9 Ways To Style Your Desk

Last week I had an old school friend over for a cuppa. I have been following her rise through the ranks in the interior world since she started Annabelle Holland Design and love her smart, cosy style.  I made the most of her visit by showing her the office space that we are creating in the garage and listened intently as she generously and tactfully shared her ideas for a pretty and practical desk and office space.

Annabelle Holland

Annabelle was full of useful tips that I had never thought of, so asked her to share them in a post. Here they are!

9 Ideas to Style Your Desk

1) Light.

If it can’t be natural then be sure to add a directional funky desk lamp to keep your desk well lit.

DESK LIGHT

2) Clear the clutter.

File away unnecessary papers to allow space on your desk, leaving more urgent items in stackable acrylic trays or pretty storage boxes making even the most mundane tax return look more appealing.

DESK STYLING

3) Colour Palette.

Surround yourself with colours that you love to create a serene working environment and loosely co-ordinate the items so that it looks pretty on your desk.

stapler

4) Stylish stationary.

Because it somehow feels better doing those accounts with a pretty pencil on a decorative notepad or simply pencilled into a stylish diary.

Pencils

5) Art or Motivational words.

Surround yourself with pieces that you love and make you want to be in your office.

cropped-desk_annabelle-holland-design

6) Something Green.

A plant like a cactus is pretty to look at and low maintenance so you won’t need to be worrying about wilting flowers.

desk-close-up-2_annabelle-holland-design
7) Chair.

A comfy stylish high back chair will beckon you to sit at your desk and get to work!

8) Re use old pots.

Wash out old candle pots and use them for small items like paperclips or pencil sharpeners.

DESK

9) Light a candle.

Because it’ll make the room smell good and will keep you calm on Monday morning!

Where Every Item Is From…

Acrylic trays from John Lewis
Filing Box from Nina Campbell
Grey and Gold Pencils from Katie Leamon
Stapler from Kate Spade
Organiser from Smythson
Plants from Pod and Pip
Old Candle Pots from Diptyque
Leather Tape Measure from Zara Home
Candle from Neom
Desk Accessories from House of Fraser
Table Lamps from Marks and Spencer

I have really enjoyed checking out these sites, especially ones I hadn’t heard of (Katie Leamon), small start up (Pod & Pip) and the larger brands that I didn’t realise had such an extensive home section (French Connection!)

9 Festive Family Activities

Christmas lights were switched on on Marylebone High Street last night which has given me the red light to go into full Christmas mode. What better way to start the Festive season on The London Mummy, with a ‘What’s On’. The lovely Melissa Gauge from Spare My Time is sharing her top 3 places to visit this Christmas with your family to get you in the festive mood.

Take it away…

1) Santa and his huskies at London’s Wetland Centre

Queen Elizabeth’s Walk, Barnes, London, SW13 9WT

2 & 3 December

WWT

Christmas is coming early thanks to a magical Santa’s Grotto with free husky and donkey rides for little visitors at the WWT Wetland Centre, Barnes Father Christmas tickets are selling out fast but there are plenty of other festive activities on that weekend – husky and donkey rides are free with admission (children 8 or younger, with weight restrictions) or you can lend a hand at the Elves workshop, making festive decorations or small Christmas gifts to take home.

(If you’ve not been to the Wetland Centre before it’s a must even without the Christmas activities – over 100 acres of managed wetland reserve, nature at its best.)

Top Tip: Apart from Father Christmas, there is no advance booking so make sure you get there early to avoid disappointment.

2. South Bank Centre

Belvedere Rd, London, SE18XX

10 November – 4th January (10am-11pm)

image-3

From Christmas Markets to roof top saunas, from Skandi rooftop bars to giant snow globes, from ABBA sing alongs to Nordic folk tales there really is something everyone at the Southbank Centre.

Top tip: try visiting the cosy Rekorderlig Cider Lodge for a glass or two of mulled wine

3. Winter Wonderland

Hyde Park, London, W2

Top tips : Keep your children close – this is a very busy event! We write our telephone numbers on our children’s arm just in case they decide to go for a wander.

