5 Ways To Buy School Uniform On a Budget

The days, weeks and months fly past faster with each year that passes. How can it we be approaching the end of the school year already? Not one to wish away the holidays – before we know it we will be scrabbling around in September trying to piece together their school uniform. Not this time. I am going to get their uniform ready for September in the next few weeks before they break up as I know once that bell rings – the days are not our own for a good 8 weeks.

So, how to do this?

1) Are their any families leaving the school who might want to flog you their uniform. Approach them.

2) Are there children in your oldest kids year that don’t have younger siblings? Ask their mum if they want to sell their old uniform to you for your younger ones.

3) Head to that second-hand sale and make sure you go with a list!

4) Book an appointment with the uniform shop and ask for a discount if you are buying a quite a bit. It’s worth trying!

5) Put a message on your local area’s Facebook page and see if anyone is selling any?

Once you have all these bits in place – get the basics like socks, underwear and vests from your trusty Marks and Spencers.

They currently have 20% off school uniform at present.

I have never thought of heading to Marks for school shoes, but after a quick peruse – you can definitely cover the basics with their selection.

Drayton Manor Theme Park : Fun Family Day Out

Despite the 300 mile round trip, we had a lovely day at one of Britain’s best theme parks. Situated in the county of Staffordshire, Drayton Manor Theme Park is a picturesque theme park based around a duck laden lake. Like many of the major theme parks (Peppa Pig World at Paultons, CBeebies land at Alton Towers), Drayton Manor has a dedicated area for any little Thomas The Tank Engine fan.

Thomasland

Thomasland is the perfect place to introduce your little one to the delights of a theme park in a gentle and fun surrounding.

Thomasland

There are so many rides in this area that queues were minimal. They loved the water pistol Fire Engine ride. Simple but brilliant.

Firengine

The rest of the park is packed with traditional theme park rides. This car ride is always a winner isn’t it?

The log flume was brilliant but very wet so make sure you cover up otherwise you will be walking around soaking for the rest of the day 🙂

Sadly my oldest who is a rollercoaster fantatic was disappointed to be 5cm too short to go on the ‘only 1 of 2 stand up rollercoasters in Europe.  #secretlyrelieved

Measuring

Instead we went on the some twisty upside down ride that made me slightly ill for the rest of the day. However we had our rollercoaster fix as there were plenty of miniature rollercoaster for 110cm and up…

Rollercoaster

There was a vast choice of places to eat. We chose a Pizza Pasta place next to the zoo (below they are checking out the Meerkats) and had pretty good meatballs!

Meerkats

We let lunch settle with a viewing of an Ice Age 4D Cinema experience.  We were thrown around and sprayed with a fair bit of water which the boys loved.

The younger two had a run around on one of the many adventure playgrounds.

H and I had a wander around the Dino Trail and brushed up on our dinosaur intel.

H also practiced his photography skills – great one of the three dinosaurs…

All in all a lovely day which would make a great birthday or holiday treat.

If you looking for a fun day out to amuse the kids this summer, you can’t go wrong with Drayton Manor.  As one of my kids asked the next day ‘ When can we go back?’

That’s always a good result!

London Home Tutors : Finding a Niche

Balham based Mary Lonsdale bought London Home Tutors 4 years ago from a family in North London where her friend, who was also a teacher, had run it for over thirty years. She trained Mary up for 6 months and then sold her the business. It’s now Mary’s family business which she runs with the help of two local mums.

Mary Lonsdale

So Mary, what is London Home Tutors?

London Home Tutors is a family-based business, over thirty years old and has helped more than 90,000 London school children since 1982. We specialise in one to one tuition for the main academic subjects taught in UK schools and London schools’ entrance exams, particularly the 11+ and increasingly the 7+. We also provide Academic Assessments for primary aged children.

What sets you apart from other tutoring companies?

We believe the quality of our tutors sets us apart. 80% of our tutors are qualified teachers with many senior teachers, Heads of Departments and Examiners amongst our tutors. We don’t employ under graduates or graduates and all our tutors have significant teaching experience.

We think this makes a real difference to the experience your children will have, because the tutor we send you will have a toolbox full of techniques and bags of experience to help your child whatever their situation and learning style. Whether they need a confidence boost or have a block on a particular topic, are feeling unhappy at school or have additional needs and need to learn in a particular way…our experienced teachers will know where to start.

