Essential Tips For a Child Friendly Holiday in Sri Lanka

Planning a family trip to Sri Lanka is a much more relaxed affair than in years gone by. A little thought is still required, though. Ailsa, the go-to-girl for all things family in Sri Lanka, has spent six years on the island with her two young daughters.

Here are her notes on travelling en famille…

ailsa

As Sri Lanka has developed, so has the option for holidaymakers to find most things they need while they travel. In more rural areas certain items are harder to find and with less English spoken, the language barrier can make it tricky.

What To Take :

I’d suggest all the usuals…sun tan lotion (though not overly-slopped as it damages the coral), mozzie spray, insect bite cream etc.

A small umbrella – good in the rain and the sun

Car seats (if you can fit one in) – aren’t too easily found so many drivers
won’t have them.

Disposable nappies – you can find them in most bigger supermarkets but the quality isn’t always great (powdered/formula milk is widely available)

How To Travel :

From Europe you have the direct/indirect dilemma – stopping in the Middle East or long-hauling it with Sri Lankan Airlines. Personally I always welcomed the chance to stretch the kids’ legs for a couple of hours mid-journey.

Once here you’ll likely be with a driver or, perhaps, jumping on the train. Just bear in mind that time and distance in Sri Lanka don’t correlate as you might imagine. Nip down the highway to Galle from Colombo and you’re done in an hour and a half. A ‘lesser’ journey between Colombo and Kandy can take you up to 4 hours. Well-stocked iPads are a (somewhat guilty) life-saver!

Train journeys, while wonderful, can be similarly lengthy. The most popular, from Kandy to Ella is stunning but you might do better to split it, either doing Kandy to Nanu Oya, or Nanu Oya to Ella, if you’re with young kids.

Sri Lanka

Where To Stay :

Set-ups obviously change from one place to the next so always worth checking what room
arrangements hotels can offer.

Ashburnham Estate has a great Family Room and two doubles that link privately which work well for families.

Sri Lanka

Gal Oya Lodge has a Villa with two bedrooms; again an ideal set-up.

Sri Lanka

Another favourite of ours, Coco Tangalla, has a really lovely two-room set up for families down by the beach.

Why House, near Thalpe, offers a beautiful suite – ante-room ideal for small children – from which parents can sip G&Ts on the terrace with kids asleep inside.

Sri Lanka

Best Beaches :

Sri Lanka’s beaches can look stunning but a surprising number have to be treated a little carefully when it comes to swimming.

The drop-off at Unawatana, near Galle, is a fair bit sharper than at, say, Mirissa.

Down south, the little beaches around Thalpe and Habaraduwa are gorgeous but can be
rocky in parts.

Weligama Bay is widely thought the best and safest beach for kids on that southern stretch. It’s a great spot for beginner surfers too.

At the right time of year, we’ve seen fewer places better for safe swimming than off Kalpitya on the west coast – try Palagama for starters.

Sri Lanka Beach

Enjoying The Food :

The locals love spicy food, but they are also very accommodating when catering for children. Most restaurants will serve simple food like omelettes, chips & vegetables etc. But for days when you are off the beaten track and it’s a struggle to be understood then the simple Sinhalese phrase “miris epa” (don’t add chili) is a really useful one, or “sarai (sa-rye) veddi epa” (don’t make it too spicy hot).

Sri Lanka

First Aid ‘Stuff’ :

Medical care is good in Sri Lanka – you won’t find many swanky GP clinics but access to very good doctors isn’t a problem. The island is now officially Malaria-free so Malarone, or anything similar, isn’t needed. In some parts, notably Colombo, Dengue Fever is a concern, though, so mozzie nets and spray in the late afternoon and evening are recommended.

Many Sri Lankans will also, of course, be very happy to recommend natural and Ayurvedic medicines. If you or the kids get too much sun then there are plenty of Aloe Vera plants to be found. In Sinhalese it’s “Kumarika” and if you ask anywhere you’re staying it’s likely they’ll have some in the garden and be very happy to provide it to soothe your or children’s sore skin. It’s the best!

School Run Style : 9 Pairs of Boots

On Saturday night, I threw on my blue jeans as I was wearing a cream top and wanted to go for the pale vibe. Then when I went to choose my footwear, I became unstuck!  I have a great selection of trainers and pairs of black boots but when it comes to paler shoes or boots to go with blue or pale jeans, I am at a loss! Woe is me I hear you say. Yes perspective…  But anyway,  I am on the hunt for some boots that will see me through the day to the evening!

Here is my shortlist..