Outdoor Ice Skating

With so many options of outdoor ice skating on offer we’ve narrowed it down to our top 5:

Hampton court palace: Open from November 24th – January 7th 2018.

This has to be one of the most picturesque ice rinks, overlooking Henry VIII spectacular home beside the Thames.

Tower of London:

Open from 17th November – January 2nd 2018.

Tip: visit in the morning if you are taking children, it does get busy later in the
day!

Somerset House:

In our view, one of the most romantic ice rinks – perfect for that elusive date night. For an extra special touch try one of the Fortnum’s Skate Extras

Skate Extras Festive

Natural History Museum:

Open from 26th October -7th January 2018. The Natural History Museum is our die-hard Christmas visit. Be sure to book a penguin for the kids – they do run out quickly

Top tip: Outdoor ice skating does get VERY wet and cold! Bring plenty of layers, gloves and hats (possibly waterproofs for children!).

Covent Garden Christmas Pudding Race

2 December.

Great Pudding Race

Did you know that for the past 36 years there has been a Christmas Pudding race to raise money for cancer research? This fancy dress fun run is full of entertainment and amusements.

Children are not able to enter but not to worry, there will be a lot to see!

Operation Christmas Child

Be a part of changing a child’s life this Christmas and donate a shoe box with a few small gifts and necessities inside. This wonderful tradition started in 1990 and has helped over 146 million children in 150 countries.

Spend the morning compiling your gifts with your children and drop them into your local centre.

Operation Christmas Child Festive

Here is a link giving you do’s and don’ts to put inside your box.

Top tip: Remember to wrap the box and the lid separately so they aren’t stuck together when checks are done.

Shoeboxes need to be in by 18 November.

The Lace Blouse Edit : Ebony or Ivory?

A lace blouse is my preferred evening/party/smart day top (if that’s a style…) It is very forgiving, feminine and on the money this year. The shops reflect this and there are a multitude pretty blouses around – all with a Victorian vibe.  Today I have popped over to House of Fraser as they have a multitude of brands that have hopped on the lace blouse bandwagon. I am already so there, the question is – what camp you are, ebony or ivory?

Are you ebony or ivory?

There don’t seem to be any other colours and perhaps this is for a very good reason, that if you are going to flounce – you want to do it neutrally!

If you still aren’t sure about this look, these images from Pinterest will give you a good idea.

Hollow cut, laser cut, ruffle, high neck (not all at once – although some do!)

Are you in team white?

So, which camp are you? I personally like a bit of winter white as in the evenings over Autumn/Winter everyone is black. TLM Edit is reflecting my winter white penchant too – now I just need a bit of a tan!  xx

This post is written in collaboration with House of Fraser but all picks and opinions are my own!

Up Close with Leonora Bamford

Continuing on my Up Close series, I am delighted to be interviewing the lovely Leonora Bamford, founder of My Baba THE parenting website.  I first met Leonora (or Leo as her nearest and dearest call her) her when our sons were doing football (or chasing a ball like drunk toddlers) together. I pretended I didn’t know her (come on, we all do that with high-profile peeps, don’t we?) even though I knew where she had been the night before from her tweets!

I had been following her blog since it started (originally called My Baba Blog) and have watched it grow exponentially. My Baba now boasts an online Magazine and videos as well as the daily scoop on food, family and lifestyle for all your parenting needs.

Gift Guides

Small Business Gift Guide : Godchildren

OK, let’s start this year with a group I didn’t touch on last year. Godchildren. Don’t you love them! But it’s one thing getting your own kids presents for Christmas, extending that to God children and it can become a headache. You don’t know what they already have, what they deserve (joke) and are they into vehicles or is it sport… (Ok you should know THAT, but you get the picture).

Really keen to champion as many small businesses in my Gift Guides as possible this Christmas so I have asked Victoria Wren, owner of the wonderful website Crafty Wrens, that specialises in crafts for kids.

