The London Mummy Christmas Gift Guide : Men

It’s pretty easy buying for the kids – it’s the other half that always poses the question ‘does he really want it/need it/like it’ and there is probably a no in there – especially if it is expensive. Mine dislikes me spending too much on his presents, although this year he has asked for Hermes tie. Alright then, that will be bought in the sales so don’t hold out much hope! So, my debut guide for this year –  starting with men… in all their different forms – here we go…

The Summerton Club

Give Dad a a monthly whisky prescription from The Summerton Club. They send beautifully-aged bottles of delight to their members every month. They focus on the main three of Whiskies (Bourbon, Whiskey, Whisky), Brandies (Armagnac, Cognac, Grappa) and Rums (Cachaça, Rum, Rhum, Ron) so if you have a whisky lover – this would make a great present.

Summerton Club

Little Peach Portraits

A silhouette is timeless and contemporary. Upload your profile shots to Pia from Little Peach Portraits, choose the size and colour – and voila – all done.

Little Peach Portraits

Tom Lane Crew Neck

I love the classic shape and every day wearable colours of Tom Lane’s cashmere and lambswool collections. You can’t go wrong with a crew neck jumper (especially in navy!)

Tom Lane

A Star Is Born Soundtrack

I defy anyone not to like this soundtrack. Whatever your preference, I genuinely believe you will like this. It’s become our family film/our ‘song’ (Always Remember Us This Way…) and will be a firm favourite for dinner parties (of which we have none planned) 😉

A Star Is Born

Tonder & Tonder

Luxury Bed Linen. Not something I can justify buying myself – but oh yes, what a great present for your other half and then you get to enjoy it too!  The styles are classic so would get the nod from the blue team, it is excellent value for the quality and run by such a lovely lady, I want everyone to buy linen from their the whole time!

He also sell very smart faces and a profit from every sale goes to a charity of your choice. Such a wonderful product and a great cause.

Gaucho Watch Strap

Children’s Oil & Charcoal Portraits with Samuel Francis

Deciding on who to paint what will inevitably be passed down to the next generation and so forth, can be a tricky one. Should you go oil or pencil, traditional or contemporary, capture the kids at the same time or at the same age…. Having the children painted by a portrait artist has been on my ‘to do’ list but it had never made it to the top until recently, when I was introduced to Samuel Francis.

This is where the lovely Samuel Francis can help. Samuel has drawn and painted from childhood and started to specialize in portraiture from an early age. These years of experience show in his beautiful portraits, in which he uses charcoal and oil paint. His approach to portraiture is based on simple draughtsmanship that results in a timeless yet informal feeling to his portraits.

Samuel came up to our house in Hampshire to meet the kids and do a pencil sketch and take some photos to work on to complete the finished piece.

Samuel Pencil

One of the most profound quotes from the day was his reply to my 8yr old commenting on his pencil sketch, that it slightly looked like him

‘At the moment it is half you and half stranger and I am going to take it away and make it look 100% like you’

And he certainly did, not only did he physically capture him, he really captivated their personalities. We agreed on the photo from which to work on, the colour palette to suit the room they would be hung in, and the size.

I dressed them traditionally in the same hue so they could be hung together. The colour of the frame brings them out beautifully and altogether.

We are yet to paint the house so the cool colours of the paintings didn’t work on the ‘magnolia’ walls above the fireplace, so we had a reshuffle and for the time being thought they looked best in the TV room. This is not their final resting place, I wanted to hang them up to correspond with this post so you could see the whole process!

Having two children himself, sam has a very natural way with the kids and the whole process was really fun.

He is a true professional and his communication throughout was brilliant – he sent me the finished paintings on whatssapp so I could suggest any changes – not that I needed to!

We are so thrilled with the paintings and highly recommend Sam to paint your kids. I am thrilled to have got them all done at the same time as it captures them at a moment in time as siblings and we were able to get the proportions and colouring correct. I urge you to call Sam and get cracking, they won’t stay young and angelic forever.

