Joanna Archer Garden Design : What To Plant In Your Garden Now

When I posted a story on Instagram of myself bewildered at the garden centre, I was delighted when Joanna responded with simple yet gorgeous suggestions of what I could plant in my garden at the moment. So helpful. Especially for a novice like myself.  I thought it might be helpful if she would share her expertise, what to plant in your garden now.

Joanna

Joanna studied Garden Design at the prestigious Inchbald School of Design and is an RHS qualified horticulturalist.

Since setting up her design practice Joanna has designed and built a wide variety of gardens both in London and the country. She works with a select group of hard working landscapers who have a keen eye for detail and carry out the construction with great care. All trees, shrubs and plants are sourced from leading nurseries throughout the South East that deliver to your door. In addition, furniture, pots, lighting and water features are sourced for you so your garden is complete when she leaves.

Cover Image

I am very grateful to hand TLM reins over to Joanna, who can help you get your garden summer ready!

It’s a great time to add instant colour and texture to your borders. Take a good look at where the gaps are and how much sun those areas might get. Then make a shopping list before heading out (don’t get tempted by anything flowering at the garden centre…we’ve all done that, right?!)

Here are some fun combinations to help you get started…and head to www.crocus.co.uk if you prefer shopping online.

SUN LOVING FLOWER POWER

Sun loving plant

Combine the tall spires of Salvia ‘Caradonna’ with the swaying bells of ‘Penstemon ‘Apple Blossom’.

Cover any gloomy bare soil with a fabulous Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and contrast with the flat-head blooms of Achillea ‘Moonshine’ and Verbena bon.

‘Lollipop’. This long flowering combination will keep your borders full of colour and bees until the Autumn.

The plants are all knee-high so handy for filling up narrow borders or the middle of large flower beds.

A BIT SHADY

A little bit shady

For half sunny/half shady areas, try Digitalis purpurea ‘Dalmation Series’ for a shot ofpurple in early summer.

Throw in some drifts of Astrantia ‘Buckland’ and edge the border with Alchemilla mollis for some zingy acid green. The Geranium wallichianum ‘Havana’ will be a pretty lilac carpet around the edges.

Towards the back put some Anenome ‘Queen Charlotte’ so you have something to look forward to in the Autumn.

SHADY AND DRY

Image Board 3

Don’t despair if you’ve got dry shady gaps under trees and next to walls.

Get to know your ferns, this Polystichum setiferum has beautiful feathery fronds all year round
and is a great back drop to other plants.

For early summer colour combine the delicate Aquilegia ‘Yellow Bonnet’ with Geranium mac. ‘White-Ness’ to brighten up those pokey corners.

The Euphorbia robbiae will be a neon green carpet and looks great with Tulips (if you remember to plant the bulbs in Autumn). Liriope muscari has small purple spires to keep things cheery until the end of the year.

ACCESSORIES

Accessories Board

I absolutely love this parasol from the East London Parasol Company. There are so many tempting brollies and some tasselled cushions if they take your fancy.

After you’ve done all that planting, have a sit down on one of these amazing armchairs from Fermob. The chair is £395 and the low table £145. I can’t recommend their furniture enough, it just never ever rusts and you can choose from 24 different colours!

Contact www.barbed.co.uk to place an order, note there’s a 4 week lead time.

Pretty melamine plates are always handy in the garden, this Paint & Petals range is
on sale in Anthropologie now!

Don’t miss these cool outdoor cushions, part of a new collection from Maisons du Monde

Good luck with your garden!

The Return Hub : Relaunch Your Career In Financial Services

How many friends have breezed back into a senior level role similar to what they were in before they had kids? Not many that I know of. Some by choice admittedly, however most have lost their confidence and just don’t know where to start.  Here is the good news though if you are interested in returning to financial services – I have a fantastic recommendation that will help you in your quest!

The Return Hub is a unique recruitment company. They are connecting organisations who want a better gender balance at mid and senior levels with talented professionals who have left the financial services industry but now want to return. There are hundreds of experienced and talented professionals, the majority of whom are women, looking to return to work in senior financial roles who are currently underrepresented by the existing executive search community.

The Return Hub aims to redress this imbalance and ensure employers have access to a complete and diverse talent pool that is not accessible through traditional recruiting methods.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“I worked with The Return Hub to help navigate my way back into a role in the City after taking a career break to have children. The Return Hub considered my skills and experience as a whole and with their in-depth understanding of the financial services sector matched me with quality, flexible opportunities. They were very supportive throughout the interview process and had an excellent understanding of the issues and opportunities for both parties. I valued their insight and encouragement a great deal and I would not hesitate in recommending them to others.”

