Harriet Hoult: Abstract Artist

If you want to know who the next big thing is in the art world, let me introduce you to Harriet Hoult.

Her pieces are beautiful and intriguing and would be a stylish addition to an empty space on your wall. If you don’t have any space, you may want to think about replacing it with one of Harriet’s.  She has a growing fan base and they are fast becoming collectors items – once someone has bought one, they often buy from her again. They would also make a wonderful present.

imageHarriet is an abstract painter who has an instinctive approach to her work. Each painting is a unique journey where she is continually challenged to trust in the process. She is inspired by the everyday and her work is an interpretation of these experiences onto paper.  She is fascinated by aesthetics and the visual interplay between form, space and colour which she is continually exploring. Harriet paint’s in acrylic, building layers, combining different shapes, marks and colours, to create abstract images. For her there is a “certain mystery in abstract form; a communication without direct suggestion that can be interpreted by the viewer, based on their own perceptions and can sometimes speak to a deeper part of us”.

Her studio is in Petersham, near Richmond.  It is approx 3m x 5m and it has a clear plastic roof which makes it fantastic in terms of light.  “I am a very messy painter so it is absolutely covered in a multitude of splashes and drips of different coloured paint”.  At either end of the space, are shelves where she keep’s all of her paints and brushes.  In an ideal world she would love a really big studio with lots of space as she love’s working on multiple paintings at the same time.  From the reaction Harriet’s pieces are getting, I imagine it won’t be long before she has her much desired larger studio!

Star Mela: Solution For A Summer Wardrobe

This morning, I emptied my black handbag with a view to swap it for something ‘lighter’ suitable for Spring.  However, I obviously had temporary amnesia as upon searching my cupboard, I didn’t actually have many (any) suitable Spring bags.

Earlier this month I stumbled across Star Mela.  I love most of their items, especially the kaftans and the bags and knew they would have a solution.

Currently deciding between the Estee Lem Bag that would be more versatile and and the Leila Emb Bag that would match my neon orange shellac…

Interview with Pepa & Co : Spanish Children’s Clothes

Whenever I ask a mother what their child is wearing, more often than not, it is from Spain.  Spanish clothes are becoming more and more popular in the UK as some people veer towards a more traditional way of dressing their sprogs.  The Royals have strongly influenced this trend and Pepa & Co is now one of Kate Middleton’s trusted boutique for her children.

The inspiration for Pepa & Company comes from her large Spanish family. Her mother (a mother of 5) used to be told

Your boys look like little princes.

The sentiment stuck with her. She liked to see children dress as children. The range are handpicked, quality and smart Spanish clothing, in both classic and contemporary styles. There’s a high attention to detail at affordable prices.

BONNIE: Pure Wool Jumpers

Antonia set up BONNIE after an unsuccessful search for a pure wool cardigan for one of her daughters.  The high street knitwear was a synthetic mix which she knew wasn’t going to last, wouldn’t be warm and she wasn’t prepared to buy cashmere at cashmere prices … ‘you have to grow into that’ she exclaimed!

Antonia with her family

All the BONNIE designs were drawn at her kitchen table and were then lovingly made in a Scottish mill in the Borders. BONNIE jumpers are very soft, come in great styles and colours.  Most importantly are machine washable.  You really can wear them everyday.  Mothers and children alike love them because they are sensibly priced, look fabulous and the wool warm & durable.

The quality, price and timeless style creates a wonderful line and would be a great addition to a child’s wardrobe. I’m hoping she starts a line for adults!

Whimsey Wood Children’s Books

Despite having 2 wonderful daughters, a cheeky baby son, a great husband, 2 rescue cats and 2 squeaky guinea pigs, Sarah Hill still manages to find time to write her wonderful children’s books.  I read Posie Pixie and The Snowstorm to my 4 year old son and he hung on every word.

‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s series consists of 35 books, which are divided into 5 sets each containing 7 books. Every book is written for a specific month in the calendar, so the flora and fauna change as you read through the series. There is also a proverb tucked into every story for the reader to find, giving her books real meaning. They would make a lovely present for a little one. 10% of her ‘Whimsy Wood’ book sales are donated to The Wildlife Trusts UK.

Cellandia: Cards For All Occasions

Beautiful stationary is one of life’s little luxuries.  It’s one luxury I don’t have enough of. I rummaged through my stationary draw this week to find a suitable thank you for a Christening this last weekend and all that I could come up with, was old regulation writing paper from boarding school and a couple of the free packs of cards you get sent by charities at Christmas.

image

Luckily, I have somewhere to turn.  Lovely London based Laura, has cornered a gap in the luxury card market with her original prints and themes, inspired by her love of photography.

A Hip Kid: Glass Accessories

After producing a crunched and leaking Evian bottle at an after school picnic yesterday, I realised that this means of water consumption for the next 5 warm (!) months was not going to suffice. What to do?  I think I have a chic and practical answer.

A Hip Kid, a lifestyle brand, as featured in the May/June Edition of Vogue, was started by two friends, Camilla Hicks, based in Clapham, and Avery Kaufman-Benemache, an American currently living in Paris.

Camilla and Avery

Avery and Camilla

Over Avery’s kitchen table in Paris, they had an idea for glass baby bottles which are more hygienic, with non slip (and non smash!) silicon sleeves.

They proved so popular, they ventured into other areas and now have a large number of products. On my wish list are the stemless wine glasses – perfect for slippery sun creamed hands at the beach.

The water bottles are also very cool, a great replacement for my plastic bottle and they would even spur the laziest person to exercise. All the gear no idea…

A Spring In My Step

Today was the first day of the Summer Term. For my son. Although cycling to school this morning, it felt like it was my first day back and I had forgotten to wear my summer uniform. Many of the mother’s sailed into school looking tanned (not from 4 days of UK sun, I can assure you that!) gorgeous and kitted out in a new Spring wardrobe.

I had to sort it out. I couldn’t do a rain dance hoping this fine weather will pass.  So, I weeded my wardrobe and made 3 piles-

  • charity
  • chuck
  • keep for next year

There is a now large whole in my wardrobe that needs filling.

So starting from the bottom up, I have decided these Silver Superga’s will add a spring in my step and I’m tempted by these little things from The White Company She never knows her luck!