We also have lots of tutors that specialise in school entry for specific schools. So if you call us and want to prepare your child for the Highgate School exam we can send you a tutor with a track record of success for that particular school.

What is your speciality?

Our particular speciality is providing Academic Assessments to help London parents understand their child’s suitability for competitive London day schools. We know from experience how stressful planning a school entrance campaign can be, especially when both independent and state primary schools don’t always tell parents clearly where their child is relative to their peers’ attainment wise.

It is also difficult to know what their potential might be and hence choose a school where they will really thrive and be happy.

Our assessment tells parents both where their child is now and what they are capable of, two crucial pieces of information that enable parents to plan properly and reduce their stress levels enormously!

This means school visits can be tailored and any tuition minimised. The assessment includes a full 11+ practice test and a tailored assessment report with age-related, standardised scores; comparing your child with British school children of the same age.

What is your niche?

Our niche is to help families in a holistic way. Of course, parents are pleased when grades go up and exams are passed, but what parents often value more than anything else is seeing their child’s confidence return and watching them enjoy learning again. Parents often mention that one to one tuition improves their child’s focus and concentration and as a result they become much calmer about stressful situations such as exams. With the right teacher helping them, it’s amazing how many parents tell us their child’s behaviour at home and at school has been really positively affected.

Mary’s Favourites

Shop : I love our local toy shop QT Toys on Northcote Road in Battersea. I’ve spent hours in there with my kids comparing boxes of Lego and train sets…such fun! I think it’s really important to support our local shops on high streets in London as we’ve had so many lovely shops close down.

Website : When I have some free time I like to watch videos on www.TED.com because the subjects are so varied and fascinating and it reminds me that there are so many big unsolved problems in our world, it gives me perspective on whatever I am worrying about that day.

Restaurant : My local Italian in Clapham, Numero Uno. It always reminds me of good times with my family and lots of much needed date nights with my husband when my children were tiny. The food is scrumptious and the staff so welcoming.

Hotel: Limewood in Hampshire. It’s not too far from home in South London and is grown up heaven when you get there. Having a glass of champagne in their outdoor jacuzzi is my idea of bliss.

Holiday destination : I love the quiet north of Ibiza and particularly the area around Benirras beach where the sea is crystal clear and the bay is nestled amongst fragrant pine cliffs. I love the sunsets and the sea food!

Parenting tip : Daily reading is the most important habit you can instil in your child that will set them up for life long enjoyment, intellectual curiosity and exam success!

Bump & Baby Club : Modern Antenatal Classes in London

In my excitement of finding out I was pregnant with my first child, I eagerly booked into my local NCT class, the free hospital course and a private Antenatal class. Yes, I did 3 as I didn’t want to miss out on any potential friendships (wasn’t too worried about the information!)

Anyway, if Bump & Baby Club had been around in 2010, I would have certainly just signed up with them. They are the largest independent provider of antenatal classes in London and the number one alternative to the NCT and would have ticked all the boxes in one.

Bump & Baby Class

Currently operating in 29 locations across the capital – about 4,000 people pass through their doors each year!

In addition to antenatal classes, they run hypnobirthing courses and fun pregnancy events.

Let’s find out more from Alex Kohansky, who founded Bump & Baby Club.

Alex

Why did you start Bump & Baby Club?

Becoming a parent is one of the most extraordinary and emotional times of your life, and sharing the transition with a group of people who are going through the same thing as you, at the same time, is incredibly special. I experienced it myself when my husband and I took antenatal classes during my first pregnancy.

It inspired me to set up the company and I noticed that there was a real need for unbiased, evidence-based antenatal education, that was high in quality.

There’s so much information out there and I was keen to find a way to deliver it in a way that would appeal to modern parents-to-be.

hero-2

Who is it Bump & Baby Club for?

Our antenatal and hypnobirthing courses are for anyone looking for a relaxed, straightforward and unbiased preparation for parenthood.

We attract a very sociable crowd and most of our groups go on to become great friends, which we love!

l1020821

What’s next for Bump & Baby Club?