Move away from the thought of pencils and a colouring book – Crafty Wrens has the most enticing products that I guarantee you may put something from her website on your Christmas list!

Take it away Victoria…

The best thing about buying for Godchildren at Christmas is that you can give them something their parents wouldn’t necessarily buy and something that you would probably have liked to have had yourself.

ALL AGES

Best kit of all time for all ages, Boys & Girls is the Den Kit. There is a small one and large one, a pirate themed one and a girly one with a cosy blanket. They advertise it as ages 3-83 because it really is something all the family can get involved with. I gave one to my daughter last year which stays at my parents house so whenever we or the cousins go there we get it out and all 7 are entertained for the weekend.

AGES 2-7

Ages 2-7 you can’t go wrong with a Unicorn Garden, a new and improved version of the Fairy Garden. Just brilliant and only £20.

Unicorn Garden

AGE 8+

Dragster, Stunt Buggy & Hovercraft are 3 kits which keep Dads and kids super happy on Christmas day. Something to build, play with and race! Prices £12-£22

Dragster

STARTER KIT

Best starter sewing kit I have found is the Molly Rabbit which has pre-punched holes and a plastic safety needly which makes it a very achievable project for ages 6-9.

Molly Rabbit

CREATIVE

If not into sewing I don’t think you can beat Pom Pom Galore’s Pom Pom Lights. But if you want to make your own why not try the Pom Pom Making Kit.

Pom Pom Kit

A really fun present for creative children are Pixie Dixie’s Paint your own PJs

BOOKS

You can never beat a good book. I love all Usborne Children’s Books which if you can buy through one of their reps at a charity fair you are not only supporting a worthy cause but helping a small business too. If your in London Daunt Books is just a haven for great ideas as the staff are constantly reviewing new releases. Two books with a twist which are two of Crafty Wren’s bestsellers are Build The Human Body and Build a T Rex.

Build the human body

SCIENCE

I love all museum and art gallery shops. All the kits from The Science Museum are a winner – I love this Top Secret Intruder Alarm

400x400-fit-197656_1

A really good starter science kit which is educational but fun is the Stars and Planets for ages 5 + and for older kids the Neon Light Writer is something fun for their bedroom.

Neon Light Writer

OUTDOORS

A present which I have bought all my godsons which is going to amuse them and seriously annoy their parents is this horn from Five Boys Clothing for a bike or scooter which has over 25 sounds on it.

CLOTHES

If you want to be a cool Godparent of teenage Godchildren you can’t go wrong with any of the T Shirts From Mobs. London

OLDER GODCHILDREN

If you want to keep it crafty, older kids love Make Your Own Lampshade and the Ultimate Solarbot where you build 14 Solar Powered Robots.

Lampshade

They always say a good present is something you want yourself. I love helping people find the right present for the right child which ends up giving them as much pleasure as it is for the lucky crafty kid to open on Chirstmas Day.

How To Do Euro Disney Successfully

If I didn’t bore you on Instastories over half term with our last minute family trip to Eurodisney over October half term and you are thinking about a trip yourselves, this post is for you!

Alex and I have collated some top tips about the journey, the hotel, the experience and the Disney attractions. You will notice from the detail that he has had a profound input! I know if you are considering it – you need hard facts and not just Lucinda’s spiel (oh dear, I am talking in the 3rd person, I must move on)

methode-sundaytimes-prod-web-bin-3eae2324-bee3-11e6-a6be-a68f4613cb25

If you would rather watch than read – have a sneak at this 3 minute video.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u897FpGaOg[/embedyt]

THE JOURNEY

So, we left home straight after a large breakfast and drove to Folkestone which is around 2 hours by car. The quickest travel crossing to France is Le Shuttle and it’s also much easier to get to as you don’t have to drive through Dover to the port. The crossings are regular (3 or 4 per hour) and only around 30 minutes journey time until you reach sunny Calais the other side.

The ferry may be more fun if you can spare the time. Shopping, duty free, arcade machines, restaurants, coffee, children’s play area etc…  but be prepared for the longer journey and a little bit more sweat.

