Cool Trousers

In the darker months, I live in black or dark grey jeans but they just don’t cut the mustard when the sun starts shining as they are too hot and well, just wintry. I usually just switch to lighter coloured jeans and hope that the pale colours will keep me cool, however this year things are going to change as I have discovered trousers.

Yes, ok, I know most of you are like ummmm, this is not something that came about at the beginning of the 21st Century but I never explored the trouser avenue as an adult, after being put off by an unflattering pair of Kookai trousers in the 90’s.

All that changed when I had an amble around a Spanish shopping centre in the Easter holidays.  (Think Zara, Mango, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti & Stradivarius all in one neat little row. Heaven.) I actually tried on some hareem trousers and I liked the result! Even the loose ones that are extremely on trend at the moment were surprisingly flattering. (Not blowing my own trumpet, I just want to encourage you to give them a go if you haven’t tried a pair on yet). The key is to make sure they go in at the ankle (either tailored or with elastic -I promise the latter won’t make you won’t look like Aladdin) and try and keep your top half relatively fitted otherwise you may look a bit billowy.

Whistles Trousers £95

This pair is a great introduction to loose, stylish trousers and with a slightly high and wide band around the waist, will keep everything tucked in.

Zara Linen Trousers £29.99

These linen ones are slightly more tailored.

FullSizeRender(276)

Sisley Trousers £55

These are the epitome of ‘school run’ mum. Uber cool and relaxed, especially with the white trainers.

FullSizeRender(269)

Boss Orange Zedina Trousers £130

Love the bright blue & white.

FullSizeRender(271)

Hush Relaxed Trousers £45

Hush always get it right and if you keep your top half relatively sober, these will look fab.

FullSizeRender(278)

Mavi Trousers £34

If you are already a dab hand in summer trousers, up your game and go for these lighter ones!

FullSizeRender(270)

Gaudi Trousers – Black Moonlight £95

I love these. Leopard print and an elongating stripe down the side. Sexyyyy.

FullSizeRender(275)

Gap Bi-Stretch Skinny Ankle Pants £44.95

If the above loose ones are not your bag but you want to to modernise your traditional cropped trousers, try a pattern like these Gap ones.

FullSizeRender(277)

Boden Richmond Trousers £59.95

These are also a twist on the traditional cropped trousers with the stripe down the size. Makes a pair of cropped chino trousers a little bit more funky and the wearer that little bit more on trend…

If you want to pair these trousers with some metallic trainers, have a look at my recent post with a round up of what’s out there.

The Perfect Spring Shoe

The sun is shining, school has commenced and then I put my unpedicured foot into my Silver Superga trainers and bingo – they finally packed up as two holes finally appeared at the top of the shoe.

(To be fair they have served me well as they were my default trainers for the majority of the year so it is no slight on Superga) but it is a wonderful excuse for a peruse as you can’t buy the same pair twice, can you! I actually wrote a post about my Superga purchase on exactly the same day last year – the first day of the summer term.  You can’t say I am not routine…

Superga Silvers £55

FullSizeRender(256)

If you are going down the pale or white ‘bottom half’ route here on in and rush around like a mum on the run, a pair of metallic trainers are practical and pretty.  The good news is there are a lot of gems around at the moment…

Esprit GWEN Trainers £55

Like the black heel – would look awesome with black skinnies.

FullSizeRender(250)

Maison Margiela – Replica Suede Trainers £470

Not strictly metallic but the ‘greige’ is a great neutral colour.

FullSizeRender(251)

Stella McCartney Glittered Trainers £340

Maybe not super practical but you could wear a bin bag with these and still look cool.

FullSizeRender(252)

Saint Laurent Metallic Leather Sneakers £395

These are actually men’s trainers but no man in my life would be allowed to (or want to!) wear these, which frees them up for moi!

FullSizeRender(245)

Hush Virgo Trainers £115

Hush always comes up trumps and these goldies are lush.

FullSizeRender(246)

Geox Shahira £100

These would take you from the school run to the pilates class no problemo.

FullSizeRender(254)

Adidas Copenhagen £26

I think these might be the ones I will go for as I can’t resist a star and at that price I could get a spare pair for that price…

FullSizeRender(257)

Adidas Superstar Sneakers £73

Old Skool is the best school and with the addition of the metallic stripes – they are pretty perfect!

FullSizeRender(258)

Penelope Chilvers Metallic Sneaker £259

If trainer boots are your thing, these are the ones.  (That description makes them sound ghastly, but can’t think of another way to describe them. Luckily a picture says a thousand words.)

FullSizeRender(253)

Golden Goose Deluxe Brand £270

No trainer blog post is complete without a nod to Golden Goose. The trainers of the moment. For good reason – these are mega… Stars and a classic shape. LOVE.

Statement Earrings

After my post on statement necklaces a fortnight ago, I felt compelled to give the humble earrings some time in the spotlight.