Sam has a few slots left before Christmas – so get them done as a Christmas present for your other half!

Fathers Day Gift Ideas

In an ideal world, most Fathers wouldn’t want a present – they would want an act of service (I am not suggesting that ladies, more along the lines of a cooked breakfast!) I think Fathers Day is a great time to buy him something for his summer wardrobe. Do they really want a mug that says ‘Best Dad?’ I think not.

Fathers Day falls on Sunday June 19th this year so plenty of time time to justify summer shopping. So, with summer holidays knocking at our door, this gift guide is geared towards their holiday wardrobe!

Kicking off the list is the obligatory summer shirt. If you want something a bit different but not too crazy Indigo Island have some wonderful shirts.

I have ordered Zakynthos (trying to move away from pure pale blue… )

I also have my eye on the Koh Samui if I can persuade him that pale pink is cool.

Koh Samui

Upgrade their swimmers with these Big Cat Clothing trunks. The green shells are fresh and different and the quality is good so no see through trunks after a drop in the pool!

Enter FATHERSDAY at checkout for 20% off!

If the old boxers are fraying, upgrade to some of Pandora’s Boxers The patterns are cool and the design is well cut. They also arrive in a lovely matching bag (perfect for all their odds and ends) and they wash beautifully. I love the palm ones.

Pandora's Boxers

Give him a gift that will last a lifetime whilst also benefiting workers in the Massai with a Manyatta belt. In the Household Division? He will love this one. MCC Member? This is for him!

I have recently discovered My Odd Balls where all profits go to men affected by testicular cancer. I love these magenta striped sport socks

am also tempted by the rainbow ones for myself too. All that sport I do… 😉

Now, mens summer shoes. It’s a tricky one. Like a bad coat, bad shoes are sackable (when I was a youngster!)

I have done some investigating and listened to my heart rather than fashion telling me what to like and I do think these Castaner’s work for men in the summer.

Like loafers but with an espadrille base. I am not saying mine would wear them as he is a flip flop kinda guy (perhaps I shouldn’t admit that) but I would love to force him into some of these!

These light tortoise Bowery sunglasses (like a modern day wayfarer) from Finlay & Co would suit most shapes and colouring.

The beauty of them is you can personalise them and put their initials on the arm.

If you have a sporty other half and are over seeing him carrying his trainers around in a plastic bag, why not give him the gift of a NEW sports bag from Apatchy? He would never buy one himself but it sure will make heading off to five aside in the evening with all his kit in one bag!

Sports Bag

Hope this gives you some good ideas. Don’t leave it too late or they will be getting that mug…

St Pancras : A New Shopping Destination

On Thursday I felt like Tom Hanks in The Terminal. Except I was at St Pancras International all day by choice. In fact, I had planned to spend a couple of hours there but after I visited every shop, stopped for a couple of beauty treatment and had a coffee in one of the many cafes, 5 hours had elapsed and I was actually late for the kids!!

St Pancras International is not only an international train station, it is now a shopping & eating destination.  The beauty of St Pancras is it is beautiful too. No stark lights like popular shopping centres so I didn’t get the fuzzy head that I usually get if I stay too long inside one.

The natural light that pours through the roof makes it a destination for design students and tourists who want to take some lovely London photos too.  The architecture really is incredible.  Read here for the history of St Pancras.

The concourse of shops is orderly and neat with large glass windows so you can peer in before you enter.

St Pancras

Each shop was beautifully laid out, not very busy and I noticed how attentive the staff were.

The added bonus is that opening hours go beyond the normal high street to cater for time poor travellers, eaters and shoppers.

St Pancras kindly gave me a £100 Gift Card to buy Mothers Day presents.

Gift Card

There was no shortage of ideas!

Jo Malone

If you know what scent you like (I like Peony & Blush) anything from Jo Malone would make a lovely gift – the packaging alone conjures up excitement.

I loved trying the limited edition scents that have just been launched. My favourite from this range, English Garden, was Poppy & Barley. It is scrummy!

