I said it – they are, officially my favourite trainer brand) New Balance once again get it right with these purple and white 373 with a slick of turquoise.

Purple New Balance

B4 Ballerinas Leopard Print and Red Trainers £148

These gorgeous trainers that are made and PERSONALISED in Italy are mega. You should also see the raffia yellow ones too.  Not strictly wipe clean as they are made of horse hair – but too good not to include!

Leopard

ASOS Didi Strap Trainers £22

Leopard

Air and Grace Copeland Neon Trainers £149

In an ideal world I, these Rainbow Leopard Print in collab with Dress Like a Mum would be top of my list, but they are sold out so these neon colour pop trainers come a very close second. If you want to veer away from pin, they also come in Neon Yellow.

Copelands

Hush Majestic Star Trainers £179

I won’t ever get move on from stars. Some say they are 2017 – I say they are now a classic.

Silver Star

Boden Hollie Trainers £75

Avoid looking like Mr Tumble’s spotty bag by keeping other colours in your outfit to a minimum. These are original and with a skirt would look ace.

Boden Spots

Veja Neon Magenta Leather Trainers £105

Veja coming up trumps again with glitter blue and pink combination.

Veja

Dune Edris White £60

Trying to find turquoise trainers is hard but these appliqué star sneakers from Dune are pretty and feminine and will sate my turquoise love for the moment.

Dune Edris White

Hope this has been helpful and give you a little hope that the end is in sight!

Have a lovely weekend

How To Make The Most of a Night Away

Pink ticket, blue ticket – whatever type of ticket it is called – being ‘allowed’ a night away, without the kids, for no reason in particular other than for desperate need to speak to each other during the daylight uninterrupted (I don’t know about you but i’m knackered in the evening and I turn in to an incommunicative zombie – much to my husbands delight) is a MEGA treat.

London, country, gastropub, airbnb, room above pub, country hotel, boutique hotel or even stay at home (and kids go to Granny and Grandpa’s)….

How Do You Choose?

With the amount of choice nowadays, it is hard to decide what you fancy – as we don’t have time to think about anything other getting through the next set of jobs – how are we meant to make a sensible informed deciton about out own needs? (Please read tongue in cheek – I am not quite that desperate!)

All I knew is that I wanted to chill and not rush around like a deranged chicken trying to tick off as many sights and shops as I possibly could – just because I wasn’t with a box of frogs aka kids.

We needed to relax, read the papers, catch up on all the Style magazines my mother saves for me, watch something other than Officially Amazing Goes Bonkers (ok, it is pretty good – a firm family favourite but not every time we turn the TV on) and to sleep.

LOTS

With only 1 night…

  • You don’t want to spend hours in the car
  • You want it to be quiet
  • You don’t need loads of facilities as you are knackered
  • You need it it be spacious as you aren’t going to move from it
  • You need it to be comfortable for the above reason
  • There needs to be good food (obviously!)

So, we came to the very sensible conclusion of  The Stafford

A quintessential old English hotel in the heart of Mayfair.

The Stafford

It ticked all of those boxes and one of the most impressive aspects was the service. Wow, nothing was too much trouble, every whim was waited on (not because this was a review – oh no I wish!) and all the staff were very humble, polite and charming.

Reception

We checked in, did a circuit of the hotel – didn’t take long as it isn’t vast and then headed to our room.

The ambience was cosy without being too chintzy.

Suite

It felt rather Italien actually – must have been the marble bathrooms.

Bathroom

As there isn’t a spa, I booked in a massage with Blow  Whether you want a treatment, nails done, hair blow dried they can come to your hotel room and do it there and then.

My 60 minute deep tissue massage (and it was deep!) was £60 which is much less than usual London prices.

Then for some champagne and a trip to The American Bar. I had been here before but never realised that it was attached to The Stafford.

Possibly one of my favourite bars in London. Off the beaten track, discreet, cosy and awesome decorations.

American Bar

After the friendly bar men ploughed us with Expresso Martini’s (leftover from orders – for some reason he liked us!) we headed to the acclaimed The Game Bird for supper.

I have heard great things about this restaurant from one of my ‘foodies’ friends, so I was expecting good things.

It didn’t disappoint. In fact, nothing was a miss.

The philosophy at The Game Bird is simple – dedicated to following the seasons and supporting local artisans including award-winning family owned farms, we have created a ‘theatre of the senses’ menu based on uncomplicated excellence: local, seasonal produce sits alongside time honoured British classic.

The Game Bird

After sleeping for 11 hours, yes 11 hours, we rolled down to breakfast that we now considered brunch and it was WOW!

Breakfast

I won’t wax lyrical about the food as 1) it’s piggy and 2) I am not a restaurant critic but if I heard anyone criticise it, it would put me off them, not the restaurant!

Anyway, I highly recommend you hop foot it there, even if it is just for afternoon tea or a drink at the American Bar.

Ideal For

  • Central cosy one stop shop night away
  • Take international friends for a quintessential afternoon tea
  • A sociable family dinner at The Game Bird
  • Warm up drinks with friends at The American Bar

Mini Epic : Take The Chore & Bore Out of Party Invitations

Have you noticed how each class or school send children’s party invitations? There are three different groups. Some flick the date out on whatssapp (my worst – umm hello, I have lost the date before I can say ‘another whatssapp group’), loads use an online tracking service – sorry, I do love my kids and their friends and the convenience of having it all in one spot, but I won’t be paying for a coin for each invitation thank you very much. The majority of parents, send a paper invitation home in the book bag. Yes, this is lovely for the kids and if I was more organised I would put it in my inbox and reply straight away – however often not….