Michelle, Returner

“I have found you can have your cake and eat it, as through The Return Hub I have recently returned to a high level position in finance following an extended break to have my family.”

Amy, Returner

The Return Hub was set up by Dominie Moss, a City headhunter with 20 years’ experience in the financial sector.

REDRESSING THE BALANCE

In 2016 HM Treasury introduced the Women in Finance Charter. There are now 162 firms signed up to this voluntary charter and the numbers are steadily growing.

Alongside the introduction of the Gender Pay Gap Regulations in 2017, there is now a clear appetite to solve gender imbalance with firms realising the wider benefits for having a diverse organisation.

The Return Hub is redesigning senior level recruitment

They assess the skills and experience they have in The Return Hub and match individuals from this pool to fit specific roles with employers. They believe that Returners should be considered for permanent and interim positions as part of a robust and fair recruitment process.

In creating The Return Hub, they are making it easy for firms to do this.

Return To Work Programmes

The Return Hub contributed to the research that recommended employers with 250 or more employees should consider putting in place paid returner programmes or returnships with guaranteed training, advice, and support

RELAUNCHING CAREERS

In addition to Return to Work programmes, The Return Hub has found that many of their candidates are looking for a fair route back to relaunch their careers.

For these candidates, The Return Hub offers access to senior roles with companies that are actively seeking to hire talented returners with transferable skills.

If you are looking to relaunch your career after time out – contact The Return Hub today for completely free advice, webinars, events and to be on the radar for suitable opportunities.

Dominie’s Favourites

Website : Pinterest.  It is great for ideas when I spend most of my day looking at words and numbers. It is nice to look at pictures – it is a good creative outlet.

Restaurant : Zambura Clapham old town and Scotts in Mayfair for a special occasion

Shop : Feather and Stitch in Richmond – a lovely curated clothes boutique

Hotel : The Pig in Brockenhurst, Hampshire

Holiday destination : South West Ireland. It is a lovely break, has beautiful views and is great with kids.

Parenting Tip :  I have two young boys. Someone once told me that if you want your boys to carry on talking to you when they are teenagers; you need to make sure you really talk and listen to them when they are young. Time is always at a premium and it’s easy to be distracted, but I always try to follow this advice: keep talking and give full attention to everything they say.

Don’t they say death, divorce and moving house are the three most stressful events in your life (hopefully you won’t experience all!) So when it comes to avoiding unnecessary stress, it makes emotional sense to bring in some assistance. The experts in the ‘moving house’ category are the girls at London Property Match.

They were joined by Sarah Dixon and Tamara Colton and have since retired although continue to support when needed.

So if you are looking for a property in London, who you going to call? (Ghostbusters!)

Sarah’s Favourites

Website : Pinterest – it gives me arts and craft ideas to do with the children on the weekends, educational games to support my daughters’ learning, birthday cake ideas and provides inspiration for home improvement.

Hotel : Easy question this, Anassa in Cyprus. I tingle just thinking about the times we have spent there as a couple and with the girls. The service is out of this world, the food unbelievable, the cocktails (!) better, the weather warm when it isn’t in the UK, an outstanding kids club and a fabulous spa…

Shop : Difficult this as I hardly get the time to shop! I do love a bargain and this answer probably isn’t going to portray me in the best light but…H&M!

Restaurant : Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. It is very close to where I live and in all the years I have been there it has never disappointed. Simply amazing food, reasonably priced in a relaxed but appropriately smart atmosphere.

Holiday Destination : Cape Town, South Africa. With the Christmas period usually being a very quiet time for the property market we try and escape to South Africa for at least 2 weeks then. An overnight flight, yes, but only a 2 hour time difference so ideal for young children.

Parenting Tip :

I have found parenting at times, impossible. What helped me navigate the very early years was a routine. Not only did I know what I was meant to be doing and when, the girls did too.  A few years on my tip would have to be “you can only do your best” and that “you know your child best” so trust your instincts and go with what you feel is right.

The British Blow-Dry

There are two camps in life – manageable and unmanageable hair.  Even hair that looks manageable due to its silky smooth finish can be unmanageable for the ‘proprietor’ as they can’t do anything with their hair, like keep a curl in for longer than crossing the road outside the salon.  On the other hand some ladies with thick curly hair may find their hair manageable as they don’t have to wash it as much as those with finer hair.

