Business Spotlight: Choose The Right Childcare With Koru Kids

Finding the right childcare can be a challenge for parents and kids! So when I discovered Koru Kids, I was blown away. It’s a childcare service that simplifies finding a good match to look after your children and helps to dispel the worries that arise with wondering if someone is suitable. I caught up with its founder Rachel Carrell to find out more and share this brilliant service with you all.

Koru Kids has kindly offered me a £50 discount to share with The London Mummy readers when they sign up (T&Cs apply). Visit Koru Kids through a link on this page to apply the discount.

What is your business and what makes it unique?

Koru Kids is a modern childcare service, providing part-time childcare to thousands of families in London. I wanted to make it unique by having us do all the hard work for families when it comes to getting the perfect childcare. Koru Kids helps with everything from start to finish – which we don’t believe you can find anywhere else!

From vetting, training and reference checking all our nannies, to all the admin. We’re totally obsessed with making our families’ lives easier, we’ll do almost anything to make it happen!

Through our service parents find a fantastic person to come to their house and look after the kids, and we make sure they’re all perfectly set up on the legal side, and provide a ton of ongoing support – more than I could even go into here. You’re not alone, we’ve got your back.

How did it all begin?

Before founding Koru Kids, I worked at McKinsey and in health technology for years. It was only when I had a baby – and all my friends had babies – that I realised how difficult childcare was in London. It’s hard to arrange, incredibly expensive, and common options like nursery just don’t work for lots of families.

I kept hearing horror stories from friends who weren’t happy with their choices but felt powerless to change them. I also saw lots of female friends unable to go back to work or making career choices they didn’t really want to make, just because they couldn’t find the right childcare. I felt deeply that this was unfair and bad for society. I decided to quit my job and make it my life’s work to create better childcare options in London. I set up Koru Kids to be all about three things: really great childcare, as affordable as possible, and as convenient as possible.

What is the meaning behind the business name?

I’m from New Zealand, and koru is a Maori word meaning ‘unfurling fern frond’. I love the idea of our children unfurling before us, and the loop of the shape represents the loop of Koru Kids care around our families and nannies. My daughter’s middle name is Fern, so it just felt right.

Who is your ideal client?

Sounds strange but my favourite type of family is one that is in a REAL pickle! Families that feel out of control, parents that are slowly losing their minds, not enjoying their parenthood. That’s where our service can make such an instant, immediate and obvious difference. Every day I hear from parents like this who have brought in Koru Kids and it’s so wonderful to hear about how everything has become easier. Recently, one mum told me we’d saved her marriage. (That result is not guaranteed!)

What is your top parenting tip?

Focus on intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic. That means avoiding rewards charts and bribes where you can. Those things can work ‘in the moment’ but over the long term create more problems than they solve. Instead, wherever possible, focus on trying to help your child understand ‘why’ things are important, then give them control over their own decisions. This isn’t easy – and you shouldn’t beat yourself up for not doing it 100% of the time – but it does lead to the strongest foundations of a great life for your children.

Interviewee’s favourites

Holiday destination: New Zealand, where I’m from! I’m happy my friends and family are safe there as it is Covid-free, but also devastated that I couldn’t go home for Christmas

Restaurant: During the pandemic, I’m loving Dishpatch, which sends high-end restaurant food you cook at home.

Hotel: Woolley Grange – a wonderful family-friendly place in Wiltshire. We managed to escape there in the summer and it was an incredible oasis, one of the highlights of our year.

Podcast: My favourite podcast is The Braincare podcast – it’s short (15 mins), practical and insightful about how the brain works, and how we can use that knowledge to improve our own lives. I’m obsessed with that child development and the podcast covers the ‘grownup’ version of the topic!

Quiqup : Shop, Pick Up & Drop Whatever You Need

When it comes to new technology, I am slightly adverse to trying anything new as I am aware that it may become another thing to distract me from my day job (being a ‘good’ Mummy).  However, Quiqup will actually help you to be a more productive and subsequently happier Mum, as it will free up more time for the enjoyable things in life.

The beauty of Quiqup is that once you have downloaded it on your phone (IOS and Android) and entered your details there is no subscription – you only pay when you need it.

Not only is it perfect for a busy mum who can’t just nip to the local florist for the dinner parties flowers in 4 hours time or has no time for a ‘proper’ cafe in the local cafe, get it delivered to you!

These are all the different options.

After getting the bank this morning I realised my cards with my husband over in the city, so I simply booked ‘my own personal courier’ to go and collect them and bring them home.

Then I got slightly carried away with the ease and reasonable price of the service and ordered some donuts for pudding this evening!!

I don’t want to wax lyrical to anyone who has just had a baby or is about to have a baby or for those of you who are poorly – you need this now!!! A Mocha frappacino light with less ice? Yup, coming straight up quicker than you can get to the front door to receive it!

