The Updated Ultimate Directory

I have just spent the last 5 hours updating the Directory – phew, that was a job that I had let slide but it feels great now to be up to date. The natural progression after a bit of a break was to include businesses and services not just in London but also in the South East, so that’s what I have done, updated every category including some new ones including GAP YEAR COURSES & PETS .

Hope you enjoy and get some helpful hints and don’t forget to email me with a recommendation! hello@thelondonummy.com

Hutton Bubear : Finding Your Family Home

Spring has sprung and it’s the time of year when people who know it’s time for a change, start their property search. Where do you begin? Especially if you don’t know the area,  the house might be right but what about location, commute, community to name a few major aspects on making a ‘good move’.  The competition for a great family home, in particularly outside London, is fierce and you need someone in the know and on the ground who can be your eyes and ears to properties that you wouldn’t otherwise hear about…

This is where Catherine and Alice can assist! Hutton Bubear are a bespoke property-buying agent providing unrivalled access to properties marketed both privately and publicly including many not available on the open market.

Hutton Bubear

They act solely on behalf of their buyers and tenants to find homes across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire and London.

They have excellent relationships with all the agents and are often first to hear about a new property on the market through word of mouth.

If any these counties are on your list – get in touch and I can guarantee they will make what is usually chore, very enjoyable!

We pride ourselves on clearly understanding our clients’ brief in order to find the perfect property for them.

brick-and-flint

What made you start your business?

We moved out of London to relocate in the country with small children in tow and even though we had a great deal of property experience, we realised that finding the perfect house is just the start. To us, there was an obvious gap in the market for a professional advisory service for families looking to make the move from town to country (or vice versa).

Together we decided to put our years of property search experience together and create the business to fill that gap. We both fully understand the challenges a big move brings and work tirelessly to make it as smooth as possible for our clients.

family home

Who is HB ideal for?

We’ve worked with lots of people in different situations, from families relocating from a big city to the country to those wanting to downsize. We’ve worked with investment buyers to those with no experience wanting to find their dream house.

kitchen

We understand our clients have busy lives so our aim is to provide a home search that’s second to none as well as taking out the stress of the buying process by dealing with agents, lawyers and other third parties on our clients’ behalf.

How do you juggle work with family?

It’s easier now that all of our children are at school but with two of us, we were able to help each other out when we first set up the business. We’re a real team and when we’re not on the road finding properties we work where we live. Obviously we try and maintain a healthy balance but because there are two of us, it means we really can be in two places at once if we need to be!

image1

What do you recommend thinking about when looking for a home?

  • Schools are obviously high on the list with most of our clients but the key is knowing the (realistic) travel times as well as fully understanding what each school can offer.
  • We look closely at the practicalities of commuting including train journeys and travel to stations.
  • We find out if there are any hidden catches that might be a future nuisance or financial burden along with checking a myriad of other things like road noise, planning applications, flight paths and so on.
  • Gut feel when you walk into a house counts for a lot but we make sure all the pros and cons have been fully investigated.

Alice’s Favourite’s

Restaurant : Numero Uno on Northcote Road. A throwback to my London years! Still love it.

Hotel : Baba Beach Club in Thailand thanks to an unforgettable family holiday a few years ago.

Holiday Destination : The North coast of Scotland – remote, but so beautiful.

Shop : Iris in London. Happily they have a brilliant online shop so I can still visit albeit virtually these days!

Website : www.re-foundobjects.com – gorgeous things for the home

Interior designer : Rita Konig

Parenting tip?

The ability to laugh, a proper Sunday roast and a good night’s sleep all help!

Give them a call today for an initial chat!

Family Transfers : Take The Hassle Out of Your Journey To & From The Airport

We have all had the dilemma when the taxi has arrived without the correct car seat you definitely ordered. Only one thing for it – to take your own, which is a massive inconvenience – who wants to lug that across continents? Family Transfers is a company that specialises in making your trip as hassle free as possible.

THE OUTWARD JOURNEY

We were lucky enough to review this service, starting in Hampshire at 4am at the beginning of the Easter Holidays. With an early flight booked and a way to drive to Stanstead it was brilliant to have a car to pick us up – with all the correct sized car seats for our three kids aged 8, 6 and 4.

Car Seats

A comfortable 8 seater arrived quietly in our drive ahead of schedule and Jorge our quiet and helpful driver leapt up to take the suitcases as soon as we appeared. We spaced the children out, seat belts on, radio off, perfect temperature and within half an hour all of us were asleep.

Packing

As they drive you straight to the drop off point there was no tassel of finding our designated parking space for the week.  Although I will hand it to Stanstead it is a well oiled machine and very organised, it is still quite far from the terminal to walk with kids – especially when it is so fresh first thing in the morning.

THE RETURN JOURNEY

On our return, Jorge had our flight details so met us off our slightly delayed flight.