When I first caught sight of the Chloe buckle boots, I recoiled in horror. To me they looked slightly strange, even ugly.

Chloe Suzanna £850

Chloe

However, as a lot of things (like Uggs!) they have grown on me. Whilst the original Chloe’s are well out of my budget, there are now lots of similar styles around. I have my eyes on these from Tophsop.

Montana Ankle Boots £55

Montana Ankle Boots

I love the red too not sure how much use I would get out of them!  Can’t get sidetracked from my ‘pale’ mission…

Montana red

Office also do them at £85. Check out the blush pink ones!

I also love the Isabel Marant Dicker Ankle Boots £315

Isabel

However the Isabel ones are ALSO out of my budget so Hush Thornton Ankle Boots £150  are a great alternative.

Hush Thornton

If you are more a grey kinda girl- these boots from Seven Boot Lane – Grey Suede Ankle Boots £155 will see you from the school run to the evening easily.

Seven boot lane

If you are looking for something slightly more glamorous one these from Ted Baker Lorca Ankle Boots in Mink £160  are gorgeous. Anything with Mink in the title has to be pretty!

LorcaOk I am not sure if I actually would, but on my cyber travelsI found these  Penelope Chilvers Safari Patchwork Boot £229 and thought they have to be given some air time!

What are your favourites?  Hope this has been helpful. Let me know what you are looking for and I am happy to help you.

Bringing Indian Cooking To Your Kitchen

Last week, I hosted my ideal dinner party. A cook bringing the food and your guests cooking for themselves. That takes singing for your supper to a whole new level, doesn’t it! We had a great evening being taught to cook Indian cuisine by the lovely Nidhi who runs Meri Rasoi cooking school. She hosts private classes or you can go to her beautiful home for a lesson in Raynes Park. (Win a £100 voucher towards your own class over on Instagram!)

Nidhi

Nidhi’s culinary journey began almost twelve years ago with the genesis of ‘Meri Rasoi’, which means ‘My Kitchen’! Despite being away from India all these years, she was always inspired to cook Indian food from scratch for her family and friends, as some of the best ingredients are easily available in London.

When it came to eating out I noticed an alarming lack of authenticity and understanding of real Indian food. There were thousands of Indian takeaways and restaurants but the dishes on offer were generally rich and spicy and unlike what we eat on a daily basis.

The British love for Indian cuisine and their willingness to experiment was clear to her from my early days here and with this in mind, she started ‘Meri Rasoi’ as an endeavour to introduce authentic Indian food in British kitchens. The plan was simple – easy to prepare food that could be built into weekly meal plans to provide a nutritious and healthy variety to the entire family.

Nidhi family

Nidhi believes that food should be fresh, healthy and simple to make and she loves inspiring people to cook from scratch and show them that Indian cooking is not always time consuming or ridiculously spicy.

I do this through cookery classes run out of my kitchen or privately in the comfort of your home. Indian cooking is also a very communal affair and I run various private events for people and team building workshops with schools, corporates and other organisations centred around Indian food and cooking.

Her classes are fun and interactive and appeal to complete beginners as well as serious food enthusiasts. It was an eye opener to realise cooking Indian food from scratch is not as hard as it looks once you know how!

Beginners

We were the complete beginners although my friend Chloe in the pic above seemed to know a bit more than us – hence the directing! 🙂

The classes are aimed at giving you an opportunity to learn not only how to cook delicious home cooked Indian food but also to use spices confidently, which she brings along from amazing suppliers. (She will tell you where to buy various items.)

Check out the gorgeous fresh ingredients and the beautiful spices.

I loved how she hung in paneer on my kitchen sink. That’s something I haven’t ever seen!

Paneer

Studious students with their lovely aprons – that they were able to take home!

Cooking

Nidhi does everything so well. She is patient (even when people aren’t listening!) and doesn’t cut any corners.  The only thing I had to do was set the table.

Table setting

We were totally delighted by our efforts when we finally got to eat! I just about served up the rice with no spillages, despite a few glasses of wine in…

Serving Rice

It was so delicious, especially the Chicken Tandoori – I won’t be able to have a takeaway ever again!

Table

What a fun evening. Nidhi is a fountain of knowledge and so generous at imparting it.

Take a peak at her favourites…

Restaurant : Cinnamon club at The Old Westminster Library.

“I love their modern take on traditional Indian classics. The last meal we enjoyed there was on our anniversary and included tandoori chicken in pistachio korma, garlic naan crumble and Bombay style vegetables with cumin pao (bread).”

