I have just been introduced to the Look Read Write Check method for spellings and it has really helped with the kids spelling as they are actually learning and thinking how to spell a word rather than parrot fashion and phonetically that can cause problems! This is the best method we have used so ask your school if they can introduce it!

Ideal for learning how to spell beyond cvc words!

The Coatigan

I promise I haven’t made it up! When this word ‘Coatigan’ first danced crossed my eyes I thought here we go, another marketing ploy to make us think we don’t have something and we need it. That was the cynic in me but the truth is, I secretly think it is a genius term and a much needed staple during these fuzzy months when a coat makes us feel too hot and a cardigan – well feels a bit passe.

When To Wear One

We all have those times when we need to nip for some milk in our pjs, the postman catches us unaware or we just don’t want to look so done – like the school run.

This is where the coatigan comes into its own.

To give you some inspiration and to put the look that I am going for in context, I have taken some images from Pinterest… and scoured House of Fraser who sell a multitude of Coatigans.

Not promising you will look like Rosie when you don a beige coatigan, but if you have warm coloured skin and golden hair – you can pull of beige and look fab with it.

Gussie & Lou : A Neontastic Rebrand

As a staunch fan of anything neon, I have always loved ‘Little Leggies’ as it was known up until a month ago. The founders, Gussy & Lou wanted to build on the success of their predominantly childrenswear business and expand further into womenswear that was becoming more and more successful, so a rebrand and name change was in order.

Following a busy christmas period last year and an increase in sales in our ladies collection we knew it was time to re think our brand slightly. We’ve loved our little leggies days but it was definitely time to think of something bigger and better and to create something that reflected our brand as being equal ladies and kidswear.

So not only did they want to rebrand –  a new name was needed.  Appropriately & obviously they chose  Gussy and Lou.

Coming up with a new name is tricky and we discussed loads of options but ultimately decided our own names were best suited for our brand. With Gussy and Lou having just launched the feedback we have recieved has been fantastic and we hope all our lovely customers and supporters like the new changes.

The new name works well and the shiny, easy to navigate website is fab too.

It is packed to the gunnels with lust worthy items for both your little ones and your self. So put on your Christmas shopping hat or if that makes you short of breath, invest in one of their top quality show stopping items.

Here are my top picks for the kids –

Neon Ruffle Playsuit £35

And also for the babes…

Now our turn..

Their signature piece (in my eyes) is the neon cuff and waistband trim cashmere jumper. In an array of stunning colour combinations, it is quite hard to decide which one to go for!

I am a very proud owner of the Oat colour design and absolutely love it!  (I take a medium if that helps you with sizing…)

This jumper is also in the shopping basket…

Stripe Cashmere Jumper £150

They have a stunning range of Blouses with green/pink and orange stars (or hearts) not them.

I know, insanely gorgeous aren’t they! I love this one – it is super soft.

Neon Green Star Blouse £50

And to really damage your balance this month – you can also get prepared for the dip in weather that is bound to come any time soon with their cashmere scarves.

Dark Grey & Neon Orange Cashmere Scarf £165

If you are lucky enough to off to sunnier chimes this half term, the beach cover ups are gorgeous and so reasonably priced.

Neon Star Beach Dress £45

You can also buy a mini me one!

It is rare to lust after so many items on one site but Gussy & Lou have nailed it with their gorgeous designs.

Despite the new addition of little Luna, this won’t prevent them from moving forward even further and I bet, continue growing rapidly. Well done girls on a triumph!

Gussy & Lou’s Favourites

Shop :Selfridges. It’s got everything a girl could want under 1 roof and we would love to stock Gussie and Lou there one day!”

Website : “Our own, of course!”

Restaurant :  “It’s got to be the Chelsea Ivy Garden where we treat ourselves to our annual, VERY long Christmas lunch, a date we both look forward to for months!”

Holiday destination : “Anywhere hot and sunny really! Corfu is a special place for us both as we have spent many happy holidays together here since University days.”