Sign

He immediately took control and loaded the bags onto a trolley (and maybe one or two kids!)

Trolly

It was very helpful to have an extra pair of hands when dealing with tired hyper kids. My kids seem to go potty in an airport! Jorge pushed the trolley all the way to the car that gave us extra hands to guide the kids.

Stanstead

He delivered us home safely without a hiccup and I can honestly say it was such a joy having the transfer both ends sorted.  It is just another area to tick off your list when you are travelling that you don’t have to worry about.

Now for the next holiday….

NOT JUST AIRPORTS

They aren’t limited to airports – ports and train stations too or you could even hire a car and driver for the day and do a sight-seeing tour.

End of Tenancy Cleaning in A Hurry?

One of our major headaches when we rented out our house was the end of tenancy clean. I wish I had known about Nick and his Anyclean team, who I have handed over the reins to today. So if you need an end of tenancy clean – read on!

LogoSometimes, you need to leave town in a hurry. No, not because you’ve done something you shouldn’t – that’s another story – but because something’s changed in your life that requires a quick move. For example, you may have landed that great new job but so that you don’t spend most of your spare time commuting, it’s going to mean moving across to the other side of London – or to the other side of the country… or the world. Or you might finally have managed to put enough together to buy your own home so you want to move out of your rental accommodation into the new place as soon as you can. Or maybe your landlord’s selling up and the new owner of the place you’re renting wants you to move out (bad luck!).

Whatever the reason, there are times when speed is essential. However, an important part of moving out of is doing the clean-up.

anyclean-london-full-house-cleaning-service

If you’ve had to pay a deposit at the start of your tenancy (very common – a lot of landlords require this because there are some rotters out there renting homes, not like you) then you probably want it back again, especially if you have to move from one rented flat to another somewhere else. This means that you have to leave the house, whether furnished or unfurnished, in good condition. Even if you were lucky enough not to have to pay a deposit, it’s still just plain old good manners to clean up your mess before you leave simply because, well, how would you like to have to go into a place that’s been left in a mess?

As my mum always said, it’s nice to leave things better than you found them.

tenancy-house-deep-clean-anyclean-london

However, if you have to move out of your home, then you’ve probably already got enough on your to-do list, especially if you’ve got a family and/or pets in tow. You’ve got an entire household to pack up, transport to arrange, new schools to find and maybe even a farewell party or two to attend.

What Not to Bother About When You Move Out

Wait before you declutter.

OK, moving house is often touted as a great time to get rid of some of the junk that you’ve stuffed in the cupboards but the truth is that when you have to move in a hurry, you don’t have time to sort through all your stuff. The secret here is to get rid of obvious junk and rubbish thatyou encounter when you empty out the kitchen cupboards or whatever, but save the process of deciding whether you need something in your life or not to when you unpack at the other end.

Skip fancy cooking.

Yes, you may be a bit fan of Jamie Oliver’s 15-minute meals but these require a bit of organisation and preparation – and for you have all your kitchen equipment accessible, which might not be the case if you’ve already lobbed your blender and saucepans into the box labelled “Kitchen”. There are times when it seems that preparing and eating food just makes fresh mess to tidy up. This is one time when you’re allowed to eat most of your meals at the local Indian takeaway or to live on pizza.

Don’t pack everything!

Leave the kettle and your favourite mugs until the last moment so you can have a cuppa to restore your sanity while packing.

Places You Need to Check When Moving Out

It’s when you move out, especially in a hurry, that you suddenly realise how many odd nooks, crannies and corners there are in your home. Even if you call on a professional cleaning company to clean these odd spots, it’s still a wise idea to look inside them to see if you’ve left anything there.

Who knows – you might come across something you’d thought you’d lost.

Here’s a few places that you will probably need to check out, especially if you’re moving out from a furnished home:

· behind the sofa and behind any other large items of furniture like the fridge (this is usually the moment you discover how badly the carpets need to be cleaned)
· under the sofa cushions (not so many coins down there these days but other things still show up)
· weird storage spaces like under the house, in the roof or behind the garage
· built-in wardrobes
· in the hot water cupboard
· around the garden or outdoor spaces (there can be quite a few children’s toys in odd places like under bushes or in the flower beds)
· under the beds
· inside the oven, including in the warming drawer. Pull the warming drawer right out and look underneath it, as cake tins and pie dishes sometimes wriggle their way over the back and down
· inside the dishwasher, especially if the dishwasher is one of the fixtures. It can be all too easy to overlook a few spoons that fall down below the racks