My point is, we mustn’t judge a book by its cover and never judge someone’s hair before you know the full story!! My hair looks manageable – on a good day – as I have conditioned it, blow dried it, straightened it but little do you know that it has taken AGES and my smooth mop will disappear in a moments drizzle.

Most of the time I let my hair dry naturally. Unless you are 18 on a Bondai beach, this is not a very good idea. See below…

Au Natural

So as a consequence to letting it dry naturally – I always wear my hair up!

Credit : Rebecca Challis Photography

Credit : Rebecca Challis Photography

What a waste! Long hair and always up? Yes, I know!! But who has the time to moisturise, blow and straighten every time you wash your hair? I know I don’t!

So, when I was contacted by Edward James London to review a BRITISH blow-dry, I jumped at the chance. Wouldn’t you? (Despite not knowing what it was exactly, but I am a patriot through and through!)

‘I have heard of a Brazilian blow-dry, what is a British Blow Dry’ I hear you ask?

If you’ve considered having a Brazilian blow dry but have been frightened by the price, potential damage and time required in the salon, this innovative technique is far gentler on hair and suits the finer hair that most British women have, without stripping it from its important natural moisture.

The formula takes 15 minutes to apply, about an hour to set under a gentle revolving heater, lasts for 6 weeks and contains no formaldehyde and promises specifically to preserve volume.

img_2776

Edward and his team can tailor the treatment specifically for your hair.

For example, my hair is quite wirey so he used a slightly higher strength on than if you had fly away hair. I was pretty impressed even if I do say so myself! Here is the finished look!

LR

He also says that it should last up to 3 months and judging how ny hair has looked after I have let it dry naturally the last two hair wash times – I reckon he is going to be right.

It feels in excellent condition, still has its natural body and not a frizzy strand in sight.

img_2783

I am a complete convert and will be booking myself in for this treatment again. The whole experience was very pleasant, the ambience the salon, the attentiveness of the staff, the dreamy head massage and hand massage!

Aveda Salon

In the first few moment of meeting Edward and his team, I could see they really cared and were genuinely interested in my hair life and I felt he really got it – even the fact that I have killed the front of my hair with straightening it so much but that due to my little quiff, this was one area I wanted him to concentrate on.

Now I have found a salon that I trust, I may even try a colour. Edward suggested a subtle balayarge as he understood I wanted to keep my natural highlights.

Watch this space!!

18 Small Businesses To Support in 2018

Following on from the success of 17 New Businesses To Have on Your Radar in 2017, it felt appropriate to compile one for 2018. As ‘new’ is rather ambiguous, new in this post will mean new to me, which allows me to to go slightly off piste as have made some wonderful discoveries of late! One aspect they do all have in common though, is someone has slogged their guts out to getting it to where it is now – online.  So please take a minute to have a look, and even better – support a small business in this very quiet month and book or order!

Baroque Rocks

Emma had a passion for beautiful stones and jewellery and so rather than continuing to buy more and more (!), she took herself to do an accredited gem course to actually learn about her passion. She has subsequently set up an online shop where she sells beautiful items that she has found off the beaten track. Take a look – some exquisite pieces.

Three North Stars

Want pjs for boys and girls that are slightly different? Three North Stars was started by mother of 3 boys, Kim North who was fed up with what was in the shops. These designs were inspired by her travels when she was younger. I love them!

Three North Stars

Wondering what to do with all your little ones old clothes that are too good to charity shop thumbnut you don’t have the time to sell them online?

This is where Sprout & Shed comes in – send your clothes to them and they will do the hard work whilst you sit back and watch the sales coming in. (You can choose to give a percentage to charity so you won’t feel so gutsy!)

9 Ways To Grow Your Business in January

The Christmas Rush is over. No more sales. No more wrapping. No more queuing at the post office.  It’s all quiet on the western front. All you are left with is a bit of left over stock, a (hopefully) healthy bank balance if you didn’t spend all your profits and a really large waist line. (Sorry I had to include the last one!)  So, what can you do during the quiet periods to help grow your business in the long run?

How To Grow Your Business

I spoke to a friend who started a new business in November and had a fantastic start and lots of sales and even press in the run up to Christmas but she was apprehensive that her start up would fall flat in January.

So, what’s a girl to do until the next wave customers.

Plan. Prepare. Be proactive. Sort. Connect. Join. Act

If money isn’t coming in, dont give up.

Don’t use that as excuse to have extended playdates, extra pilates classes and join the PTA. No, your business needs you in these quiets moments to get the back bone right, so when the next wave hits you will be even better prepared than you were this time.