Parenting tip :

“Not sure we are that qualified to give too many tips considering Lou’s baby, Luna, is not even 2 weeks old! However what we both strongly believe is that every parent should embrace their little ones style, its amazing how many mums say how particular their kids are about what they want to wear, although this must be frustrating its also great, that from such a young age kids can tell what they want to wear. We believe parents should feel proud of this!”

An Alpine Adventure

Gone are the days of frumpy salopette’s and monstrous snow boots the size of your leg (that you had to wear on the plane as not enough space in the luggage – thanks folks!) Now there is choice, choice, choice everywhere from the supermarket to the high end department stores.  Personally if I am only alpine 1 week a year, I can’t justify ‘designer’ (not that I ever really do) but on the other hand I don’t want the seams to split when I am half way down the piste…

Good old Marks and Spencer have just brought out a ski range and it is really good! I am buying now before it sells out when the snow hits…

Leather Side Zip Snow Ankle Boots £65

I have only even seen this type of style sold for £400 plus so I am getting in there – quickly. Just not showing any of my family as they really won’t get it.

sd_01_t02_7271d_y4_x_ec_90

Round Neck Jumper £27.50

Bargain price and gorgeous colour – this won’t just be seen on the slopes.

sd_01_t38_7510_ou_x_ec_90

Colour Block Funnel Neck Jumper £27

Wow, this roll neck is nostalgic. I am sure my father used to wear one like this – which must mean it is back in fashion!

sd_01_t38_7697_b4_x_ec_90

Aha, look what I found – partially covered but you get the look that is inspiring me. Check out the goggles!!

img_3446

Ponte Skinny Leg Trousers £25

Ok, not strictly waterproof but they are the look I am going for and if you are a ninja and don’t fall over (!) you can risk it!  These are for apres ski with the boots above!

sd_01_t59_5243_y0_x_ec_90

Apres Ski T Shirt £12.50

M and S are rolling out fantastic price points – this T Shirt included.

sd_01_t41_1261_e4_x_ec_90

Colour Block Jacket £59

If you need a break from red, this vintage inspired jacket is pretty cool – as long as you are looking properly chic (red lips, polarised sunnies, fur head band) so it avoids the 80’s kid ski look (as above!)

sd_01_t49_3502a_xt_x_ec_90

Metallic Padded Jacket £65

If you aren’t sure you can pull off the vintage look, this metallic Stormwear jacket will add the necessary bling to your look. Just go easy on the accessories – this jacket does enough!

sd_01_t49_3505a_c9_x_ec_90

Quite fun with a bit of winter white?

2f19f7b95e407d9614c539ec161700ef

What’s your ski look? We are going for the first time this year in March and I am already thinking about it, so this will be the first post of many as I look together the kids kitted out (and the husband updated too).

Let me know if you have any recommendations! As long as it isn’t an orange all in one…

London vs Country

Yesterday I was listening to a (London) radio station. The interviewer was saying that she thinks everyone lies about liking living out of London. The interviewee exclaimed ‘they say that it’s great for the kids, breathing in the country air. I say how boring for them!’ and they both cackled with raucous laughter. I could almost visualise their black hats and broomsticks as they rolled around the studio mocking country folk.

It actually really pxxxxd me off. I thought how judgemental and small-minded. But then it was a London radio station so they are entitled to talk up their own book I suppose.

fb9d6af6ef4b2d98b7400434fac56924-travel-illustration-london-illustration

Perhaps they have never had that countryside itch that so many of my pals and I have discussed over the past few years in-between breast-feeding and prosecco and 5pm.

screen-shot-2016-06-22-at-06-00-51-780x387

Perhaps they are just staunch Londoners.

I have great respect for people who are unwavering.

I never was. I always knew we would move at some point.

But never thought it would be so soon….

When the kids are 9, 7 and 5. They have to all be at out of nappies, buggy’s and preferably at school.

We have done it 2 years earlier than planned.

In the summer holidays, there were a few changes of events in our circumstances and totally spontaneously and quickly even for those with ADD, we rented our house out, found 3 places at the local prep school and moved out to a house in Hampshire.