I also had a cheeky hand massage (which was free!) You can book online. A lovely treat for you and your mum!

Jo Malone

Neals Yard

I really enjoyed perusing the shelves of Neals Yard (a treat in itself to go deeper than a quick glance through the window when the kids are in tow).

I was particularly taken by their teas and supplements (and want to try the Organic Beauty Oil which you add to your breakfast, smoothie or dressings!)

Natural Health

I personally would love some intensive body cream tottery and get my flesh ready for Spring. The lovely lady who works in the shop recommended Geranium & Orange Body Balm!

Geranium & Orange Body Balm

Cath Kidson

If you love bright and a bit of floral, Cath Kidson is a lovely place to gander.

Cath Kidson

I love the new London Toile Print.  Good to see a London scene without the obligatory red (bus) and black (taxi) in it!

London Toile

Fortnum & Mason

What a treat to have a peak in Fortnum & Mason. What struck me was ho reasonable the prices were. A box of biscuits in a nice tin only (ok not your average digestives) was £12. A lovely present for the right motherland who can beat a receiving a Fortnums bag!

John Lewis

A more reasonable alternative was down at John Lewis who’s whole shop seemed geared towards gifts. These Whittards tins of teas are pretty – it makes meant to buy the whole range of candy coloured ones.

As you know I am a sucker for anything pink and love the packaging on this Georgian tea caddy!

Earl Grey

Marks & Spencer

No shopping destination is complete without a trusty Marks. Whilst I have my eye on these yellow slim waisted trousers  there is no denying that Marks is the place to grab a good quality stylish bunch of flowers on the run!

Frill Pocket

Oliver Bonas

Oliver Bonas is basically a homeware and gift shop so you will find something in there. I have my eye on these small gold printed rugs. Perfect for jazzing up a small corner of a room.

Their selection of cards were pretty hilarious too – this one ticked me in particular!

Mum card

Have a look to see all the Shops at St Pancras International. Here is a shot of a selection!

Shops at St Pancras

What a fun day.  I will definitely be allowing extra time if I am lucky enough to be passing through again, or perhaps I might make a special trip there again. Who is with me? xx

Mother’s Day Gift Edit

How can January drag on forever and February be over before I could say ‘another celebration’. This month (Sunday 11th March) is Mothers Day. I actually think this is a ploy to cause more stress to husbands who have only just got over Valentine’s day and now they have to buy something on behalf of the kids (if the kids are under 10!)

Handpicked by Kate works directly with a collection of boutique, high quality and unique brands to bring you a range of exquisite homeware pieces and beautiful gifts. Kate’s desire is to provide an extra platform for these superb brands which have caught her eye along the way. (A girl after my own heart – this is my mission for TLM Edit!)

Below is a gorgeous selection of possibilities that Kate has compiled (and I added a few things that I really liked – there was so much choice on her website!)

So have a peruse, take your pick and press forward!

If they understandably aren’t so willing give them a break and buy something for your own mother or a special mother figure in your own life.

Thank you Kate – take it away…

14 Valentine’s Gift Ideas to Forward on To Your Other Half (or Buy Yourself)

Since starting The London Mummy (summer 2016), I have never written a Valentine’s post. Weird huh. No, it’s not that I am getting more romantic in my old age, it’s because I finally have time to breathe a bit more and can do some advance planning for once. So, what was the first event to schedule in – a Valentine’s Gift Guide!!!

By the way, if you are only doing a card (and yes, you do have to) Etsy have some really funny ones (and very cheeky) This one made me chuckle!

Date Nights

We don’t really exchange gifts on Valentine’s Day… actually what I mean is – I never buy Mr R a present (he has a January birthday, so with that and Christmas it can gets a bit OTT) and I have never really cared about being on the receiving end of Chocolates or Roses. However, with the media and internet and do many small businesses – there is no escaping the pretty and unusual gifts that are geared towards Valentine’s Day.

Small Business Gift Guide : Babies, Boys & Girls

Wow, this is a biggy!