WHERE DOES IT COVER?

Basically the whole of London but could be coming to a county near you soon…

HOW MUCH IS IT?

They can’t put a price on time, so they simply charge for distance travelled.

My Credit card being collected from St Pauls and back to Fulham was £11.50 and the donuts were £7.50. Not bad eh?

Click here is more detail on pricing but these are worth their weight in gold surely?

Still not sure whether it is for you? Take a look at the little video I put together of my experience using Quikup!

One Lane App

Need a hand with the school run or need someone to ferry your child from school to a class after school. This is a great app to link you up with the other mums who can help you. Perfect if you don’t need a nanny but do need a bit of help with logistics.

The Pandolly Podcast

I have only just ‘got into’ podcasts and this is the first one I have subscribed too. Pandora and Dolly are journalists at the Sunday Times, among many other accolades and their weekly podcast is both hilarious and informative covering current affairs to the latest fashions. I also love Dolly’s weekly email ‘thedollymail’ that I just savour. Sign up to it here

Treasure Trails

If you have a little Sherlock at home, head to Treasure Trails which is a website to download a Treasure Trail in your area. Perfect on a dull day when you are wondering what to do or if you are on holiday and want to explore the local area. We did the Putney one and it was brilliant and took us to places we didn’t know existed (and also got our grey matter working!)

Times Table Songs – Quick Brown Fox

I love this. If you are in the throes of learning timetables (your young ones, not you – you should know yours already…) Quick Brown Fox are a duo who have take popular pop songs and change the lyrics to learn your times tables. You will find yourself watching on your own – so catchy! Definitely a YouTube channel to subscribe to so you can be the first to know when they release new songs.

&Breathe Postnatal

If you have just had a bambino and quite rightly need a little downtime, & Breathe Post Natal are one day retreats in London and the UK (Woolley Grange) and rural one week retreats in France. The retreats are centred around wellbeing, fitness, resting and healthy food.  It sounds heaven! Both of you can go – dad and baby and they also have facilities for older siblings.

TLM Monthly Edit

TLM Monthly Edit : July 2016

There is no slowing down despite the summer holidays commencing. Work still needs to be done and there are services to make life easier. Have a look at the wonderful ‘service heavy’ July Edit with a couple of other goodies thrown in for good measure.

ihateironing

Can you imagine if there was a service that collected your dry cleaning at an hour convenient to you and delivered it back 24 hours later – spotless (and also sending you a reminder text that it was being delivered/collected?) Well, ihateironing does exactly that. It is so easy to sign up and it the prices are standard shop prices but without you having to leave the house. We had a suit dry cleaned and shoes re-soled and I will be doing my jumpers in due course.

Indian Summer

Indian Summer is a gorgeous boutique filled with treasures for babies, gifts, jewellery and fashion. Visit them in Fulham or check them out online – they gift wrap beautifully too so perfect to send as a present or even to yourself. I especially love their kaftans.

City Cruises

How often do you walk along the river and long to be on a boat? We have done the commuter services between the City and Putney but they are inside & not very scenic. We fancied taking the sprogs on a river cruise so chose The River Red Rover. It is all-day hop on, hop off Thames river pass offering unlimited access to the river for 24 hours or 72 hours. You can hop on and hop off at any one of four piers, with open passage on any City Cruises sightseeing boats for a full day spent exploring the sights of the Thames.  We boarded at Westminster and went up to Tower. The commentary was ad lib and very amusing. The skipper pointed out landmarks and gave us plenty of new facts. My favourite was A Room In London….

Aldi

I am an Aldi convert. After receiving an inflatable kayake (£39.99) and a soft archery set (£19.99) of the highest quality for the lowest price – it will always be my first port of call for garden toys. Also loving the Olympic wetsuits  and I hear the food is swell too. Swing by when you next see an Aldi or you can also order most online.

The Little Paws Hotel

I met a lovely lady Clare, who runs a Dacshund Hotel from her home in Earlsfield.  You must have her on speed dial if you wan the best for your little dog whilst you are away!

People Property Services Spotlight

London Property Management

One look at Amelia’s smart and concise website, A & L Property Solutions, would entice any homeowner who has a property that needs to be let or managed, to enlist her to do it for them. Her website is an extension of her professionalism and her background in property gives her the experience to take the pain, time and paperwork and do it all for you. She will find trustworthy and professional tenants and manage to process from start to finish.

image

Amelia has many years of experience in the industry. Her entrepreneurial mother has a property portfolio, so she has always helped find her tenants and manage properties from a very young age. At the end of University, she worked as a property stylist in Central London, which gave her a fantastic insight into what tenants wanted, before finally moving into residential agency.

After she had children, she decided to use her resources and set up on her own.
Thank goodness she did. London needs a personal service with someone who you can trust implicitly – and Amelia is just that.