  • Did you have good marketing materials?
  • Was your website up to date and contemporary?
  • Was your customer experience seamless?
  • Were the returns and sizing clear on your website?

I could go on.

I have a very very long list of points I am attacking with gusto as soon as the kids are back at school.

Every year, you have to crit your business.

Especially if you work for yourself.

No one else will (dare) do it.

So, what can you do?

1). Thank your customers.

They are gold dust. Just because you made a sale through them, don’t desert them on your quest for more orders.

You are much more likely to have a repeat order than a new order.

I read so much, apologies that I can’t back this up with stats and footer notes – but I’m not making it up.

2) Send them a special discount code to say thank you.

I actually filtered my customers into sections before Christmas and emailed each group individually.

The Abandoned Cart Group

I explained that my checkout is not something I am proud of and I am sorry if it out you off. I also think the shipping that is added at the 11th hour can be off putting so I offered free shipping.

I am actually considering absorbing shipping costs into my products as think it does put alot of people off.

What do you think?

The Refund Group

This was a group that I wanted to gain the trust back from. Many ordered again after being issued a refund or return but I generally found, once bitten twice shy.

You have to refund with no question. I have a lower return on jewellery and fashion accessories than clothes that makes me consider moving more towards the former but the clothes do sell REALLY quickly.

Which do you prefer?

*BTW I am doing a flash sale with 30% off. Enter TLM30 at Checkout*

SHOP THE TLM EDIT SALE HERE.

3) Subscribers are GOLD DUST.

As good as it is to have followers unsocial media and people who review your products, there is nothing like having email addresses for your newsletter to land straight into their in box.

EMAIL ADDRESSES
If you want to receive updates from The London Mummy, please do so here!  (I have just seen my sign up form is soooo boring and not at all reflective of The London Mummy so a redesign of that is another thing to add to the list)

4) Work out what events are happening next year and get a campaign, your designs geared around it.

Valentine’s Day.

Father’s Day.

Easter.

Summer Holidays

Back To School

Halloween

Bonfire Night

CHRISTMAS.

Jump on the commercialisation of all these days! I am putting my thinking cap on for  gifts & jewellery on TLM Edit for Valentine’s Day.

5). If you are doing fairs, book them in now.

The good ones are wanting to firm up bookings sooner rather than later.

I am adding businesses who participate in fairs and a directory of fairs this quarter for both fair committees looking for businesses and businesses looking for fairs

6) Sort out your tech.

Any problems, go to People Per Hour or Fiverr for small jobs like logo’s.

I am working with a guy in who is helping me totally rejig both websites (and I am adding another website too but that deserves it’s own post!) so depending how that goes, I hope I will be able to recommend him! I ‘found’ him on Shopify Experts Directory.

7) Sort out your advertising and marketing budgets and get onto  Google Adwords.

It is double dutch to me, so either trial and error your way through it or outsource it. (The latter for me!)  It won’t cost much to grab some low hanging fruit and you will see good returns on investment.

Google adwords

8) Connect with people in the same niche as you or learn a new skill.

They are not competitors.

The country (world) is big enough and most people want to help and support so why don’t you start by giving a little like or follow and seeing what happens.

I am joining a Bird Table group in January to share my ideas, frustrations and concerns with women who have their own business. I cannot wait!

I made a mistake in my first year of blogging by being a complete island and not i have realised I need to meet and hangout with other bloggers. error but easily rectifiable. I also love supporting other small business owners by sharing their products.

There are plenty of courses about too.

Look at my Directory for ideas.

I really recommend the small one off How To classes hosted by Emily Reed of Putney Mumpreneurs  and Audrey Wiggin is a professional business coach  and has a Mastermind Group starting this month.

Get a mentor.  Have someone crit your website. Have a review and get there feedback.

This year I am going to start a little consulting sideline for women who want to start a small business or have started and need a few ideas of where to go next. So email me if you want more info about that! hello@thelondonmummy.com

9) Contact mainstream media.

It’s not all about online media. There are still some fantastic print options and they need content as much as everyone. Find them on Twitter, magazines and newspapers.

2018-4

Don’t be shy.

Send a really simple personalised email with who you are, what you do/sell, who it is perfect for a photo, the price point and website.

Press Release

If you are in PR, please don’t kill me. The above may sound village but I personally find a really simple direct email much more affective than a long windy press release!

I am going to include a list of new businesses next month, so if you are breaking into a new world and want a little shout out, please drop me an email hello@thelondonmummy.com

Oh, and Happy New Year – it’s going to be a good one!