We’re working on increasing the number of classes we run each year and expanding to new London locations too. One day we might expand outside of the capital, but our priority is to maintain the highest level of teaching – excellent instructors take time to find, and the search for them sets the pace of our growth. Offering ancillary services might be something we consider as well.

Where are your courses?

We’re currently in 29 fantastic areas of London – and each one has lots of character.

North of the River we’re in Fulham, Notting Hill, Queen’s Park, Hampstead / West Hampstead, Belsize Park / Primrose Hill, Kentish Town / Tufnell Park, Mill Hill, Finchley, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Islington, Stoke Newington, Walthamstow, Hackney.

And South of the River you’ll find us in Greenwich, Blackheath, Brockley, East Dulwich, West Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Clapham, Balham, Tooting, Battersea, Earlsfield, Wimbledon, Putney, Richmond and Twickenham.

Be Quick! This £19.50 Maxi Dress is Selling Fast

I recently spent £90 on a V neck jersey dress. To be fair, it is lovely – double lined and well cut, but still, it’s a jersey dress for the holidays. Wanting to replicate the style but in a different colour and price point (lower), I explored the world wide web but to no avail.

Until the latest press release from Marks and Spencer popped into my inbox alerting me to the £19.50 Maxi Dress.

screen-shot-2018-06-08-at-11-53-08

Now we are talking.

Initially drawn (obviously) to the traditional black, staple navy and racy red.

They could all be dressed up or down and take you from the beach to sundowners.

Having read the reviews on the website – the main gripe is that the side split is slightly too high – which I think is a good thing. It stops it being in anyway mumsy!

screen-shot-2018-06-08-at-11-54-07

There is also a summery electric blue and aqua green which are pretty.

The patterns aren’t really my thing but if you are looking for some – they have these maxi’s in a plethora of crazy prints!

Any take your fancy? I am thinking red, but will size up so it’s not too clingy.  All the calamari and sangria need some space to go (not that I will be eating that this summer – more like 99ers and fish and chips from a brown paper bag!)

When M & S gets it right, they really get it right – go grab one now! x

4 New Brands at House of Fraser

There are 4 relatively new brands at House of Fraser (well knew to me) that I wanted to draw your attention towards. If you have found yourself at the school gates realising that you are merging with the other mothers and want to redefine your style but not sure how – check out these reasonably priced labels that have some great items this season.

Great For… Shirt Dresses

Lobster Shirt Dress £99

Not for everyone but with neutral sliders, minimal make up – this would turn heads. Just fingers crossed that no one else IS wearing it as a pair of lobsters – you would never be forgotten!!

Leopard Shirt Dress £99

Leopard print has become as mainstream as navy (oak not quite but gone are the days of it being linked to clichéd barmaids). The colours also suit nearly all colouring.

Just Sweatshirt £80

I love a slogan sweatshirt and it doesn’t seem to be tiring. Avoid anything that says LOVE or similar and you should stay one of kind, especially with Amsterdam across your chest.

To avoid looking to military, wear unzipped over a white T shirt. Very patriotic.

Great For… Statement Blouses

Savannah Cheetah Blouse £119

We will be seeing more and more animal (littoral animals) print over the next year. Embrace your inner animal and get ahead of the curve with this cheetah blouse.

I can almost smell the clean laundry just by looking at this fresh and crisp blouse. I love the tied wrist detail too.

6 Versatile Jackets For Cooler Summer Nights

Other than being met with thousands of denim jackets or pale coloured leather jackets, it is impossible to find a non statement cover up for warmer evenings. Don’t get me wrong, I love denim and leather (and if I wanted a denim jacket it would be this one with epic puffed shoulders), but in the summer I want a little versatile cover up to throw on once the sun has gone down, that will go with patterned and coloured dresses/tops.

So, what am I looking for? A pale cotton/linen/rayon cape or jacket that will go with everything.

Perhaps a tiny bit of embellishment/colour.

Can I find one in the shops? No! I’m just met with boring cardigans, floral kimono’s and patterned capes. It’s so frustrating.

So, what’s the only thing to do…

I particularly like the last one as it is so neutral. Be quick though as items as versatile and rare as this won’t stick around for long (they have just landed)

Ok, double the price but fingers crossed double the quality?