We KNEW we would move out one day, but not for a few more years. But life had other plans and we saw an exit point a few years earlier than planned and went with it.

Every door we pushed, opened and it just felt right.

Why didn’t you ‘announce’ it on The London Mummy?

Ummm, because who really cares? I thought it was a bit too much, to go ‘da naaaaaa’. Also, I wanted to get my own head around it first!

fullsizerender-74

So, what about The London Mummy?

If I was given a quid for every time someone asked me what I would do with The London Mummy, I would be able to buy a new Mac.

It is a very normal question to ask someone. Perhaps I was a bit defensive as it started to grate on me and I almost felt like a few wanted it to fail outside the confines of London. It reminded me of being told ‘I bet you want a girl’ when I was pregnant with my 3rd. (You can read about that here).

So here is my answer to that question…

I have never planned what the next chapter is for The London Mummy. From the off set when I set it up to shout about friends small businesses I never thought that people other than friends would read it. Then I added a few other categories. Then product reviews. Gift guides. Travel. Interiors. Then a directory and now my little shop.

None of this was planned. All of this is enough for meat the moment, but I have no idea what’s around the corner.

I really want to continue writing TLM and will just see where it takes me as I always have done. I was a London mum and am now a London mum bringing up her kids in the countryside. I have very intention of keeping my finger on the pulse of what’s going down in London town (!) so for the time being it will be predominantly London focused.

On an aside – I am loving doing my fashion posts and these seem to be the most popular style so that may increase…  Don’t you think I dress my daughter well? ha

img_7175-3

And only an hour from London, I can whizz up and back if I have a meeting or an event or want to catch up with some friends. Knowing it (London) will always be there is the most cathartic aspect about moving out. I don’t miss it as it as I know it will always be there.

Is it misleading? If people worry that I am misleading them, I am flattered they have taken the time to think about it!!!

So what’s it like living out of London?

Da daaaaaa. We have only been here a few weeks and it hasn’t been reality as we have been unpacking, settling, exploring etc but so far so good.

Apparently the winter is the magnitude of ‘what you have done’ sets in, but I don’t suffer from SAD so not too worried about it!

I was going to write disadvantages and advantages but it is not as cut and dry as that. Each to their own, whatever works for each family. Lots of people are worried about amenities and friends but I think that is small fry – you make friends and can find coffee pretty much anywhere in the country.

fullsizerender-73

It’s the commute. That’s what I hear most of the time. I have no experience of that yet but will let you know when I do!

So, here a few things.

I have to drive to get a coffee rather than walk, but I don’t get stuck in traffic like I used to so that’s a joy.

I don’t bump into friends out and about but that’s ok. The car park is rammed with lovely people at pick up and drop off anyway!

The light is something else – you can actually see the whole sky which I never could from my garden in London.

img_7826

It is very very quiet but I am sure that’s good for the soul. I definitely more peaceful in da country than I did in the big smoke. Must be the sheep that I see each morning!

img_8602

There is also something about being able to pick your own fruit!

fullsizerender-64

I don’t have neighbours if I were to scream in the middle of the night but I feel safer as not even the postman can find our house, so I doubt anyone else would!

We have to drive everywhere but we don’t have to leave the house at the crack of dawn we used to as the kids aren’t climbing up the walls.

I may not be being stimulated at every corner by unusual clothes and magnificent monuments but trust me, lots of the mums are up to London standards – if not more!

Life After London is a great website set up by Bee Aspinal for those that are investigating different areas.

I also recommend the following search agents –

Hart & Vine – Tonbridge/Sevenoaks

No Place Like Home – Home Counties

Property Potential – Surrey

Also, if you are renting out your property in London and want someone (excellent) to manage it – head to A & L Property Solutions.

Let me know if you have any others to recommend!

Whatever you do, don’t worry about your life being over when you leave London – it has only just begun (joke)

Oh but, one thing that is killing me that makes meant to drive up the M4 after drop EVERY DAY is the wifi or the lack of it. It comes and goes like an errant teenager and it is giving me a stress headache. This post has taken me all day to do on and off and means I have to go and tidy or cook – heaven forbid!