After your arrival in Calais it is just under 3 hours to the parks and with the GPS it takes you straight to your hotel front door. No navigating French roadsigns and the French motorway system. Just remember to drive on the right hand side of the road! There are lots of yummy French welcome breaks to enjoy a croque monsieur on route and on the tollroads are always clear of traffic.

We left home at 8am and even with the hour time difference we arrived at our hotel by 3pm. Just in time for check in, a cheeky beer and an explore of the hotel.

WHERE TO STAY

On top of the Eurodisney Hotel they are loads of themed hotels which are much cheaper and just a shuttle bus ride to the park entrance.

We stayed at the Explorers Hotel which was 5 minutes by shuttle bus. Explorers was very reasonable (depending on which tripadvisor deal you can get) and we had a lovely themed family room which slept up to 6 people.

The highlight was the water park which for my two boys was just as big a treat as Disney itself!

934d59df_z

THE PARK

The bus from the hotel drops you right out the front of Disney Village so you only have a couple minutes to walk before you hit the action. The two parks  open at 9.30am and the first ride or show start at 10am.

The earlier you get there the less queues so we would always do the most popular immediately.

img_9650

There used to be more characters wandering around (4 years ago when we last went) but now they follow a timetable so you can see when and where they will be.

Here they are with Mary Poppins.

img_0208

Try and do 4 days rather than 2 or 3.

It means you’re not in a panic sweat to complete everything. You can really enjoy the magic and take it all Disneyland has to offer.

It’s also cheaper the more days you go. 4 day passes were not available through our hotel so best to book these on the official site or on the door when you arrive. The sterling price was also cheaper than in Euros.

TOP TIPS FOR A GREAT TRIP

Into the afternoon the queues can sometimes be up to 45 minutes long so fast track passes are a must. Go to the ride and put your fast track ticket in the machine and you will be given an allocated time to come back. Don’t do it too late in the day (after 2pm) unless you want to be given a time slot that may be too late in the day (and you will be in bed!)

There is also an option of baby switch so one of your stands at the side with the baby whilst you go on and then you swap (take the baby) and go on -taking your other kid for another go without having to queue.

The best thing we discovered was Single Rider. If you are prepared to sit on your own, the queue time is really quick, often only 5 minutes.

The parades were a massive highlight and run all the way through the day. The Grand parade which includes all the characters is at 5.30pm and well worth staying for. The Princess parade was on at 1215 which we also loved.

img_9846

Fireworks are at 10pm during french holidays. 8pm during off peak days. So check this before you go as they were too late for the kids (us) when we went.

For an extra special treat and to meet the characters over dinner the Eurodisney Hotel buffet is brilliant. It is called Inventions.

It is the only place you can meet the characters other than Auberge De Cendrillon (Cinderella) in Fantasyland at the Park. Be prepared quite expensive but so worth it to spend time with the characters without the rush and pushing from other people in the park or the studios.

You have to book in advance (sometimes up to 8 weeks) as it gets booked so quickly. It is difficult to get a good slot and at a sociable time of the day so be savvy and book way before you get there!

FUN RIDES FOR ALL THE FAMILY

Buzz, Small World, Pinochio, Peter Pan

Avoid Snow White (3 year old was petrified!)

FUN SHOWS FOR ALL THE FAMILIES

Animagique, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Stich

The shows are are over in the studios and they are not to be missed. It’s easy to ignore them on the map as they are in French and you have no idea what they actually are but they were my total highlight – especially Animagique.

FUN RIDES FOR THRILL SEEEKERS (ie. my 7 year old)

Hyperspace mountain, Toy Story land, Star Tours, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Thunder Mountain

EATING

Food is expensive!

I am not particularly fussy and can show down a burger as quick as a hungry trucker but service is slow, queues are long and the food as meh.

I recommend eat a massive breakfast and taking some snack for the queues. If you do want to eat in a restaurant, eat in the Disney Village (where you can actually get a decent coffee – you can’t in the park!)