My current earring collection consists of a beautiful pair my husband gave me on our wedding day and a few random pairs still lurking from my university days, mostly consisting of a feather or beading. I don’t really have anything in between – so it was high time I went looking.  Earrings. Here my top picks.

7 Little Black Dresses

On my cyber hunt for a wedding outfit for March, I was a bit sidetracked by lots of lovely Little Black Dresses.  Like men, they appear when you aren’t looking for them. (Not that I have been wanting any to appear since I have been married but you know the old wives tale!)  If you are lucky enough to have a glamorous event in the next few months and your old LBD is a bit tired, below are a 7 dresses to inspire.

Kate Spade Open Backed Bow Dress £378

Pretty back. The low back makes the more traditional fabric of satin a bit more risque. Perfect for a family party.

FullSizeRender(167)

I have a thing for this seasons ‘off the shoulder’ trend. For good reason too – it’s so feminine and forgiving.

FullSizeRender(175)

Alice + Olivia Organza Mini Dress £945

Ok, with that price, it’s not a dress that you can just whack on your Paypal and hope that a few Ebay sales will make it go unnoticed, but with the gorgeous feather detail – it is definitely one to bookmark for a special event.

FullSizeRender(172)

Maje Crepe and Lace Dress £124.50

This dress has such a sexy back, that’s if you are able to go without a bra… Not for the faint hearted, but it might make a few people whoozy!

Striking Necklaces

Don’t you find even if you are given a necklace (or necklaces!) that you wouldn’t have chosen yourself, it still gets worn as it was so kind of that person to think and give it to you? (Shoes are entirely different btw – you need to get that right).

Whether it is a piece of string or a family heirloom (the former is the norm here), don’t save it up for a rainy day – wear it!

If you are somewhat lacking in a day to day necklace with a sentimental twist, take a look at these and either send this link to the person most likely to buy it for you, or leave your laptop open. And – you won’t have to pretend to like any of these.

Wishbone Pendant In Silver £110 My Wishbone

The 9k plated Spinner Wishbone Pendant hangs very nicely on the smart 9k plated 24 inch close trace chain. There is a unique My-Wishbone disc by the fastening. This pendant holds a secret message which comes to life when spun.

The Best Of The Rest : January Sales

Taking full advantage of Granny’s willingness to bump down the stairs for the 100th time / look up things on YouTube / play kitchen football (delete as appropriate), I had a few moments to hit the sales. From the drawing room obviously. Rain + countryside + children = snatching two minutes here and there to peruse the January sales.

Maybe I am late to the party but I have worked out that there is no point looking low end as there really is nothing left (unless you are in situ) however higher end is great if you know what you want.  Also the ‘normal’ sizes are still left high end as the only people who can afford the items at the original price are size 6’s. Controversial? Maybe.

Anyway, here is what I saw and liked!

Banana Republic Mongram Textrured Top.  Was £55 now £28.

I love the zip down the back, the gaping arms (to make your arms look skinny!) and the on trend colour for SS16 – Cream.

FullSizeRender(131)

Saint Laurent Leather Trousers. Was £415 now £290.

Ok, not an every day purchase but if you have been lusting after some to see you until you are 60, this classic flattering fit are all yours. (Unless you are a size 6 of course – they are sold out).

FullSizeRender(133)

Cos Raised Textured Knit Jumper. Was £55 now £28.

I earmarked this when I was in a Cos store but decided to wait until the sale. To my delight it was and I have just ordered it online.

FullSizeRender(122)

Pull & Bear Check Print Foulard. Was £17.99 now £12.99.

Not a massive saving but saving enough to justify a purchase?

FullSizeRender(132)

Isabel Marant Studded Suede Ankle Boots. Was £330 now £128.

I have a penchant for suede and studs combined so these really winked at me. Bargain!

FullSizeRender(127)

Savannah Miller Semi Sheer Top. Was £40 now £20.

If a dry January is for others and you have a few soirees, this is a pretty top to dress up or down. And it’s half price!

FullSizeRender(128)

Savannah Miller Blue Denim Shirt. Was £38 now £26.80.

This is a classic shirt both in fit and fabric that suits most people. (If you have put on a few pounds over Christmas, perfect disguise!)

FullSizeRender(129)

Anthropologie Argenta Longline Jacket. Was £120 now £58.

If it stops raining, this understated but chic coat jacket could take you from Winter to Spring. Love the leather trim and at less than half price it is a steal.

Embroidered Jackets

Since having children, I have developed a steadfast uniform of black jeans and a black vest in the summer and black jumper in the winter. Obviously I am slightly exaggerating, but when I am in a rush or feeling unimaginative this is my default uniform.  Not only is it slimming/suits my colouring/is stylish, it is a great base for jazzing up with more interesting items, namely an embroidered / embellished / jacquard / beaded jacket.  Here is what’s around at the moment.  Look closely at the prices too – these can be done on a cool budget.