Of anyone has hints and tips for what we could do, please let me know – I wouldn’t want it slow TLM down!! x

Relaxed Glamour

How often are you just nipping to the pub and you have a dress dilemma. If you were going to a party, ball or theatre you would have thought about it, but pub/relaxed night out with friends – oh no  – you have loads of tops choose from so you don’t have to give a second thought. (that was sarcastic). So relaxed glamour…

Whereas teenagers abide by ‘don’t flash legs and chest at the same time’, we have moved on to follow a more sober rule of ‘don’t wear tight top and bottom.’  Tight top/joggers, loose kaftan/bare legs, slouchy cashmere jumper/leather leggings, vest/harem trousers and so on – you get it?

When I received an email from a couple of lovely ladies asking for some tips on what to wear on a night out – I proverbially jumped at the chance to put my thoughts on paper as I have spent a lot of time deliberating about it.

I hate to look too done. Naturally being a trainers girl, anything frilly, pointy or shiny makes men skin curl – although I am learning that 1 of these at a time can really work.

So let’s break them down and look at some ‘relaxed glamour looks’.

EASY TIGER

3f69e50c26d365695076309a8f6e72c6

Love this with blue jeans. Tuck it in  (aways on a slant for the most flattering shape) and this will give me a more pulled together look.  To avoid looking too school run add red lipstick…

Satin Flute Sleeve £35

Unbutton and pull up the sleeves so you aren’t too buttoned up. The satin gives this an evening look without trying too hard.

sd_01_t43_6499_y0_x_ec_90

Skinny Leg Jeans £29.50

Great jeans. Allows you to drink wine. And some more.

sd_01_t57_6004l_xb_x_ec_90

Leather Lace Up Trainers £49.50

I just wrote this post to find an excuse to put these in – aren’t they amazing!

sd_01_t02_0239b_yz_x_ec_90

All that action, you need a stay put lippy.

Black T Shirt £6

Stock pile. A staple.

sd_01_t41_1348_y0_x_ec_90

Pleated Skirt £35

Initially I went meh, but actually you should try it. Wear with flat boots and a little jacket and it looks great.  It might look yellow in this picture but it is gold in real life 🙂

sd_01_t59_4459_s0_x_ec_90

Leather Block Heel Biker Boot £75

Practical and I like the suede / leather mix.

sd_01_t02_7269_y0_x_ec_0

Faux Fur Gilet £59

Useful item.

sd_01_t49_1467_y0_x_ec_90

Leather Leggings £129

If you have tried and succeeded with faux, it’s time to make the grown up step and invest in real ones. I am still on step 1… I haven’t gone past my faux leather maternity leggings but I am working on it. #quietwordtomyself

sd_01_t59_4684_y0_x_ec_90

EVENING ATHLEISURE

This takes going on the school run in your work out gear to a whole new level. But it works. It’s cool. And who doesn’t love a tapered leg with stilettos – that’s got to be sexy!

13789069212ab8421b34d30b3c58b192

Stripe V neck Fluted T £29.50

This HAS to be fitted. You can’t do floaty top with joggers – you will look like a sack of potatoes. If you aren’t confident enough to carry off a bit of colour, go for a white v neck tee. FRESH!

sd_01_t41_5150t_b4_x_ec_90

Tapered Jersey Joggers £19.50

I LOVE THESE. Love jersey, love joggers, love tapered ankle, love black. That’s 4 in 1!

sd_01_t57_6631s_y0_x_ec_90

Stiletto Fold Over Ankle Boot £45

I am definitely buying these. I can’t walk in stilettos but with the extra support of these, I reckon I could nail those cobbled streets at 2am (who am I kidding!)

sd_01_t02_5899a_y0_x_ec_1

Anyway, the best nights always seem to be the ones where you have just gone for one and you are prob in your tracks with baby sick on your shoulder. If you have had had time to plan which seems de rigour with children, I hope this has helped!