Anyclean’s Professional Post Tenancy and Checkout Cleaning Service

Of course, if you’re really pressed for time and you want to make sure that you leave everything as you found it (if not better) so you can get your deposit back, your best bet is to call on somebody who has all the time in the world and who really knows how to get into those dark corners. This is where you can rely on end of tenancy cleaning services provided by Anyclean London. They’ve got teams of experienced professional cleaners who know the proper standards back to front, and working their way through standard checklists that meet these standards whether you are moving out of an unfurnished property or a furnished property. Even if you’re renting from a stingy tightwad Mr or Ms Fussy of the sort who’s reluctant to hand back the deposit because of little specks of fly crap on the window, evidence from the company (e.g. a receipt and a copy of the checklist) should be enough to back you up.

screen-shot-2019-03-26-at-12-30-33

All of Anyclean’s work is fully insured with an added 100% satisfaction guarantee as a peace of mind. This guarantee states that if you’re not perfectly happy with how well something has been cleaned, then all you have to do is to let the office know all about it and explain why you think things should have been done better.

Anyclean will duly send the team back to do what’s needed – at no extra cost to you.

Speaking of cost, the company uses a transparent fixed pricing scheme. This means that it doesn’t matter how long the job take – you’ll get the same fixed price that you were quoted when you made the booking. Avoiding giving their customers nasty surprises, Anyclean goes a long way in making everybody happy.

If you need more than what the end of tenancy cleaning teams will do, such as window cleaning or deep cleaning for carpets, then Anyclean can help you out with this as well. In fact, if you book in for carpet cleaning and for end of tenancy cleaning at the same time, you’ll get a discount on the carpet clean!

Anyclean operates in all parts of the Greater London Metropolitan Area (inside the M25 ring) and are more than happy to provide moving out cleaning services for flats, homes, apartments and shared homes both furnished and unfurnished. In fact, if you can live in it, they can clean it!

Ballpix Personalised Rugby & Footballs

The look of delight on my boys faces when they saw their surname planted on a professional sized Gilbert rugby ball during the six nations game last weekend was brilliant. The only problem was the squabbling over who got to play with it. With the Rugby World Cup this year, this would be top of most kids birthday list! The other bonus is it arrives in a box fully blown up!BallPix

Sanoflore  Organic Skincare for Problem Skin

I have been using the Rosa Angelica rage for dehydrated skin for a couple of weeks and it certainly has made my skin feel nourished and bouncy. I apply the serum straight after a shower before the moisturiser and it helps my skin absorb the moisturiser more effectively. If you have a skin concern and also want to be assured you are using a company that is doing all they can to protect and give back to the environment, Sanoflore is a well priced place to start.

40 at 40 Scratch and Reveal Poster

I gave this to my brother for his 40th and it was received with delight. The idea is that you have to see how many of the activities and challenges you have done and if you can only scratch the next square once you have completed the previous one.

Children’s Oil & Charcoal Portraits with Samuel Francis

Deciding on who to paint what will inevitably be passed down to the next generation and so forth, can be a tricky one. Should you go oil or pencil, traditional or contemporary, capture the kids at the same time or at the same age…. Having the children painted by a portrait artist has been on my ‘to do’ list but it had never made it to the top until recently, when I was introduced to Samuel Francis.

This is where the lovely Samuel Francis can help. Samuel has drawn and painted from childhood and started to specialize in portraiture from an early age. These years of experience show in his beautiful portraits, in which he uses charcoal and oil paint. His approach to portraiture is based on simple draughtsmanship that results in a timeless yet informal feeling to his portraits.

Samuel came up to our house in Hampshire to meet the kids and do a pencil sketch and take some photos to work on to complete the finished piece.

Samuel Pencil

One of the most profound quotes from the day was his reply to my 8yr old commenting on his pencil sketch, that it slightly looked like him

‘At the moment it is half you and half stranger and I am going to take it away and make it look 100% like you’

img_2009

And he certainly did, not only did he physically capture him, he really captivated their personalities. We agreed on the photo from which to work on, the colour palette to suit the room they would be hung in, and the size.

I dressed them traditionally in the same hue so they could be hung together. The colour of the frame brings them out beautifully and altogether.

img_3024

We are yet to paint the house so the cool colours of the paintings didn’t work on the ‘magnolia’ walls above the fireplace, so we had a reshuffle and for the time being thought they looked best in the TV room. This is not their final resting place, I wanted to hang them up to correspond with this post so you could see the whole process!

img_3055

Having two children himself, sam has a very natural way with the kids and the whole process was really fun.

img_1998

He is a true professional and his communication throughout was brilliant – he sent me the finished paintings on whatssapp so I could suggest any changes – not that I needed to!

We are so thrilled with the paintings and highly recommend Sam to paint your kids. I am thrilled to have got them all done at the same time as it captures them at a moment in time as siblings and we were able to get the proportions and colouring correct. I urge you to call Sam and get cracking, they won’t stay young and angelic forever.

img_2020

Sam has a few slots left before Christmas – so get them done as a Christmas present for your other half!