If you want to enjoy food as if you were sitting in the foothills of the Himalayas, then do visit the New Asian Tandoori restaurant in Southall – Roxy. A bit rustic and my favourite dishes there are lamb bhuna, sarson ka saag (fresh mustard leaves cooked with spices) and makki ki roti (Punjabi flatbread made of maize flour) washed down with a glass of chilled mango lassi.”

Some of her other favourite restaurants include Thai Square in Putney, Barnes Depot and Bam Bou in Fitzrovia.

Hotel : Kumarakom Lake Resort, Kerala (India)

“Our last family holiday in India was in Kerala and we stayed at the Kumarakom Lake Resort which has the most breathtaking setting against the Keralan backwaters. The resort offers a selection of Ayurvedic treatments and massages which combined with yoga and carefully prepared meals is the ultimate mind and body detox.”

Holiday Destination : Kerala (India) and Rio (Brazil)

“They are two places that stole my heart the very first time I visited them. Kerala known as ‘Gods own Country’ is truly the most tranquil place I have visited within India. Everything about it from food, lagoons, mountains, tea, wildlife and serene beaches make it a travellers paradise.

If you are ever travelling to Rio you must also visit ‘Buzios’, a fishing village which is known as one of the 10 most beautiful areas in the world. We enjoyed a 3 week holiday in Rio when I was pregnant with our second child and it is definitely a place I want to visit again.”

Website : Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube

Shop : Good Earth

“This is an India based luxury retail store with an organic cafe has to be my top choice. I love browsing their wide selection of homeware, decoration and kitchen products with each design being truly unique and narrating a story of a particular tradition or culture in Asia. They do have international delivery available but I cant wait for them to open a store here in London!!”

Parenting Tip

“I feel in today’s day and age, it is the parents responsibility to simplify their children’s life given there is so much pressure to produce super humans who are the best at everything. We try and instil in our kids that it is important to take time out to reflect and also let the mind wander which we feel opens the door to new ideas and endless possibilities. We love the outdoors and make it a point to spend time with nature on a regular basis. I bond with them through cooking and my husband is a star at entertaining them with his funny stories – they’ve even written a book together called the ‘monster in a hole’ and are currently looking for a publisher :)”

I highly recommend you Book a course with Nidhi either at her beautiful home in Southfields or put together a group like I did at your own home! Email her for more information!

She is also giving away a £100 voucher toward a cooking lesson or course, so head over to Instagram and enter.

Bon apetite!

Making Better Videos With Your iPad or Iphone

The majority of the time, when I am contacted by PR’s – they ask for my online video presence (aka vlogging – no, it is not some form of whipping).  This is pretty awks as I don’t really have one!  Anyone who knows who the world of social  media, will know that times are changing and that it is important to have a strong online video presence – especially if you want to keep up with the youngsters.  I have a YouTube channel, from which I occasionally upload an amateur clip to, but I am really keen to learn how to video and edit videos so they look a bit more professional.

Luckily, I have found a fantastic company to help me and will be going along to their course on Tuesday evening! In the meantime, let me tell you a bit about them!

The Quick Brown Fox is a growing video production company with a real love for the carefully crafted moving image.  Whether you are a school, a small business, want to start a podcast, product demo or an online tutorial – they can help you.

From their south-west London base, husband and wife team Karina and Victor offer their clients over 15 years of filmmaking and video editing experience combined with creative backgrounds in Architecture and Sound Design.

Their social media savvy team can also help put your business on the map with engaging video content.

We proudly help businesses and organisations tell their story in a captivating way that captures their audience imagination. Whatever the size of a project, there’s no need to be nervous about having our filming crew over.

After running his own video production studio in our native Venezuela for over eight years, Victor decided to relocated to London in 2010 to finish his masters in audio engineering.

Here, we were soon married and when we had our second daughter, we soon realised our demanding jobs were no longer sustainable. We both worked long hours – Victor as a sound engineer, and me as an architectural design consultant. Unable to see enough of their girls, they decided to create a business that would provide that all-important work-life balance.

Family Pic

Since they setup as TQBF in Summer 2014, they have created 100s of videos for private clients as well as for some of the best known brands: Facebook, SuperDrug, TopShop, Bobux, Dazzle & Fizz, Fetcham Park, SWL.TV, Scholastic UK, Made In Me, Urban Explorer, SamLabs, Cakes By Robin, Gee Brothers Bespoke Printers, Mothers Meetings, The Modern Nursery, AllByMama, BKD, London Mothers Club, Kensington Mums and many many more.