And if all else fails, this bag has ‘relaxed glamour’ all over it.

sd_01_t01_6289q_y4_x_ec_90

Huge love y’all and please pop in and see me in Putney at St Mary’s Church on Friday 29th – doing a fair there! xx

My Autumn Staple

Ok, my father has never owned a pair of jeans but I would be hard pushed to find anyone born post 1950 to be in the same boat. They are totally my default Autumn Winter bottom half, mainly in black.  No one in my family understands why I *need another pair of black, however I am hoping you get it. Some you need to be stretchy for Little Gym, some high waisted for tighter tops, some cropped to flash the tanned ankle, some ripped when you are feeling edgy some some smart for supper with the in laws etc etc.

My preferred style at the moment is high waisted. I didn’t get it for a while, I thought they might look a bit mumsy. More fool me! They are amazing, they hold the muffin top in and there is no baring that ‘builder’ top bit when you bend over.

So I have searched high and low for some black jeans and have put together a little selection depending what you are looking for.  House of Fraser has the largest selection of brands so that’s where I am starting!

Mint Velvet – Black Triple Zip Skinny Jean £79

Fancy the biker look? These tough jeans hold you in place and also the zips are well placed to flatter.

i_5052188556775_50_20170201

If they are good enough for Rosie Huntington Whitely – they are sure good enough for me!

Paige – Margot High Rise Skinny Jean £200

High rise and keep their fit – skin tight! That’s what you are paying for – no saggy bum with these.

i_223887499_00_20150703

Wear with boots for effortless cool (if you can lookalike this high five!)

1f7393a06749cea2a6440987228c7724

Hudson – Mid Rise Super Skinny £165

Mid rise and super soft.  Perfect for trundling around after your toddler without the worry of tearing the knees.

Et Voila!

4e8386c96d9d7201b9361d81f4b9a68e

J Brand – Mi Rise Luxe Sateen Super Skinny £190

Want some more eveningy jeans? These coated ones will smarten you up.

i_201137975_00_20160708

Style with grey cashmere to soften the look.

1e3d812062bcfd7cc0439a61aee3f83a

White Stuff – Straight Leg £49.50

Straight legs are great if you don’t want to emulate a sausage. It brings balance to the top half and is actually perhaps more flattering than skinny but I do prefer skinny so they go easily into my boots. However, it you wear flats or trainers – these are cute.

i_5052782713208_00_20150225

Here is a good look to emulate if you are into flats.

High, low, biker or coated? I am doing them all this season as I do every season! xx

17 Pairs of Trainers No One Else Will Have

Quite a punchy call, but I have delved very deep into finding trainers that aren’t on the foot of every fifth mum at the school gate (including myself) and when it isn’t it a good time for a trainer post? I think they should be done every month! Here we go…

Veja – Holiday Blend Black & White 109 Euros

Not sure where the black and white comes from but hey, they are italian and who am I to argue.  Love the shock of pink and the general beige colour. Nothing dull about these trainers.

Ok, perhaps these are verging on clown shoes and / or I should have posted about these lush high-tops BEFORE Autumn hit, but they are limited edition and surely a good investment for Spring feet?

Ok, slightly disorienting price jump but hey, I’m not known for true consistency or order! There are lots of ‘one tab’ colours around but you can feel exceptionally smug knowing that yours were only £12!!! ha

Misguided – White Be a Embroidered Trainers £25

Embracing metallic and embroidered these sneakers tick all the AW17 boxes without a hefty price tag.  NB. Misguided is really good for embroidered sneakers – flames, leaves – you name it they have embroidered it! And, can I add that not many 30 plus woman know or shop at Misguided so you really be in the minority (unless they read this!)

This butterfly wing is the SW ‘thing’ in the same way that Christian Louboutin shoes have the red sole… So if you want to make a status symbol showing your wallet and your on the money style – these are worth saving for – and who doesn’t like a pale pink butterfly wing!

I have loved watching Rose Rankin rise up the ranks to become one the most prestigious and cool sneaker brands in the UK. Quality is her middle name so if you want different, excellent quality at a good price, RR is your gal.