None ideal.

So, when I discovered husband and wife duo (a professional animator and a media producer) who had created Mini Epic as an alternative  way of sending kids party invitations – I was very excited!

mini-epic_logo_red

As parents of two young girls, they know the importance of getting invitations done as quickly as possible but also wanted something a little more entertaining than paper or a static image.

Party invitations rarely capture the excitement of what’s to come on the big day, so we wanted to create a new kind of invitation that’s entertaining, functional and makes the whole process of sending and managing invitations easier.

Mini-Epic is a fun and fast way to send online animated party invitations for kids’ parties.

  • You simply pick an animated template
  • Add your party details
  • Upload a photo and within 60 seconds your personalised invitation is ready to view.
  • Then you can send it by email and track your guests’ RSVPs (or download your invitation to share via WhatsApp)

And the good bit?

All for just £9.99!!!

Jonathan’s Favourites :

Restaurant : Antipodea in Kew Gardens – their Brew Melt is a family favourite for breakfast on a lazy weekend.

Hotel : The Dorchester – there’s something special about having afternoon tea there with our daughters once a year.

Holiday Destination : New York – we have family across the pond and we always make sure we fly in to the Big Apple – so much to see and do.

Shop : Hmmmmm…very difficult to say, but I do like Reiss, my wife’s a fan of H&M and our daughters love Smiggles at the moment.

Website : Vimeo – inspiration, inspiration, inspiration!

Parenting tip : If you’re serving food at your child’s party, try individual packed paper lunch bags. Not only will each child get the same portion, but you can easily cater to any food allergies and it makes clearing up a whole lot easier too. Oh, and go for juice boxes or small bottles of water – less chance of a spillage!

The Return Hub : Relaunch Your Career In Financial Services

How many friends have breezed back into a senior level role similar to what they were in before they had kids? Not many that I know of. Some by choice admittedly, however most have lost their confidence and just don’t know where to start.  Here is the good news though if you are interested in returning to financial services – I have a fantastic recommendation that will help you in your quest!

The Return Hub is a unique recruitment company. They are connecting organisations who want a better gender balance at mid and senior levels with talented professionals who have left the financial services industry but now want to return. There are hundreds of experienced and talented professionals, the majority of whom are women, looking to return to work in senior financial roles who are currently underrepresented by the existing executive search community.

The Return Hub aims to redress this imbalance and ensure employers have access to a complete and diverse talent pool that is not accessible through traditional recruiting methods.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“I worked with The Return Hub to help navigate my way back into a role in the City after taking a career break to have children. The Return Hub considered my skills and experience as a whole and with their in-depth understanding of the financial services sector matched me with quality, flexible opportunities. They were very supportive throughout the interview process and had an excellent understanding of the issues and opportunities for both parties. I valued their insight and encouragement a great deal and I would not hesitate in recommending them to others.”

Michelle, Returner

“I have found you can have your cake and eat it, as through The Return Hub I have recently returned to a high level position in finance following an extended break to have my family.”

Amy, Returner

The Return Hub was set up by Dominie Moss, a City headhunter with 20 years’ experience in the financial sector.

Dominie

REDRESSING THE BALANCE

In 2016 HM Treasury introduced the Women in Finance Charter. There are now 162 firms signed up to this voluntary charter and the numbers are steadily growing.

Alongside the introduction of the Gender Pay Gap Regulations in 2017, there is now a clear appetite to solve gender imbalance with firms realising the wider benefits for having a diverse organisation.

The Return Hub is redesigning senior level recruitment

They assess the skills and experience they have in The Return Hub and match individuals from this pool to fit specific roles with employers. They believe that Returners should be considered for permanent and interim positions as part of a robust and fair recruitment process.

In creating The Return Hub, they are making it easy for firms to do this.

Return To Work Programmes

The Return Hub contributed to the research that recommended employers with 250 or more employees should consider putting in place paid returner programmes or returnships with guaranteed training, advice, and support

RELAUNCHING CAREERS

In addition to Return to Work programmes, The Return Hub has found that many of their candidates are looking for a fair route back to relaunch their careers.

For these candidates, The Return Hub offers access to senior roles with companies that are actively seeking to hire talented returners with transferable skills.

If you are looking to relaunch your career after time out – contact The Return Hub today for completely free advice, webinars, events and to be on the radar for suitable opportunities.

Dominie’s Favourites

Website : Pinterest.  It is great for ideas when I spend most of my day looking at words and numbers. It is nice to look at pictures – it is a good creative outlet.

Restaurant : Zambura Clapham old town and Scotts in Mayfair for a special occasion

Shop : Feather and Stitch in Richmond – a lovely curated clothes boutique

Hotel : The Pig in Brockenhurst, Hampshire

Holiday destination : South West Ireland. It is a lovely break, has beautiful views and is great with kids.

Parenting Tip :  I have two young boys. Someone once told me that if you want your boys to carry on talking to you when they are teenagers; you need to make sure you really talk and listen to them when they are young. Time is always at a premium and it’s easy to be distracted, but I always try to follow this advice: keep talking and give full attention to everything they say.