TLM Monthly Edit

TLM Monthly Edit : February 2017

So lots of news this month!  There have been major developments in February on The London Mummy. I have added Notices, an Instagram Shop and What’s On to the home page. Let me explain!

Notices

I am often sent emails about positions, jobs, rentals, properties which haven’t really had a place on here but I have created this page which I will keep up to date with the latest goings on.

fullsizerender-19

What’s On

This has proved a big hit – I might have to start categorising soon. Every event I see that I think is worth a mention gets updated in What’s On. This could be a pop up, workshop, concert or festival amongst other things. If you ar hosting an event and think it would be of interest to London mums (and further afield – I love my non London, non mum readers – TLM is for you too!) drop me an email.

What's On

Shop

Everything that I feature on Instagram or the blog going forward will be added to the shop so that it is easy to find if you recall you have first seen it somewhere on TLM. Here is a taster of what I have added recently.

If you like traditional French kids clothes, check out Alice a Paris. Here is my eldest playing monopoly in the Antoine Shirt. Go up a size as they come slightly small.

Antoine Shirt

Superstar Kids is a fantastic book written by a father Gavin Rhodes. Each story has a strong moral and it is rhyming so easy to plough through. Buy it here

Superstar Kids

Wild Child Kitchen kindly dropped some samples of their new organic kids range of meals.  If you are short on time and your kids lap up the healthy food, this is a great company to have on your speed dial!

Wild Child

I am loving my daughters new dress from MyTwirl. It is really well made and really twirls when she spins!

My Twirl

Directory

I can’t forget my beloved Directory. It is an extensive list of useful services from the home and holidays to medical and courses (and parties, clubs…)

Here are the latest additions –

  • I am delighted to have added Katie’s Classroom  which are online video tutorials for Primary school kids. They are really well constructed and Katie is a great teacher!
  • Have also added a speech and language therapist Kingfishers so if you have any concert over your childs speech development, get in touch.
  • Alice Sushi Art hosts art and craft children parties.
  • Performance In Mind work with young athletes to help them overcome specific issues such as anger on court or anxiety before a match.
  • The Little Reading Club is a book delivery subscription to your door.

Also worth a mention is Okido is an arts and science magazine for 3-8 year olds. Perfect for a budding scientist! I flicked through it at a friends house and thought it was fantastic.

I am bursting with new fashion brands and collections but they warrant their own posts. If you missed my handbag post, check it out here.

School Run Style : The Perfect Spring Bags For Mums On The Run

The only type of bag I have used since I waved goodbye to my last nappy (my kids nappies!) is a cross body bag. When you are carrying scooters and book bags, the last thing you need to be carrying is a bulky handbag.  The perfect cross body bag has to go over the shoulder, sit nicely on the hip, have enough room for keys, phone, wallet and maybe a packet of baby wipes (that I still seem to need) and look effortlessly cool but not like you are trying too hard.  Get it right and it will update your look and be the perfect addition to your wardrobe to carry you into  Spring.

This week I popped into House of Fraser to see all the new handbags that had landed.  It was not only vast, but neatly laid out with plenty of shoulder candy to feast the eyes on.

House of Fraser

Here are my top 6 cross body bags, that will take you from Winter to Spring, effortlessly and stylishly.

Nica Finn Cross Body Bag £49

This bag is a classic shape that evades any current trend, allowing you to use it year in year out.  It also comes in Pale Pink and Grey – perfect for summer.

nica

Pieces Finne Navy Flapover Tassle Bodybag £50

I love this boho style bodybag. The tassle is also super cute and the soft fabric makes it a very comfortable wear.

Modal Lily Cross Body Bag £89

Metallic is a strong trend this year but if it is too much to put on your body, a little nod to the trend with this silver chrome cross body bag will keep you on point.

modalu

Jane Normal Snake Skin Tassle Bag £25

I am a sucker for animal print. Whilst I think leopard print is better in winter months, this lighter colour (mock) snake-skin is perfect for sunnier days.

jane-norman

Dune Ejay Suede Chain Handle Bag £65

I love this moss-green suede bag. Another popular colour this year.  It is super smart and will hide the dirt too.

dune

Biba Gretel Cross Body Bag £99

This is my top pick.  It has 4 spacious compartments inside so no rummaging for your bus pass. It is a good length and great quality which could withstand some stern pulling from a toddler.  Brown goes better with neutrals and blues which I am envisaging will play a large part in my summer wardrobe – well, blues anyway! biba2

It is so comfortable, I even absent-mindedly wore it whilst I was writing this post!!

This post was written in collaboration with House of Fraser although all opinions are my own.