OTHER TIT BITS

If you don’t have the luxury of 4 days and you are maybe thinking of a long weekend – divide and conquer!

Boys go and one way girls go the other. (don’t hold it against me – if your son wants to go to the Princesses and boys Star Wars – still divide and conquer!)

Height restrictions can be upsetting if you fall short after much excitement, so check on the rides and height restrictions ahead of the day.

Basically it is either 100cm (most rides other than family where all can go) or 120cm (height of a 6 plus year old)

We were pleased to have gone when we did (age 7, 5 and 3) and don’t feel that we need to go again so they can do more.. but time will tell eh. We are rather partial to a theme park.

Is it for you? Do you fancy it or do you think your kids won’t even notice if you don’t do Disney? xxx

Head over to my shop to get ahead of Christmas shopping (or just to treat yourself!)

Fashion Little

Flannel or Onesie?

Before I had kids, the thought of them actually wearing a onesie over the age of 18 month felt beyond me. Oh, but how things change when we are actually living it. We now flit between traditional nightware – flannel pjs and long nighties to the most garish items imaginable. My 7 year old is currently in a Chewbaca, 5 year old Ninja Turtle and 3 year old in Peppa Pig. Sounds delightful doesn’t it? But hey, they love them, they are warm and comfortable so are fine until they have to don their evening best when they might float downstairs in their pjs and see people who aren’t family.

It’s that time of year to get sorted. The festive ones are already out in force already, so whether you are looking for traditional attire for Christmas Eve or something more ‘relaxed’ for saturday evening pizza and dvd, these suggestions from M and S should cover everything from age 1-16.

BOYS TRADITIONAL

London PJs Age 1-16 years

M and S have nailed their boys pjs this season. Thought I would start with this London scene…

sd_04_t86_5152_z4_x_ec_90

sd_04_t86_5090_zz_x_ec_90

Star Print Dressing Gown 1-16

Pretty standard and isn’t going to wow anyone but practical.

Santa Hooded Onesie 1-16

As this goes up to a size 16, if you have a small framed man in your midst over Christmas – he could borrow this and pretend to be the big man himself. Do you think it would be convincing?

sd_04_t86_5512_b0_x_ec_90

GIRLS TRADITIONAL

Unicorn PJs

The collar makes up for the colour.

sd_04_t86_2685_jc_x_ec_90

Very Cath Kidson. If you are staying with Grandparents this Christmas – these are the type they would love.

sd_04_t86_2145_b4_x_ec_90

A busy scene of lovely festive cheer. I know who will be getting these (my little Robin!)

sd_04_t86_2619_z4_x_ec_90

Frill PJs

Love the yoga style elastic ankle pants on this set. Very feminine with the red pattern giving a little nod to crimbo.

sd_04_t86_2144_z4_x_ec_90

Floral Embroidered Dressing Gown

This also has an embroidered back. So elegant.

sd_04_t86_2020_z4_x_ec_90

Good enough to take the bins out in.  Want an adult version pronto.

Bauble Stretch PJs

So snuggly and cute. I wouldn’t mind a pair.

sd_04_t86_2223_zz_x_ec_90

Owl Onesie

I love the bingo wings.

sd_04_t86_4048_t4_x_ec_0

Would work on both boys and girls – great if you have a mix – buy them all one!

sd_04_t86_2655_e4_x_ec_90

Velvet Cat Slippers

These look designer. If you have a little girl – snap these up quickly.

Hope this helps you get ahead of yourself.

Have a great day

Up Close with Chloe Samwell-Smith

Country air and a little break from the blog (well only 2 weeks) has given me a chance to think about what I would like to read on The London Mummy. As you know I love recommendations and like hearing about other people’s, so I am kicking off a new blog series Up Close. It will consist of a quick fire questions with influential women in business.

Chloe Samwell-Smith from the highly successful London-based Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Blog Chloe Loves To Shop is kicking off the series today! I love her natural style and all her insights into new brands and how to wear certain items.