Love

PS. I am experimenting including my TLM Edit goodies in my blog posts. Do you mind or does it really put you off? Would love your thoughts! xx

What To Do Once You Have Exhausted Your Network…

Having started a sideline to The London Mummy in the last 6 months, it has been so interesting to be on the other side. With The London Mummy, I am the publisher /editor and basically get to choose what goes in and what doesn’t. With TLM Edit, I have to market my own products and hope that it hits the right people. However I have learnt a few points to make sure it does hit the right people! So, what do you do though after you launch your own business/brand/product and you have exhausted your direct network?

network

Rather than a scatter gun approach to getting your small business out there, I wanted to give you some tips that I have learnt along the way (winging it all the way and a lot of trial and error!)

BEFORE YOU LAUNCH

1) If you haven’t launched yet, other than the obvious website, set yourself up on Facebook (a page not a group – this makes you in charge rather than your audience), get an instagram handle and if you want to widen your net further a Twitter account (although I hardly get any traffic from Twitter – FB is my best as people can click straight through to your website)

2) Make sure your handle’s (this is basically your social media name i.e. @thelondonmummy is the same across the board. Publishers do not have time to look up what your handle is all the time! Make sure it starts with the first word of your website!! I started with @londonmummylucinda and no one could find it as they were searching thelondonmummy.

3) If your desired handle has been taken, do as in number 2, but perhaps put a number at the end.

4) Whilst I am on the subject of names and handles, you have to think long term. I have slightly stitched myself up by choosing The London Mummy, as we know live in Hampshire (although renting out London – selling would be too final!) and will Always be a Mummy? Yes I will, but in 20 years I hope my sons will call me something else!

5) So, once you have sent an email out to your friends and family and asked them to buy, share, forward you will get a rush of sympathy/support sales and then unless you are picked up by mainstream media, it will all go quiet.

YOU HAVE LAUNCHED. WHAT NOW?

6) Link all your accounts so when you publish on one they publish on all. (Ok I haven’t done this as use different social media for different things – FB for interesting articles, Instagram for personal photos and fashion and Twitter – for contacting customer services!! ha) This will save time and save you from having to think about it.

7) Reply to comments – not generic – try and be personal.

8) Find a similar brand/company to you and engage with them and their audience.

9) Whatever you do, don’t buy followers – it is so obvious and it is much better to have s small engaged audience than a large fake one!

10) Host a competition and ask people to enter by sharing your page or tagging a friend. This will get you out there.  You can see how I am doing one today on Facebook and Instagram  and you can enter if you want to win this lovely selection!

11) Pay for a sponsored post and see if it works for you. I did it loads at the beginning and it really helped accelerate my following on The London Mummy but I spent far too much money on it.

12) Pick a few bloggers whose audience you would like to reach. Send them an email and an image and ask if they would like to give you a mention. If you don’t ask you don’t get! I am going to do a New Business Round Up again after the last one was well received, so email me and I will add you too (if you are a 1/2 man band and have started in last year). hello@thelondonmummy.com

13) Find journalists you like on Twitter and tweet them with a product idea for their next article.

14) Be listed in as many Directories as possible. Start with The Ultimate Directory!

15) Start a blog. Sounds exhausting but if you are trying to sell a product you have to sell a lifestyle around it. Sell boys T Shirts? Write about activities for boys in the garden. Sell women’s necklaces? Write about Autumn Jewellery Trends. You get the picture?

16)  Don’t just sell all the time – this will lose you followers sooner than you can say cake.

17) Show yourself occasionally. If people can visualise the person behind the brand they are more likely to proceed.

18) Keep your inventory up to date! I have learnt the hard way and it is very unprofessional to have to refund because you have sold out.

19) Don’t quibble about refunds. If anyone has any probs whatsoever I will refund no questions asked and be pleasant with it too.

20) Remember the customer is always right.

21) Offer some products for a raffle.

22) One month, give a percentage of profits to a chosen charity.

23) Send a few ‘influencers’ 1 or 2 items in the hope that they tag you in it.

24) Get you press releases sorted. Have you put together your Christmas one yet? Most publishers start thinking about Christmas in September, so get onto it (email me hello@thelondonmummy.com if you have a good product – have a lot of gift guides to fill and would love to support small businesses!)

25) If you need a bit of business coaching – I highly recommend life coach Olivia Read’s group coaching sessions, The Bird Table

Whilst I am at it – I am doing my first fair in Putney selling my wares, on Friday 29th September at St Mary’s Church, so please come and say hi!
